The main play area is padded and it's a really great park for toddlers, babies and maybe the 10 and under crowd. Older kids might be a little bored since the play equipment was pretty basic, but again, great for young kids. There are benches, some swings and a small slide. We were looking for another good walk and a new place to explore. This won the vote. We started out just walking to the covered foot bridge beneath the trestle bridge and the Nation Ford marker. We all walked a little further before my grandparents turned back. My mom and I kept going. We were trying to find the Carhartt mansion ruins. We made it to the right location but did not actually see the ruins. They were up a steep embankment which we were not willing to risk traversing. That was a bummer but the trail was otherwise enjoyable. It is paved and easy to walk. Mostly flat with a few hilly sections. But it stayed cool with the forest enveloping the area and the river cooling the air. There were lots of squirrels and even a snake right off the side of the walking path. This was a worthwhile stop with an opportunity to get next to nature without really even leaving the city. Worlds apart yet wholly together.

Ms. Sandifer was born on the property and lived most of her life in nearby York, SC. She was a school teacher prior to her retirement and lived to be 96 years of age before her death in February 1994. In her will, Ms. Sandifer requested that this property be known as the James Ross Wildlife Reservation. A parking area is available and a sign dedicating the tract is present. The James Ross Wildlife Reservation consists of 305 acres and lies approximately 2 miles southwest of the town of York in York County, SC. It is located south of Ross Branch and is intersected by State Road 35 (Old Pinckney Road). Pine timber stands comprise about 150 acres and are primarily natural shortleaf, some Virginia pine and two small areas of loblolly pine. A significant number of desirable mast-producing hardwood species such as red oak, white oak, hickory, beech and dogwood occur on the tract and account for approximately 145 acres. Several small wildlife openings are present. This is about as wildlife as it gets. It's not only a nature preserve but it's also far from cities and development. There is a fire management road through it and I walked along it briefly to see what was what. There was no noise from cars planes or people. The site itself had a history that wasn't quite what I expected; after its days as a working plantation, it was rented to sharecroppers for many years before the area was bought by the National Forest Service and a large number of trees were planted with the intent to create a new forest (a success, by the looks of things), and the site of this mansion was later made into a park. Wandering around the site was free; a guided tour of the mansion itself did cost some money. The site was the home of a governor shortly before the Civil War, so the focus is on Civil War history. I had the run of the place given the frigid weather, and I found the historical context interesting, though there seemed to be a lot of gaps in recorded history and a lot of speculation in the responses I got. Nonetheless, you'd still get an interesting and nuanced picture even with the uncertainty. There were some small trails, but I didn't quite make it to the river. Without the tour, there wasn't really enough to be worth driving an hour or more to get here (and I was puzzled that some people apparently left without seeing the mansion). It wasn't the best SC park I've been to, but they've all been interesting.
