Decided upon this place at the recommendation of my mother in law after remembering my finance having previously stated liking the place and then looking up some reviews! The inside is a little dated but not horrible. There was a ton of staff on this day, which was surprising for an early afternoon. It wasn't too crazy busy but also definitely seemed like a staple place for the area based on the steady traffic. The food prices weren't bad at all and portions are really good! As soon as I ordered I heard my food hit the wok. The menu is limited; I couldn't order my standard Mongolian beef (though I bet you could talk them into making it.) I got the chicken and beef teriyaki dinner combo. The entree was pretty good: good meat, lots of fresh veggies, in a standard teriyaki sauce. The fried rice was... fried rice. No veggies or anything. Still, a nice side. The egg roll was mediocre and small. Cash only. Pop is in bottles, but there is real silverware. All in all a decent lunch. Nothing special compared to a big city, but just fine when it's the only Chinese place in town, and the competition is Subway or pizza.

That's on par if not cheaper than a growing amount of fast food options out there. Now quality? Okay, some options can be better. We recently moved from the area to Columbus and we've found ourselves making the trip back for Ichiban. The manager is a sweetheart! If something makes you unhappy, you tell him, he'll make it better. He's friendly and attentive and we've talked several times about markets in Columbus and authentic places to eat in MY area so I don't have to drive to see him. How sweet is that? He's even treated us to an appetizer or desert now and then and mine always comes with an orchid. LOVE that! The staff are very friendly, attentive and helpful with questions and assistance with food allergies or even their preference. I've heard the manager discretely say something to staff and they are right on it, making sure every customer's needs are met. The sushi is very, very good and we love to sit at the bar, nibble on salad or miso soup and watch Chef practice his art. Meats are held at the perfect temp, each piece is made with love and the plate is beautifully decorated with flowers or painted with a sauce to look like a dragon or heart. Don't miss the Ikura (salmon roe sushi.) Little bursts of salt water with each bite! We have gone with friends who are not sushi eaters and their food was very good. The noodles are great, the chicken and shrimp are always just right. We have never been seated at the hibachi because our tables always want something different. We'll be back many times over.

Then they gave us only one sauce with the entree (supposed to be like yum-yum sauce...weird sweet and not a Japanese flavor at all). Next was our "Habachi chef"...lousy engagement with the table, did nothing to "perform" and entertain the kids (or adults) at our table. We also could barely understand him - not sure if it was a language barrier or him mumbling - he clearly could care less about his job or engaging with the customers. His cooking skills were dismal at best...used little oil, used little butter, added WATER TO EVERYTHING he cooked...and it tasted like it. Shrimp cooked with water is just steamed shrimp that is rubbery. NO FLAVOR and should have saute/soy color on it...no color at all (see pic) - no lemon even on his cart. The fried rice was a joke...white rice (with more water added on the grill) had tiny bit of soy sauce and 2 eggs for 5 orders of fried rice - no lemon...THAT'S IT...NO GREEN ONION, NO MUSHROOM, NO SESAME SEEDS and again no hibachi grill color to it. We could have gotten a better Japanese meal at Wendy's (and should have). We had no soy sauce on the table - had to go and ask at the bar for some. When they cleared our plates (with 1/2 the food on them), I told them that dinner was not good, but even that didn't get any attention...everyone suddenly couldn't communicate. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY AT Ichiban Sushi & Hibachi in Mt. Vernon. Drive 40 minutes to Columbus to House of Japan or Benihana...where they at least care about the customer experience and know how to make Hibachi food!
