A gem reflecting a bygone era. Visitors to the Beulah and Benzie area are cheating themselves if they stop anywhere else for dinner. The owners are often about--fact is I've never been there when one of the family wasn't--and they know they've a legacy to maintain. It shows. The Hut has a cozy interior, and is cheery even on dull, gray, rainy days. There's plenty of seating, so if you're waiting at the door (rare) there's a reason. It isn't just tourists who come here. Service is top notch. It's been a tradition there to list the names of the staff on their menus, and in a tourist town that takes some confidence in your staff. It also speaks volumes about how the staff are treated. I've never gotten bad service here...never. The staff are friendly, warm, and smile a ton! The food is good, and there's plenty of it. The cooks understand medium rare is neither bloody nor gray in the center! That's a big plus with me. The cinnamon rolls are not to be missed. There's at least one cherry in every meal, even if just as a garnish. I've always left full and satisfied. Dessert is the best...especially if you're planning on the cherry pie. My wife and I stopped in for dinner and as usual, it was great! I had the hot turkey sandwich which was so generously piled with turkey that I ate half and had the rest for lunch the next day. My wife being a vegetarian, enjoyed a veggie sandwich. She reported it to be tasty and well prepared. The cherry pie specialty was as good as ever, and the owner said they make between 300-400 a day. Service was provided by high school girls and they were cute and peppy. Prices were moderate, portions very adequate, the place is clean and inviting and no wonder they are always busy. After a long day of hiking and exploring, the Cherry Hut was a great way to fill our tummies. The menu is large hosting a wealth of items to choose from. The decor is over the top cherry reflecting their name. And the diner has a great little theme that takes you back in time. You can't expect much when you're in the middle of Michigan, driving to Traverse City. Went home one weekend to take a trip up north, to my favorite part of Michigan- Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes. It was cherry festival time, so heh, why not, my dad was rather intrigued in this "Cherry Hut" place, so we took a stop. The sign...is a cherry with a smiley face on it. Hmmm. The waitstaff inside...are dressed in old school dresses (think... old schoolhouse wives), with cherry print all over them. Heh. Different...Very different. Nonetheless, you get your homemade cherry pies and your overall cherry food. We got the cherry chicken salad sandwich on a croissant...and it was delicious. They must use the plumpest dried cherries I have ever tasted, but it tasted pretty amazing in croissant. Mmmmm. Yes, you're in the middle of nowhere, but it's definitely worth the stop on your way up north. Check it out. And don't forget to get a good slice of pie while you're at it. :) read more

Overall - Cherry Hut is a small, classic diner with old world charm, homemade food, a friendly staff and a committed seasonal following. The food isn't the best you've ever eaten, but it's good and it's homemade. The desserts are wonderful. Do be prepared to wait a bit on the most popular of summer days though. Also, check out the baked goods for a special baked to go item! They have creative gifts as well. Location - This little place is conveniently positioned in the Frankfort area amongst any number of lakes, but also in the middle of nowhere. Without it, you might otherwise be stuck with few dining options. Interior - The restaurant's old world charm (red, vinyl booths, cherries dotting the linens, curtains, etc.) gives it a quaint feeling, like stepping back in time. However, the restaurant also feels in need of a good cleaning and a few replacement items here and there. Staff - The service at Cherry Hut is exceptional. Although not always able to provide the fastest service on crowded days, servers are very friendly, well-informed and eager to please. FOOD! - The food at Cherry Hut is moderately, not cheaply, priced. They're known for complete meals - side items, bread, and all included. Some meals show a bit of a German influence, but all are definitely of a "stick to your rib" nature. You should definitely not go home hungry. Definitely try the baked goods! My grandparents live near here and in all my summer vacations I can't believe that we hadn't stopped here before. It walked in and felt like I had walked into Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. It's a sweet small town diner. I got the Cherry Chicken Salad Sandwich, my girls got turkey dinners (just like Thanksgiving). Everyone else's food was great too. But the best was dessert. Cherry pie for me and my husband and cherry sundaes for the kids. So fun and yummy! We had a party of 6 right a dinner time during the week of the 4th of July, and it did take a while for a table, but the manager/owner was so apologetic and we were on vacation so we were totally relaxed. :) read more

