It was clear it was purely touristic place, but it was in the heart of Montmartre artists and galleries area. The menu had some classic French items and we went for it. For a restaurant in such a touristy area I was surprised by the excellent service. The food was good but nothing out of this world. The onion soup and the escargot were solid as was the filet of beef and fries. The duck was tasty cooked to order but unfortunately a little dry. The standouts here were the location which came with a cozy second floor table for two by a window and the excellent service. It is indeed a touristy restaurant in a touristy part of Montmartre, but it's a nice spot to get a bite to eat and a beer. Our server was pleasant and helpful with our almost total inability to speak French. It's certainly a great place if you like to people watch. Certainly a touristy restaurant set in the artist's square of the Montmarte neighborhood, Chez Eugene offers a lot of the French fare that we all think is in French food culture but probably was abandoned long ago. Do I care? No, because what they served was delicious and I was there more for the quaint experience rather than fitting in with locals which I already have come to the realization that I will never fit in to French culture. I had a Croque Monsieur which was rich in flavor, drowning in cheese, and filling! It was delightful! There was a guy there (not sure of his role at the restaurant) who was happy to pair our foods with good wines and they completely did fit our dinners. My wife had the andouille sausage special and she raved about taste of the sausage as I raved about my open faced sandwich. Our server wasn't very friendly or helpful and it was funny seeing him take a smoke break 20 feet from the restaurant, but whatever. Coming here as a tourist and having that experience is certainly what the moment was about and Chez Eugene provided that for us. I wouldn't return on a subsequent visit to Paris just because there is so much good food to explore in this city! read more

Three of us ordered complete meals--two steaks with fries and one boeuf bourguignon), one ordered an omelet and the other lasagne. We also ordered two bowls of gratine (French onion soup). The salad was hearty--hard-boiled eggs, shredded carrots, etc. with lettuce and tangy dressing (maybe had horseradish). The roquefort creme appetizers were delicious but the steaks were tough. We had chocolate mousse and sorbets for dinner. They were delicious. The waiters were okay. We had to ask for water refills and were charged over seven euros for tap water (?!). read more

I'm going to have to mark this down as rather ordinary, particularly since we have some rude waiters. Okay, somebody might suggest that this is France, and in particular Paris, so we should expect the waiters to be rude, but to be honest I don't believe that that is the case. Rather, it is just this particular place that I didn't really life, and found that the waiter here was somewhat worse than many of the others I encountered. This is a shame because it is in such a nice location, and the coffee is half decent as well. However, it certainly isn't a place that I will be spending all that much mor etime at, or returning to in a hurry. read more

A cute little restaurant located in the Artist's Square of Montmartre with Sacre Coeur just a few winding streets uphill. Discover artists painting caricatures to portraits to scenes of Parisian life in the main square, then stop by Chez Eugene for a meal or espresso afterwards. I ordered the 27.50 dinner special: Foie gras (fat duck liver): Foie gras is abundant in Paris, especially during Christmastime when it's considered part of the traditional holiday meal. Deliciously rich and buttery, I could only eat half of my foie gras disk. The Parisians around me though, cleaned their plates. Confit de canard aux pommes sautees (preserved duck with sauteed potatoes): Absolutely phenomenal. This was one of my favorite dishes while in Paris! The meat was bursting with flavor (considering the duck is cooked in its own fat, this was not a surprise), and complemented by thinly sliced sauteed potatoes which perfectly soaked up the incredibly savory sauce. This time, I cleaned my plate. Profiteroles au Chocolat: Cream puffs filled with cold vanilla ice cream juxtaposed with a warm rich chocolate sauce... a wonderful traditional French dessert to end the meal! Extra brownie points, or should I say extra profiteroles au chocolat points, for a live musician and waiters dressed in 19th century Parisian attire who service with a smile! read more

Here's the deal: we were starving, a little exhausted from trekking around Paris all day, the weather was perfection and I was determined to eat moules-frites, damn it! Chez Eugune is situated right in Place du Tertre, and we were psyched to get a table outside and a front row view of all the artists. Sure, there weren't too many locals dining but I found the people around us to be just our caliber. Travelers who appreciate culture but sometimes want the convenience of a waiter who speaks "un peu d'anglais". We chatted with the waiter a bit in a mix of French and English. He was certainly French, but I think he saw that while yes, we were Americain! we also appreciated French culture and we were really damn hungry. Moules-frites pour moi and steak-frites for the husband. Yum! Nothing to complain about. We both licked our plates clean. All in all, Chez Eugene isn't marriage-proposal-worthy but jeez Louise, it's a pretty nice spot to grab a bite to eat and catch some epic people watching on a sunny afternoon. read more

from our trip in 2007... we planned on having a glass of wine here. we ended up having 2 carafes! this place is located right in the Artists' Square in Montmarte. just down the street from Sacre Couer. it's an awesome spot for people watching. the staff at this place was amazing. we had practiced on the plane ride on some practical French. such as "may we order a bottle of wine". the waiters found it both funny and welcoming. hence the 2 carafes. they kept bringing out some baguettes too and teaching us more practical french. the dudes were awesome. we highly recommend this spot for the service alone. read more

