And here I am trying to stay awake in the fog towing a big trailer without a hot cup of coffee, and my gas tank heading towards fumes... On Thanksgiving, no less! Found me a Speedway, and pulled in. Gasoline prices are hysterically high, and at $4.99 a gallon, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Too tired to do either. I ambled inside and found a small but clean and well-stocked gas station store. The restroom entrance is sort of behind the counter, but the nice young lady behind there told me to help myself. Clean restrooms that didn't make me contemplate projectile vomit. Bonus. I filled a 20 oz. Paper cup with hot "100% Colombian" coffee. Looked burned but passed the sip test, especially after a liberal amount of French Vanilla creamer. The gal behind the counter was really nice-- we laughed a bit about how her grandma was doing all the cooking this year, and I smiled and nodded, knowing I still had a lot of kitchen duties ahead of me when we got home from camping. Easy on and off the freeway, and while the Starbucks at the same exit wasn't open yet, I can't say I wanted to try navigating the lot with my trailer anyway. The tofu now is just bland with no salt. Most of the food in that case is like that. Vegetarian food doesn't have to be bland. You can use salt. Wish they would make some changes to the hot bar also. Make people want and enjoy vegetarian food not the opposite. Vegetarian food has come a long way the co op could do much better in that regard.

We continue to buy the Humboldt Bay Coffee ($18 for a 2.5 pound bag) and a 2 pound bag of Black Oak Coffee Roasters for the same price. Both are excellent In addition they have a good selection of Mendocino Spirits and I highly recommend their Low Gap Bourbon. AS with many things we do we have some rules that help us get out of Costco with our pocketbooks and dignity intact: 1) NEVER EVER go in hungry. That 25 gallons of dill pickle chips is much easier to resist on a full stomach.... true story there. 2) Avoid the free samples. People seem to lose their minds with this stuff. They abandon carts with crying babies, block isles, etc all to get that tiny portion of hummus. I have been shoved aside by someone desperate to get a free piece of cheese. Honestly I have seen more dignity from actual starving people in a disaster zone but I digress. 3) Avoid the weekends like the plague. 4) See #1 5) Go often. Costco uses alot of psychology and the fear of missing out is one of them. Odd items you must have pop up then go never to return. I CAN'T MISS OUT AGGGGGGG 6) Know your codes: At costco any price ending in 0.97 means it has been marked down. Any price that is not a 0.99 or .97 such as say 0.49 means it has a manufacturers discount. and price with an * on it means its done and will not be reordered so stock up. If it ends in a .00 or a 0.88 a manager has reduced the price at that location to clear it out. 7) When in an unfamiliar city head to the Costco. They always stock local items you can't find at yours (like two pounds of single origin Kona coffee for 30.00 at the Kilaua / Kona store etc.) and have cheap gas.