This is SO the place to eat in Beulah! How can anyone resist the happy-face cherry logoed street sign you can spot from a mile away? Inside is pure cherry-themed American diner, complete with waitresses in dresses and frilly aprons straight out of "Alice." Menus are shaped like cherries too. Overall, the food is just OK. The turkey-broth based vegetable soup was decent - strong broth flavor, but the veggies were overcooked and bland. Both my companion and I got meal salads. They were serviceable, but pretty boring, and quite expensive when you consider the smallish size and miserly allotment of toppings. And the extra $2 I paid for turkey on my salad was not worth it, plus the little bit of turkey they did sprinkle on was dry and stringy. Each salad came with a cherry muffin, which was excellent, but so reeked of butter I felt guilt with every bite. On the other hand, the cherry pie was very, very, very good, as you would expect in a place called Cherry Hut. Even better heated and a la mode. The restaurant also has a gift shop area, and it is definitely worth getting a few jars of their best selling cherry jam -look for the ones with the tart cherries as the first ingredient. But unlike the reviewer who took some jars home in his carry-on, my sister got her jam confiscated at security for being a "gel-like substance." So if you are getting on a plane, pack your jam in your checked luggage. read more

This place has the best cherry pie ever! I saw an article in Gourmet magazine a few years ago about some small cherry store in the middle of nowhere Michigan (ok West of nowhere). There are not many places in Michigan that get a several page article in a food magazine so I stop in for a slice. I was blown away. Just the perfect tartness, perfect flakyness and softness in the crust. Just amazing. I travel to Michigans U.P. often and take the detour to the Cherry Hut when I can. I brought some to work and a coworker like it so much he has a standing 2 pie order anytime I go. We wanted to love this place, we really dd. After seeing it on Under the Radar - we decided to take our daughter here for her 7th birthday. We arrived yesterday for lunch at Noon, and there was no one to greet us. Eventually, the gentleman behind the register told us to sit where ever we'd like. The four of us sat in a booth with two place settings and two menus. After 5 minutes (where there may have been four other families at this time) we had a waitress come to the table. She took our drink order and didn't bother to get additional place settings. When she came back, she took our order and wanted the paper menus and still didn't realize half of us didn't have silverware. No worries - I got it myself. Our food eventually arrived. It was Gordon Food Service fare, which was confirmed on our way out as the staff was tossing GFS boxes out. The cherry burger was the best meal of the four, and the BBQ beef was just average. We ordered four cherry pies for dessert, and that was quite good. The pie comes out warm on cute little plates. No new forks were brought with it. At no time were we asked for a refill on any of our drinks as well, which was a bummer as it was over 80 Degrees yesterday. Not sure we will make a special, one-hour trip from the cottage again to come here. If we're on the way to Frankfort and we're hungry - we may stop and leave our expectations in the car. read more

There was a bit of a wait, but it was totally worth it. Best cherry pie EVER! Don't expect a huge portion; it's just enough for you to be craving more. I had to mention this first because it was the main event, but the rest of the food is very good, too! Get their cherry-ade, it's yummy, doesn't need a lemon slice. I got the 1/3 burger cooked medium, the perfect size and tasted delicious. I added cherry salsa and onions. Next time I would have left out the onions, not necessary, took away from the salsa, which was very good. And lastly, cherry pie a la mode. You'll have a pie-gasm, pie lovers. Incredible! The service was incredibly sugary sweet and they all have to wear cheesy red dresses. Poor girls. The Hut is only open in the summer, so get a couple pies and freeze em! read more

This place was super yummy! We came for pie and were happily surprised by the delicious food! We ordered a Turkey and Dressing Complete Dinner (best option with dessert and drink included!) and the Cherry Mixed Green Salad. First of all- let me rave about the dressing(stuffing). I am one who does not care for stuffing. At Thanksgiving I pass most times and would rather eat my carbs in mashed potatoes if you know what I mean! I LOVED this dressing! It was so delicious! I want to order a whole plate of just dressing!!!! The mashed potatoes were also delicious. Second order everything cherry- come on you're at the cherry hut!! My salad came with a cherry muffin- yummy. They have bakers here and they know what they are doing. And man, that cherry vinaigrette- super delicious. We ended the meal with cherry pie ala mode and again- I'm not a fan of cherry pie but this was so good! We ordered a whole pie to go so we could enjoy more. My family makes sure to visit the Cherry Hut EVERY TIME they're in the area. The atmosphere, the menus, the servers, the gift shop, and the food are all unique and well worth the visit. I will be honest, the food isn't anything that's going to blow you over, but then again, you're paying for the atmosphere and good times. I do like the Cherry Chicken Salad though, and it's almost A MUST to order a cherry-related desert! A must-visit for all northern MI tourists. Their gift shop is great too! read more

