Cute, cute, cute! That's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the Cherry Hut, the darling restaurant of Beulah. It is certainly the most festive restaurant I've seen up north so far and the breakfast buffet was delicious to boot. We never expected to find this gem on our way to Traverse City, but I'm glad we did. My mom and I stayed in Beulah the first night on our trip and the next morning we needed a good meal before heading to the dunes. So we scanned the brochures for possible restaurants and this one stood out. I had my doubts about it and, to be honest, wasn't expecting the food to be great. I've been to restaurants in small towns up north and more often than not, the food just wasn't anything memorable. So after the stunning scenic drive from the hotel, we pulled up to the Cherry Hut, and my first reaction was conflicted; it was adorable like a dollhouse on the outside, but I worried that we were in for a kitschy tourist trap and a mediocre meal. We were greeted by a very friendly elderly woman in a red dress with cherry earrings and were quickly seated. The atmosphere was so bubbly and bright. Every inch of this restaurant was ornamented with cherries: cherry curtains, cherry wallpaper, cherry red booths and outfits! Even the bathroom had cherry perfume, hand soap, and lotion. The food surprised me in the best way! It tasted fresh, warm, and, most importantly, it was delicious. I had hash browns, scrambled eggs, a cherry muffin, and a cup of fruit from the breakfast buffet. I can easily say that was one of the best breakfasts I had had in a while. After we ate, we looked around in their little gift area at the many interesting cherry products and we brought some goodies for the drive and cherry tea. Yet another great summer at Crystal Lake and the Cherry Hut! I know of no place that has changed so little since my mom and dad took me and my brother there as kids in 1966! What a wonderful restaurant! And you can't find more wonderful waitresses anywhere! The Crystal Lake region would not be the same without it! Don't miss it. Apparently we are not the right color to eat at Cherry hut. Went in with a group that included 6 adults and 7 children, all middle-eastern. We had another group that had ordered carry out because their young son had fallen a sleep in the car. The manager had informed us that there are plenty of restaurants that could accommodate large parties like ours as they had several large parties waiting for tables. We saw no large parties present in the waiting area and plenty of available seating. We suggested to the manager that we could split up the party to accommodate them, yet he still couldn't get us a table and continued to mention other establishments that would better suit our needs. We then decided to just order carry out as the kids wanted to eat and shower after a long day at the beach. The manager denied us carry out stating that our separate families carry out was the last of the day. Fortunately they called it in before he saw their skin color. It's sad to see racism like this still exists in a country and state we were all born and raised in. read more

They have a cute miniature shop inside the restaurant for gifts/ souvenirs and when the actual restaurant closes for season (october) they have a shop down the road that they open up for gifts/ souvenirs. read more

Lovely, simple buffet, excellent cinnamon buns, fast drink service, SO MANY CHERRY things. As you would expect. My party of 7 was seated quickly & our waitress got our drinks order right away and invited us to go to the buffet whenever we were ready. Fruit, 2 kinds of scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, buns, cherry muffins, sausages, bacon, & waffles (premade or make your own). We also got the checks promptly. My husbands family had been coming here each year when on vacation. He's been vacationing here with his family since he was a toddler. Unfortunately, we have stopped dining here. The past three times we dined here, the service was very slow ( during non rushed hours ), the food was not very good - not horrible, just something we do not want to stop and pay for. I believe the pies are very good, and it's a cute place to visit to say you've been there; however, I don't recommend it as a must. The last time we went, it wasn't very crowded, and we weren't waited on because the wait staffed seemed unorganized. We even had the greeter check to see if we were waited on, we said not yet, and still was forgotten about. That was our decision to stop frequenting the Cherry Hut. I hate giving bad reviews. Perhaps in the future, it will return to the way it was before the last couple of years. **I should note that we (kindly) let the gentlemen at the front counter know that we weren't waited on. He offered us free (I believe it was cherry preserve/jam), but we didn't need any. He was very polite about it, apologized for the inconvenience, and so were we. I'm fortunate enough to be working with Deering who has family ties to the gorgeous Cherry Hut. His family shipped some goodies out to him during this deployment we're on and he brought some jam to breakfast (best meal ever). My goodness I was blown away this morning! I'm big on homemade jam and the Black Raspberry was like nothing I've ever tasted. This slice of history has basic food but earns 4 stars for its historic and surreal appeal. The clean, shiny staff are straight out of a Timothy Burton film with their positively perfect demeanor. The red and white decor features cherries and more cherries, everywhere you look the cherries seem to multiply. Don't go in an altered state if you value your sanity. read more

You feel like you've done the time warp thing and been dropped straight into the 1950s when you land in the Cherry Hut. The cheery, cherry red-and-white color scheme, which includes the dowdy server uniforms and the huge Cherry Jerry logo that adorns menus and grins somewhat manically on the sign out front, hasn't changed in my memory (and I suspect for many years prior to my first visit here). This place is open seasonally, for the warmer months, so most of the staff are college and high school students, and the menu proudly lists "the girls" and "the boys" by name and school affiliation that work there each season. "The girls" tend to be college age and work as servers, "the boys" tend to be high school age and work in the kitchen...just sayin' The food tends to be pretty old school and the type of thing that your old aunties might have cooked for their families, so it's not really a place I would go for a romantic dinner or cutting-edge cuisine. But for breakfast, lunch, or dessert, it's a decent choice. I like their cherry sundaes, so we stopped by there recently for dessert. Tim, a real chocolate lover, had the cherry fudge brownie and liked that as well. Best of all, the bill for two desserts came in at under $10. We also tried the breakfast buffet this last trip. Decent basic food (scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, hash browns, fresh fruit, corned beef hash-although the hash was of the mushy canned variety) on a buffet that was fresh, hot, and replenished in a timely manner. Quick and filling fuel before taking off on a day of hiking, taking photos, and having fun. There's a small store at the front of the restaurant with Cherry Hut jams, sundae sauce, and other cherry-related products-a good place to pick up a couple of small gifts or things to take home to enjoy later. So, it's not for the adventurous eater, but the place has been around since the early 1920s, so it's one of those kitschy and nostalgic places that you always stop by to at least pick up a sundae or a jar of jam when you visit the area. read more

