I bought a car for cash 2 months ago from this dealer. I was told the car was in perfect running shape, nothing wrong with it. Last week the car wouldn't start. After having it towed it seems the timing belt went. It then damaged the rest of the engine to where it couldn't be fixed. The mechanic said that the timing belt had months of wear on it, the dealer had to know. I called to inquire about getting approved for a loan. I submitted my application and when called to check the status of my app and the first thing Steve said to me was "no bank is going to approve someone who's only been employed for a month' ... I've been extremely stressed with car shopping and his comment was very discouraging, especially for our first real interaction. It honestly made me feel like he already lacked effort to help and so I just said it's fine and proceeded to disconnect the call when I heard him give a little tickled laugh as he yelled to a colleague in the background "people dont even want to share information" .... yeah, of course not when you start the conversation with such a negative comment. Fraud out of 214.00 for motor vehicle services and and notary and messenger services, I live in Philadelphia pa, they told me they would send to pa, I received a signed nj title in there name in the mail 30 days later. A proper review of this used auto dealer must separate the experience with the vehicles from the experience with the salesman. The vehicles offered at this small used auto dealership range in quality, but the prices are reasonable and I feel that they did reflect the quality of the vehicle you were purchasing. The vehicle I purchased in Feb 2009, a 2004 Volvo S80 for $9,999, was well below competitors' asking prices in the Philadelphia metro (tri-state) area. The car, though, was in need of basic maintenance... the oil was overdue for a change, the brake pads barely passed inspection, the spark plugs were toast, the leather interior desperately needed proper cleaning and conditioning, the tires were OK but show signs of uneven wear, and all wiper blades (2 windshield and 2 headlamp) all were dry-rotted. However, doing those repairs and replacements myself cost just a few hundred dollars, and in the end I believe that I got a great car at a great price. The owner/salesman for CHAS is Steven Pressman. This guy is a character, and not in an endearing way. You need to be on top of your auto buying game if you are going to deal with him. His asking price for the Volvo S80 that I purchased was immovable, so the only room for negotiation was on the trade-in value of my 1999 Nissan Maxima, a car that I had babied for the past 4 years. One noticeable characteristic about Steven is that he is not able to process multiple streams of complex data simultaneously. He might have years of background in auto sales, but that experience hasn't made him quick in his assessments or calculations. For example, I provided to him a complete (I mean detailed and complete) service history for my Maxima, from the first day it was in its original owner's hands until the day I delivered it to CHAS, and he didn't know what to do with the information. I gave him a tour and demo of the remote start and keyless entry system, and he wasn't paying attention. The payment process with Pressman and CHAS was excruciating. His business model is stuck in 1988. He wouldn't accept payment unless it was by a cashier's check that he then would deposit and wait for it to clear. My credit union and I refused, and we said that we'd wire the money right into his account. He was lost throughout the entire wire transfer process. When he received by fax a receipt for the wire transfer, a typed, signed and dated letter from the loan officer of the CU stating that the transfer was complete, and a phone call from the loan officer of the CU, he sat there repeatedly clicking refresh on his Web browser while staring at his TD Bank account summary. The CU loan officer tried to explain to him that he has the money and the documentation to prove that he should receive the money regardless and that bank Web sites are often delayed in displaying current balances, and Steven wasn't having it. He only begrudgingly allowed me to leave with the car we had just paid for, and even then he refused to complete the title transfer documentation. I said that I'd wait some extra time for him to properly complete the documentation, and he gave me a story about how he and his wife complete the title documents in batches, so he'd "overnight" the documents to me... which arrived by standard post to my house about 8 days later. Caveat emptor. If you're going to deal with Pressman and CHAS, you need to know what you're doing. If you aren't confident in inspecting a vehicle yourself, bring a companion with those skills, or make arrangements for independent evaluation. If you aren't paying cash, you either need to play Pressman's game, or you need to be ready to take full control of the process. Steven is a nice enough guy, he doesn't come off as being too jerky, but he is also not as refined as I would have expected from a guy who has been in the business as long as he says he has. The car I came away with was a good deal, but that "deal" was only possible with my own skills, assumption of minor risk, and willingness to bring the car's consumable items up to Volvo-quality expectations for a few hundred dollars. Take this as you will: While I'm willing to assume the frustration and buy my own vehicle from CHAS and Pressman, I would not encourage my wife to buy from him, and I would recommend him to only my most car-savvy and finance-savvy friends. read more