Heard good things about the cherry hut so we checked it out today. Staff was very nice and friendly, food not so good. My husbands fish looked like it came from the frozen food section at grocery store, potatoes and carrots looked and tasted they they were frozen also. The clam chowder must have come from a can. I always get the same thing: an egg salad sandwich on wheat toast (bread and butter pickles come on the side), a diabetes-inducing cherry ade, and a slice of cherry pie (warmed, but not ala mode). Thank you Yelp as we were driving back from Mackinaw to Chicago I checked the Yelp app looking for lunch and found this place. They just don't make them like this any more, its like going back in time. This is one of the great road side attraction places that we used to be blessed with many many years ago. The food is not going to wow you that not the point..its the building and the cherry place mat souvenir menus that are over the top kitchy cool. This is one of those places that you see on the PBS specials that should be an American Icon its been there since 1922...amazing. The Food is all american kind of diner fair nothing we had dissapointed I love the Cherry Chicken salad with potato chips. I would give the cherry pie 3 stars and the food 1 star. It kinda reminded me of an old folks home minus the antiseptic smell. The cherry pie is good, but it's not "the best I've ever had". It is fun to have an old-school restaurant that people dream fondly of and write even more sentimentally about, but if you didn't grow up with it, I guess I just don't see the appeal. I got a better cherry pie at the Elberta Farmer's Market on Thursdays (in the summer) just down the road. The food: tough as nails steak, stale club sandwich, lukewarm mashed potatoes - really, barely edible. On the other hand, they did have the most adorable cherry-stuff that was handmade. The Good: cherry pie and vegetable soup are great. Really, everything cherry is great. Cool cherry theme with nice cherry souvenirs, jams, etc. shop inside. The Bad: don't get the prime rib. I ordered mine on a Saturday afternoon right before 5pm and it was cold. As if they took it out of the fridge and placed it on top of the sear pan for 30 seconds. The fat in and around the meat was still congealed and hard as a rock. I guess it's partially my fault for ordering prime rib here, but it was on the menu so fair game to review... Stopped in here for a slice of cherry pie. The pie and coffee were delicious. Service was excellent. Waitresses still wear "old-fashioned" red and white striped dresses. Plenty of cherry jelly and other items to purchase, including full pies. The artwork cracks me up. There are at least 3 Cherry Jerry logos. As a family, we have collectively been visiting the Cherry Hut for nearly 50 years. Their pies have crisscrossed the country in our sketchy homemade packaging (before they recently started officially shipping them), landing slightly worse for the wear, but no less delicious, on the doorsteps of our friends and relatives. The pie is of course a knockout. The cherryade was also particularly good on our last visit--not as cloyingly sweet as usual. And my favorite meal? The turkey plate!! Like a little slice of Thanksgiving in June, with delicious home roasted turkey, stuffing, and veggies, for around $10. Our trip to the Frankfort area wouldn't have been complete without visiting the Cherry Hut. My boyfriend and his family have vacationed in Frankfort for years...generations....and the Cherry Hut was always a must. I was excited to finally experience this place for myself! Just looking at the building transports you to another era....and of course the interior does as well. We had such a wonderful waitress that day - she was extremely polite to and because the place wasn't busy, we chatted with her for a bit. The food was good - your typical diner fare but the cherry pie... OH THE CHERRY PIE.. that was the real reason for the trip. Before traveling to Michigan in 2014, I never really cared for cherries/cherry flavored things..but I'm a convert and this pie sealed the deal. We have yet to order a pie / have it shipped to Indy but I'm thinking this might be the year to do it! read more

Get the cherry burger. It's juicy, tasty, and, 65 percent less fat than their normal burger and you can barely detect the cherries. Nice atmosphere and Gwen Frostic placemat (pictured) is a nice Northern Michigan touch. Good value. Not easy to keep a restaurant open for ninety-three years. read more

I enjoyed the cherry salad on mixed greens, complete with mandarin oranges, walnuts, feta cheese, some carrots and I topped it with the cherry vinaigrette dressing. Server was great about bringing extra dressing upon request. Another in my party had the Reuben and said it was quite good. Absolute topper was the warm cherry pie.
