The famous fishing pier at Cherry Grove Beach
    Elena T.

Cherry Grove Beach is part of North Myrtle Beach located where the Intracoastal water way meets the Atlantic Ocean. It's breathtaking. Winter is my favorite time to visit. It's peaceful and hardly a soul around. You're completely detached from every day worries, free to think and breathe. What's fun to do at Cherry Grove Beach: * Pier fishing from the famous 985 foot Cherry Grove Pier, home to record catches. Bait, tackle, rods rentals are available at the pier shop. All day pass is $1.50 (free if you are lodged at the Prince Resort). * Bicycling and stroller walking. * Kayaking * Jogging, walking, shells collecting, and my favorite, photographing seagulls Here is a detailed list with more family friendly activities you can do near Cherry Grove Beach, many, many photos, where to stay (Prince Resort) and where you can eat. http://shoutaboutcarolina.com/index.php/2009/02/cherry-grove-north-myrtle-beach-kids-free-things-to-do/

First time back to Myrtle beach in 20 year or so. We had a great time! Beautiful beach and met some lovely people.

One of the cleanest beaches I've been to, it's great for beach combing. The kid in you would rejoice if you love shells :) Important: There are no lifeguards on duty so please don't stay late after sunset. Although it can get extremely chilly and windy during cold seasons, it is a must-visit for people of all ages, especially families with kids. Free parking is limited and sometimes impossible to find during peak seasons so recommend going there early.

Clearly they make a lot of money on fines. For example, I got a parking ticket when I was parked in a public parking spot at the south end of the island. If there was signage, it was not clear. But fine, I guess I missed the signage and so be it. But now take a look at their parking violation. $25 - IF I pay it same day. I didn't even notice the violation on my window until the next day. So now I just paid $50. After 3 days, they Jack it up to $75. After one week it quadruples to $100. This is just shameful and disgraceful and I hope the town of Sunset NC lives to regret being so petty. Everything on and around the island is already pricey so I suppose the Sheriff and parking folks feel quite entitled. Get your act together Sunset and stop ripping people off you power and money hungry fascists.

Located in a neighborhood with mobile homes, short houses and not too many tall condos, this beach access has a small parking area and a building with restrooms. On the beach, it is firm and hard packed. Quite a lot of shells and pretty rocks to keep the kids occupied, the shallow water extends a good bit into the surf. There were quite a few free places to park, and the beaches were free(still are). We ended coming down every yeat, and purchased a home in Barefoot Resorts because they had a beach cabana with free parking. The free parking is a rare find these days, but I we were able to buy a parking sticker. We purchased a new home in Little River (just up the street} in 2023. We were not able to buy a parking permit for this year because of the very limited supply available to out-of-towners. No breaks or allowances for war veterans, no free parking anywhere we can find--let alone finding one with a restroom. We visited the beach a couple times a week because I had developed a skin disorder from agent orange, and sitting in that warm salty water was a free treatment. I will be able to get free parking if my condition gets worse and go on total disability, but probably won't be in good enough shape by then to enjoy the beach, and I am already in my seventies. I just wanted to put this information out there--because I know I'm not the only one who lives in the area with the same issue. I would have to go out of the country to find a beach I ever enjoyed more than the Beach from Myrtle Beach up to Cherry Grove. Is there anyplace in the area with free parking for war veterans?

Not too built up along the beach/island but not too far away from the things that you may need as well. Well maintained beaches/accesses/public areas. I've enjoyed my vacations here so far. The Deets: Well, to be honest, I'd really go with 4.5 stars here but hey, what's half a star between Yelpers, right? Plus, we can't use half stars in reviews...so.... For the last couple of summers we've had the opportunity to go to Holden Beach instead of/in addition to our annual beach destination of Ocean Isle Beach. With Holden Beach just east (feels like north) of OIB, we are still in fairly familiar territory for our NC beach vacations and we can hop over there to enjoy old favorites if we want. What I notice most about Holden Beach is it is very quiet and not a lot of traffic, especially on the eastern side of the island we have stayed at. Nice open beach area (running east-west and facing south) and not too built up on the island area itself makes for a good get-away-from-it-all spot. If you'd like lots of restaurants, shopping, water slide fun, etc. or just needs those groceries then just cross the bridge back over and it's right after crossing the bridge to the mainland, so it's convenient. There are a few restaurants on the island itself but for the most part, it's housing/lodging along the main beach road. They do have one "general store" for convenience on the island side but you will pay for that convenience, of course. The beaches, access areas, and most common areas I've seen are kept well maintained. If you want a nice quiet beach getaway on the southern NC coast, Holden Beach is a good place to consider visiting.

Novembers are lovely too, but bring your jacket. It's even less crowded that time of year.read more
