We stepped back in time when walking in here. The decor and outfits reminded me of something from the 1980s. Everything was clean and in order. I am guessing they run a tight ship. There are even signs on the table to turn down the volume or use headphones, which I actually appreciated. They sell a wide selection of cherry products amd souvenirs. The cherry pie is perfect, with the ideal tart/sweet balance. I'd say skip the ice cream since you can get ice cream anywhere. The service is almost psychic in its consistent ability to anticipate customer needs. For instance, most of the crowd is probably in laid-back vacation mode, but a couple of times I've come here in frazzled "must get to whitefish restaurant three hours away" condition and had super-fast service. Some folks are taking points off for food. While the pie is phenomenal, the food may be categorized as diner cuisine but there's nothing wrong with it. The baked chicken was very good some years ago; I haven't tried it recently. Since at least 2003 I've been trying to get the lake trout, which is only available Fridays after 5, and finally was able to get it on my recent trip. To borrow an obscure Charles Grodin "Heartbreak Kid" reference, the trout is honest. True fish enthusiasts will like it but it might not be ideal for those who go for shallot-lime-mango-almond reduction glitziness or fish-and-chips heaviness. Ah yes. This is another place we usually HAVE to stop when we go up Michigan way. When you first walk in, there's a cute little shop area where they have CHERRY ALL THE THINGS. Things that are edible. Things that are wearable. Things that are mail-able. You want it cherry? They've got it. Everything from candies and jams to jewelry and flip flops to post cards and key chains. Another thing I think that really sets Cherry Hut apart is the uniforms. Their servers still where "old timey" striped outfits that I think are adorable. It really makes you feel like you're somewhere special. If you don't like cherries, no problem. A lot of the food is without cherries and you can't taste the cherries in other foods. All of the food there looks incredible. The Chicken Strip Plate is a meal consisting of chicken strips, a choice of potato, and a roll. The Hot Sandwich Mashed Potatoes and Gravy was a plate with a turkey sandwich that was drowned in gravy, with mashed potatoes on the side. The Cherry Hut embodies every part of small town charm that a restaurant can embody. My team of runners stopped here after a grueling 2 days of running in Ragnar Road Race. We were starving. I don't think this restaurant was prepared for all the hungry runners that was streaming through its doors, but service was still very pleasant. Cherry Hut takes the cherry theme very seriously. The decor and the clothing are all cherry themed. Even the bathroom had Cherry blossom soap and lotions...how cute. My team and I were dying for hamburgers. The hamburgers were freshly ground meat from local beef farmers that were next door if not closer. The hamburger was not overpowering with flavor and moisture, but it was still very good. We as a table opted for fries or onion rings which were both very good...Hot and crispy. The Cherry lemonade is a must if you come here...sooo good and so was the cherry chip frozen yogurt. As a final homage to the cherry town and restaurant, I took a cherry pie home. I must say...it was a hit. The kids and husband loved it...even without ice cream. This is an American style dinner. It is family friendly and it serves good comfort food. And as the name implies it is all about cherries from the wall paper to the menus. The service is friendly and fast. To drink I got water which had a very strong iron taste. So if you are not into the iron taste, I suggest getting something else to drink. As an entree I got the hot sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes. This was a turkey sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy on top and of course it came with a cherry on the side. The gravy was bland for my taste so I ended up putting some salt and pepper. The sandwich was a good portion. And for desert I got the cherry pie with ice cream which I am already planning to get again when in the area. This cherry pie is totally worth it. I can't recommend it enough. read more

Whenever I think of Michigan, I think of The Cherry Hut. This classic restaurant has been serving locals and visitors since 1922. They've been around for so long for 2 main reasons: their awesome service & great quality food. The servers are always friendly and upbeat! With their red & white uniforms and positive attitudes, I have always enjoyed interacting with the waiters. The food is amazing as well. Even though the menu is pretty basic (sandwiches, salads, soups, and burgers), it is all delicious and great quality. I have gotten the Turkey Salad Plate a couple of times and really love it! It comes with a sweet cherry salsa and I can never get enough! The best part: All of the dishes are good portion sizes. You always leave feeling perfectly stuffed. The Cherry Hut is about nostalgia. We always stopped there when we went up north as kids. We didn't always eat there, but we did always stop at the little shop to pick up cherry products. On this trip, we decided to have lunch there. I got the cherry chicken salad. It was a HUGE mound of chicken salad, laced with those wonderful dried cherries. It was served with a cherry muffin (which I brought home and still haven't eaten) and a nice fruit salad. Another person in our party got a turkey pot pie. It had a nice gravy and good-sized pieces of turkey. It needed a little bit of salt, but overall, it was good. My nephew ordered the cherry burger and said it had a nice consistency and was tasty, although, as the server said, the cherries are used more as a filler than for flavor, as you can't really taste them. And, my sister enjoyed her BLT. We ordered a piece of apple pie and a piece of cherry pie to share. The apple pie had a LOT of cinnamon in it & was very good. The cherry pie was good, too -- it being their signature pie. But we liked it even better when we mixed the two pies -- that was really good. After our meal, we went to the little shop area and bought a ridiculous amount of jams, jellies, cookies and dried cherries -- as well as some souvenir glasses. This was the weekend before they close, so they were out of a few things, but we still managed to spend way too much on their goodies. I'm definitely glad that we made it part of our trip. read more

