The way they speak and look at white men is way different than how they talk to us. They watch and shake their head at my daughter even though we are having fun naming the different veggies, they allow white customers to cut us as we are standing very clearly ready to pay. I always buy a variety of overpriced items from pizza to plants to fruits, and yet my purchases feel unappreciated. I love to support local small business. Blueberry picking at Higher Taste is a can't miss summer event in our family. My kid calls it the…read more"blueberry tunnel". This isn't a fancy "farm" that's more of an amusement park (looking at you, Carpinitos). It's just a huge patch of blueberries! It's also a nice size to bring a little kid, you won't need to walk long distances. I recommend moving around because different areas of the patch have different blueberry types. We easily picked 7 lbs in about an hour and froze them for the future.

There are many shady areas to pick from and a nice cool shady area in front of their little inside store for the pickers that need a break. I brought the toddler nephews who weren't much help picking. But the staff treated them like they were their own family. The kids played and I picked. It was a nice afternoon activity with a built in fresh snack. The grounds were gorgeous and extremely well maintained. Gorgeous flowers everywhere. Bonus: The owners never use pesticides on the berries. The Buckets are sanitized after each use and the staff show you the best picking areas when you arrive. We will definitely be back.

I grew up in a place where berries didn't grow wild, but things like avocados and oranges were in abundance. Now that I have discovered this pick-your-own berries and subscription farm, though, all of this has changed. Today was my second visit to the delightfully lush Lazy River Farm down south, in Kent. Lazy River Farm is right now teeming with raspberries and blueberries that you can pick for $1.50 per pound. This is about one-fourth the price I pay for frozen berries at Whole Foods. But please don't make me calculate the cost of my gas in this equation since I am so happy thinking about how I am fiscally savvy to be picking my own. Plus, it's really, really fun! Visit Lazy River Farm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 9-5. And be sure to follow all the instructions on the posted signs because these farmers are serious about their wonderful berries.