I am basing this review solely on the waiter. I brought my son here to show him Montemartre. We sat outside to be able to see the artists at work. We were in a wonderful mood until "he" arrived. On the ticket it said Filipe. I ordered wine to start in French. He looked really annoyed. Granted my French is not perfect but I live here now and most people enjoy when I try to speak French. Then we ordered the lamb and charcuterie. I was smiling and friendly, but for some reason he detested me. I knew it was just me because he was over friendly to our neighbors and even people walking in the street. It was almost comical. Every exchange was painful. My son noticed it too and couldn't figure it out. I thought maybe I reminded him of someone he hated. Anyway it was difficult to enjoy the food or the experience with this dark cloud around us. The food was okay, not anything extraordinary and the other servers were very nice. The prices are high but the surroundings are perfect. I paid 79.50 euros for a miserable experience. So I hope the owner of this establishment sees this. I don't like giving bad reviews. I was tempted to give only one star, but I am not a mean person. read more

Avoid this resturant. First, they will convince you to eat at the resturant. It's a tourist trap! The food is bland and does not have much taste to it. I ordered a lemon sugar crepe and couldn't taste anything except eggy crepe. My husband got a cheese, ham, and mushroom crepe that had no taste to it either. We had to add salt and pepper to bring some taste to the savory crepe. They will give you an expensive bottled water if you don't ask for tap water as well. The waiter was nice to us at least. You are better off going down more and eatting a a better cafe or resturang. read more

Chez Eugene is C'est Magnifique et tres bonne. Located in the middle of the Montmartre where legendary artist are born and go to display their talents. The best part of the restaurant is that it's named after me..haha I wish. Such a beautiful place to be during sunsets and evenings. The base of Sacre Coeur is filled with two things: artists and restaurants. In the main square, you'll see a giant mass of tables, but they are actually separate "restaurants" - every establishment that abuts the square has a section that belongs to them. We were looking for good crepes and settled in Chez Eugene. Our waiter came over and was very dismissive about us being American and speaking English. Considering this never happened anywhere else in Paris, and this is a giant tourist trap area, and the waiters were all dressed in comically stereotypical costumes, this made no sense. For what it's worth, the waiter looked like an aneorexic, French Elliot Stabler. I got the Mixte Crepe, which was ham, cheese and a fried egg. It tasted like a crepe with all of those things on it. Nothing special about the cheese, ham, or the dish. It appeared that one or two places in this area weren't quite as touristy, and if I came back I would definitely look for those. read more

Came upon this café in Place du Tertre. I didn't have any breakfast yet, so I ordered the Crepes w/ Mushroom & Cheese. It wasn't the best crepe I've had, but it was still delicious (even if the mushrooms came from a can, however I secretly love canned mushrooms). I also ordered a café au lait and enjoyed my moment of peace while watching the artists get ready for the day. If you are looking to get a sketch done of you, this is the perfect spot. Fun little spot! We stopped for a glass of wine outdoors after our visit to the Sacre Coeur! Waiters were so great! Chez Eugene is a funny place. The entertainment provided by jokes relating to this food has been a great source of fun during our Paris trip, and for that reason alone I feel happy giving Chez Eugene one star for being so comical. Whoever you are Eugene, I tip my hat to you for having a hilarious sham of a restaurant. After arriving to Montmartre very late (circa 10.30pm) we realised quickly that most restaurants in the area had finished serving. Being very hungry we resigned ourselves to the fact we would probably have to eat in one of the tourist traps located in the main square. We actually looked forward to what we thought would be a funny holiday type meal, not expecting good food at all, but certainly not prepared for the hilarity that was to come. We picked Eugene's because of its incredibly cheap menu. It seemed simple and straightforward. For circa €16 we would get 3 courses. A seemingly very good deal considering the flashy tourist trap it was. You may think the food you are ordering is so simple it couldn't go too wrong. But it will. I won't go into too much detail, but though €16 may seem cheap the food you get is definitely not worth it. Also they will make their money back on the €8 for a medium soft drink. Our €50 gave us little edibility but a lot of hilarity. We had far nicer meals in Paris for similar prices with a bit of research. Scout around and pay a little more to find something better. Or if you arrived late like us, just go for a crepe across the road. (We actually opted for this after our "meal") On the small plus side the service was super super fast. So fast in fact I reckon there is just a pile of meals waiting in the kitchen. Also our waiter was very nice, almost appearing apologetic as we handed back our plates. Chez Eugene will be remembered fondly. It became a very pleasant running joke of our holiday, made us laugh both throughout the meal and for days after... But if you're not much into comedy/want food, I would avoid. read more

This place is located in a little square near Sacre Couer, along with several other restaurants who are definitely pandering to the panting tourists that have trekked it up the hilly streets. The nice part is that you can sit outside-- or inside near a window-- and watch some of the street artists working their craft. But definitely don't go out of your way for the food-- there are other places in the Montmartre area that are much better. Service was good and very quick. read more