My parents first came here on their honeymoon 65 years ago. They brought me here as a small child in the 60s; we brought our daughter here in the 90s. We've seen a lot of changes to the building and the menu, but not to the quality of the food or the staff. Favorite items include the turkey vegetable soup, cherry burger, egg salad sandwich, and cherry yogurt. Whatever's on special is always good, too. Turkey dinner is a treat. I find that, on vacation, I get to the point where I yearn for vegetables besides french fries and lettuce, and here you can get some. I appreciate that there are alternatives to a sandwich. I know they sell a lot of salads but I figure salad is something I can get anywhere so I usually get the cherry burger (if I'm hungry) or egg salad (if I'm not, very). Used to be a great place for a very good home style meal. Went there today and ordered fish and fries. Fries came and they were not peeled. Seems to be a common fad around here. I wish restaurants would research the consequences and dangers of serving unpeeled fries. Being an ex potato farmer, I know what those dangers are. Turned my stomach, so I sent the meal back and went elsewhere to eat. So sad to lose this as a favorite place to eat. read more

Classic summer stop near Crystal Lake, I just wish it were closer to our cottage in Leelanau, but still worth the drive. The food is classic American fare in hearty portions, and the cherry pie is great. My favorite thing is being able to stock up on their delicious jams and jellies that get me through the Minnesota winters. I can't find any cherry jam anywhere that rivals it. This isn't a place you come for the best food. This is tradition. My husband's family has been coming here forever and ever so every year we go. The first year I was disappointed with the cafeteria quality food. Now, after 8 years coming here, I enjoy it. The cherry pie is delicious, if you like cherry pie, since that is the only pie they have. I get the complete dinner -soup, dinner salad, cinnamon roll, dinner roll, entree, desert and drink. The complete dinner is the way to go here. Service is always super friendly and tonight with our group of twenty she suggested and happily gave us 5 separate checks. I have never posted a review for any business before, but had to for this. Don't try eating here if you are ethnic. Walked in at 6:20pm on a Sunday evening with 8 adults and our children. Were "kindly" told we could not be accommodated, that there were 4 large groups ahead of us. Many tables empty, no large groups in sight. Despite offering to sit at multiple tables, we were instead given the name of 3 nearby restaurants we could go to. Asked them if we could instead place orders for carry-out. We were told the kitchen was no longer taking carry out orders. Wow. Not used to being discriminated against. We were all born in Michigan, all educated with degrees at college level or higher. We were traveling in Michigan from Orlando and while driving thru Beulah we made a point to stop and have lunch at the Cherry Hut. Susan and her family growing up always stopped for lunch on there way to Traverse City for a week at the cabin on East Bay. Susan had the Chicken Salad and it was more than she could eat and I had the perch along with a vegetable mix that was the best I have ever eaten. The vegetables were both soft and had great flavor. For dessert of course I had the Cherry Pie and it was the BOMB. Having mostly restaurant chains to choose from in Orlando it is a pleasure for us to travel and discover these type of hidden gems. The essence of the midwest. Like, Japanese tourists should drive up here just to observe authentic Americans being American. We have gone here once a year, on our annual trek to the Great Forest in the North, and we eat as many cherry things as we can in one sitting. Check out the Gwen Frostic paper table mats and cherry-shaped paper menus. For diner food, I would actually say it's a cut above. I mean cherry vinaigrette: seriously. And feta cheese in the cherry salad (edgy, but it works). The cherry aid is too sweet for my taste; mix with iced tea for a cherry Palmer and you're good to go. Carnivores: go for the cherry burger. I mean, you only live once. Vegans: the veggie sandwich on pumpernickel or rye (other breads have honey). Vegetarians: many choices. Bonus points: dress in red. read more

A diner with friendly service? One that uses local products? In Northern Michigan? Yes, it exists! This place is great. Walk in, get treated correctly. The food is outstanding. The pie is amazing. Try it! My only complaint is the parking. Not enough spots. Most of the clientele probably wouldn't pass a driving test (over 60), so watch out! If you're bringing your nice car park it downtown or elsewhere and walk. Trust me! It's a scary parking lot. read more

Service wasn't bad but the food sucked. Got the turkey pie and it was flavorless. The biscuits they put on top are about the width of a quarter and dry as heck cause they microwaved them. We also got the burger which was thin and dry, no juices at all and then they charge you extra to add standard stuff like a friggin tomato!!! Seriously!? If i want cheese and tomato i have to pay more....FOR ONE SLICE OF TOMATO?!?! I think this is one of those "local" places that's been around for awhile cause there isn't competition.