This place is so adorable! I had a huge smile on my face the whole time we were there. I tried the cherry chicken salad and it was delicious, as was the cherry muffin it was served with. Everyone else's plate looked really good too and there were many other things on the menu I want to try. The service was good, and the atmosphere is so charming! First thing's first....the cherry ade and the cherry pie ala mode was A+++ . We went at 6:30 on a Thursday. Had a party of 11, 6 adults, 5 children. Crayons and paper for the kids to doodle on. to be quite honest, this place is a gem! after reading some of the reviews, I was unsure whether the ratings were given because of nostaligia for some families or because the restaurant truly deserved them. All I have to say is: the prices are very affordable, the food is pretty good, the service is amazing, and the portions are huge! I got the complete dinner for $20.50 and it left me stuffed. The Cherry Hut is old school all the way! It has been around forever and a stop every time we head up to Crystal Lake. If you know me, you know I adore cherries in any way, shape and form so a pie is a must for me. Or two. Or more. Anyway, the pie is the end all for cherry pies. We also pick up apple butter - enough for a long, long time, to take home and store for the 'lean' times of winter. I can't speak for the food other than the sweets, but for some old time ambiance and delicious sweets, this is a place you should stop when in the area! Wish I had some pie right now. read more

Frankly, I don't get it. My wife and family has been coming to northern Michigan since she was a kid, and they all go crazy for this place. If you have driven by before, scared to stop because of the weird logo, be reassured. The logo comes from a cartoonish "face" shape they used to cut into the pie crusts. Cherry-ade drink was super strong. No free refills, but only the biggest sweet-tooth could drink a refill anyways. There is a reason that Cherry Hut has been around for decades. The food is great. They have kept pretty much the same food on the menu since they opened. Cherry Hut also informs you where the ingredients of the food come from. Everything is made made with fresh ingredients. I had the chicken pot pie last time I was there. It was small,but filling. The pie is full of flavor and just delicious and the cherry pastry is also yummy. The waitresses are friendly and efficient and dress in the traditional outfits that have been worn for years. Plus, you have all sort of merchandise you can purchase. This includes Cherry Hut t-shirts and even Cherry Hut teddy bears. I always buy the dish towels. I highly recommend Cherry Hut . read more

2 1/2 stars. The good: Unique theme/color scheme and mascot "Cherry Jerry". It's nostalgic and reminiscent of classic diners. Very bright decor and the wait staff have neat uniforms and they seem reasonably friendly. They accommodated our seating requests even after I goofed with the # in our party. The restaurant is very inviting and seems "fun" - in large part because of the graphics and the Cherry Jerry character. Also good: the cherry-ade - it's $3.25 for 1 glass and you are given one complementary refill -- for that price - but not more. It is quite tasty though. Also good - my son liked the chicken tenders (strips). The not-so-good: The service. They close at 8:30pm - our party of 6 got seated at 7:30 or so.. so perhaps they were tired. Anyway - we had a few misses in the service area. One burger was ordered with cheese and nothing else. That burger was served without cheese but with lettuce and tomato. The patron that ordered it started eating it without the cheese and pointed it out to the server. Server returns about 10 minutes later with a cold slice of cheese on a small plate and hands it to the diner - who had just finished the burger, sans cheese. So....thanks? A side order of fries was ordered with all the entrees but wasn't served with any of them. Had to point this out to the server who said "they're coming" which I think was code for "I forgot to tell the kitchen you wanted fries - so I'll go tell them when I go back there if I remember". They came out about 10 min after the entrees. If you order the "cherry burger" - heads up: there is nothing at all discernibly "cherry" about it at all (except the name). It tasted ok for a regular hamburger - but if you expect any cherry flavor (as I did), you might be disappointed. At least put some cherries on it or some cherry BBQ sauce or cheery dip or something. They said the meat is somehow infused with ground cherries -- but I detected no evidence of this whatsoever. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt on this and asked the server if maybe they mistakenly gave me the regular beef burger. The server said no mistake because the serve claims to have actually seen the cook put the real "cherry" patty on the grill. Sure. I sent it back. Later owner/manger offered to make a regular one - but I passed. I appreciated the offer though. My wife also ordered the cherry burger -- she said it tasted ok ("nothing special") but had "zero cherry flavor". A note about how they change for garnishes on the burgers: You get to pick one item from a list - anything else is 50¢ extra each. The list includes tomato bacon, cheese, onion - the word "lettuce" is not on the list but they do have it apparently. Why not just charge a bit more for the burger instead of nickeling/diming for lettuce or onion? Weird. They rightly adjusted my check to remove the charge for my distinctly non-cherry "cherry" burger. For a party of 6 our (non adjusted) bill was approximately $75. Overall the win here is the Cherry Jerry gimmick/theme - more so than the food/service. The family friendly cartoon character, the bright red graphics and decor and uniforms and the classic/retro diner-style atmosphere are interesting and memorable. I live in California and constantly rave like a lunatic (insert joke here about all people in California being lunatics ;)) that this is best cherry pie ANYWHERE. This pie is so good that I had relatives emailing and calling me when I visited recently demanding I return with pie. Stopped in for lunch and was great as always. Wife and I had the hot turkey sandwiches which have real turkey and not processed slices. Daughter had the lunch turkey plate with mashed potatoes, gravy, corn and chunk turkey and her favorite hot roll. We split a hot fudge Sunday which is made with hand scooped ice cream and not soft serve. Great meal as always. Super clean inside and fast service. My wife and I took our whole family of six along with aunts and uncles and grandparents, to the Cherry Hut and had some awesome food. Some of the ones in our party were rude and out of control and the management handled the situation quite well given the ridiculous behavior of some of our party. I apologized to the manager and the server. My family will be back but I doubt the others from our party will be. And that is probably for the best. My daughter recommends the chicken finger dinner... she said it's the best she has ever had. And she would know. My wife and I had the Philly Cheese Steak Sammichs. They were awesome!!! read more
