Who'd have thought you'd find good sushi in Spencer IA? Not this guy... What a nice surprise. Open for dine-in. Staff was masked up. They were quick to greet us, seat us, and attentive throughout our stay. Four rolls and an order of crab rangoon (6). $40 and change before tip. The same in the Des Moines metro would be $60ish. A very nice find while on the road. Pro tip though... When they say spicy they mean spicy. No need to add extra wasabi because you assume it's going to be "Iowa hot." read more

We have been to Oriental restaurants from San Francisco to Washington DC and points like Dallas & Chicago in between. Chen's holds it's own nicely with a pleasant atmosphere and authentic Asian staff in the middle of a land settled by Norsemen. A very unexpected jem. read more

I have to say this is hands down the best sushi we have ever had. Very generous portions of tuna in our rolls. I had a tempura tuna roll (had never seen tempura sushi roll before in our travels) and it was exquisite. Hubby got the volcano roll. Both were good and I wouldn't favor one over the other but hubby ultimately liked the tempura roll slightly better. We both got a bowl of soup. He had egg drop and I had hot and sour. Warning: the bowl is enough for four if not six people! Keep that in mind. We got egg rolls for appetizer and they arrived freshly made and steaming hot. The menu is extensive and rather than offering one style of Asian food offers Japanese, Thai, Chinese and maybe more. You can also order a pot of specialty Japanese tea for the table. Will have to try that next trip. Our service was prompt, attentive, and friendly. Food arrived in timely manner. Store and convenience rooms are very clean. Prices are very good. All in all, we are impressed to find such a quality Asian food restaurant in the middle of, well, the Midwest! Update: we have been back to Chen's at least five more times and have never been disappointed. Tried the pot of hot tea, Jasmine and also Kings something or other....I think that is what it is called. Generous amount of exquisite tea. Service has always been friendly and prompt. If meal took longer at times it is because it is all made when ordered and fresh. But never a inordinately long wait. read more

5 Stars, because if you are looking for Chinese in Spencer, Iowa: Come Here. Wanton soup, Mongolian beef, chicken and mushroom - all excellent. The do carry out and dine in. Atmosphere is great and service very friendly. Honestly, their pho was a little off in the broth, but pho is not exactly Chinese and I honestly cannot find it anywhere else within a 40 minute drive, so in that regard, I'll take what I can get. Very fast at take-out & great food! I love the Pork Egg Too Young. Yumm. Fun atmosphere if you choose to dine in, & many options you will not find anywhere else in Spencer. The Eel was NOT to our liking, but my husband has to say he tries everything at least once. Have never had a bad meal here, the general tso's chicken is great and all of their sushi rolls are on point.

The take out food was so bad it was thrown in the trash! The meat was All fat and tough. The shrimp was mush and the dumpling tasted sour. The vegetable dish was covered with rancid peanuts and the dish should not have had nuts in it at all! I called them and they offered no compensation or apology for the awful food that was awfully expensive. I was a long time customer who will not be returning. read more
