This is located in the Middlebury Edge medical arts plaza next to Vinnie's Pizza and Legends of Superheros comic book store. Came here to dine in on a Sunday afternoon. Very empty. Was served by a nursing student in hot yoga pants. Sunday sushi special is 1 free regular roll with the order of 2 regular rolls. The rolls were on the small side but otherwise pretty good - I got a salmon skin roll, boston roll, and yellowtail veg roll with scallions (other veg choice was cucumber). The yellowtail roll didn't have very many scallions... For entrees we ordered a Four Seasons and a Vegetable Chow Fun. So they have the Chow Fun with the thick rice noodles, which was nice. Also requested no added sodium and they obliged but this meant that nothing had sauce, except the salmon skin roll. read more

I consider myself a Chinese food snob since growing up near San Fran, CA. I am always in search of a good Chinese restaurant near Watertown CT and found it! I always get the ribs which are amazing and actually everything on menu comes out piping hot and delicious! Better yet is the happy hour 7 days a week! 2-5pm; 1/2 price wine and $1 off beer...an I think thy have sushi specials as well..our waitress (sorry, don't know her name) is always attentive. read more

My husband and I had dinner here last Saturday. I must say we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The service was prompt and efficient. Our server was very attentive. The food was excellent. Try the black pepper chicken. Had a nice little kick and was very tasty. My husband had his usual chicken and mixed vegetables which he really enjoyed as well. Portions were good size. I go to Cheng square all the time, and order takeout even more frequently. Tonight I ordered food and got sidetracked and completely forgot about it. They called to remind me and ask if I still wanted it, and even ended up staying half an hour after they closed to allow me to come pick up my food. They were super nice and understanding about the whole thing. I loved Cheng square before, but now it's definitely my number 1 go to spot for amazing food. Great place for Chinese food and sushi. The service is prompt and the food is very consistent. I think they need to offer a few more choices on the kids menu, not all children will eat Chinese food. I try to avoid the usual Chinese takeout chains and attempt to find good authentic Chinese food. So we decided to try Cheng Square. Turns out that it's no different than your corner Chinese takeout restaurant. We ordered szechuan chicken which lacked flavor and was just ehhh. Also the pork fried rice that was mediocre with veggie dumpling fried that were filled with some sort of gross veggies. The egg rolls were terrible. I ended up packing the food up and giving it to my brother in law because thats how much I like him . He's also a human garbage disposal. read more

I'm not too picky about sushi and even find supermarket sushi okay when I'm starving and in a rush. I have to say, this place has the worse sushi ever. Most of their fish was just bad. On top of that, they served me a piece of smoked salmon?! I pass by this place every time I have to get my car serviced and I can't help but make a face when I see this place. I've come here numerous times and always have enjoyed the food. People here are always super nice. Occasionally the wait for takeout is long but usually never an issue. I used to play magic next door and would come over for food during. It's also very close to my mom's house. I don't come here anymore due to personal issues because an ex still goes here but I'll order take out instead of eat in just in case I run into him. This is my first time at Cheng square. My interest is sushi takeout. My order was excellent. Their service from the original Order call to pick up was superior. Have had lunch with friends here quite a few times over the last few years, a good experience each time. The lunch combo platters start at $6.50 and top out at $7.00. The portions are generous, and the pot of green tea, bowl of crispy wonton noodles, and delicious dipping sauce are complementary, so if you leave 20% for the server you'll be out of there, loosening your belt, for under $8.50. I hate to admit how unadventurous I have been at Cheng Square, and I do intend to branch out in my ordering sooner or later. However, my first meal there was the combination chicken with cashews platter, and I enjoyed so much that I keep ordering it. It's definitely a cut above a lot of Chinese restaurant fare. The food is attractively presented on stylish white dinnerware, and everything looks appetizing and freshly-made, even though I've always gone there after 1 p.m. to avoid the lunch rush. No bottom-of-the-pot leavings. And no "mystery meat" - the chicken is tender white meat with a golden crispy coating. I really appreciate that they offer the option of brown rice instead of white for a small additional charge. Well worth it, to my mind, and always perfectly cooked - just chewy enough, every grain separate, never mushy or undercooked. A staple for lunch for me here when I'm at work! I work at Shakers Kia in Watertown and probably once or twice a month me or my co-workers will indulge in this place. They have amazing Chinese food, I usually get the beef and broccoli, but they also do General Tsos with white meat or dark! Probably the best chicken wings in town, they even do a garlic ginger sauce on em if u like. Everything is really good, and the guy behind the counter knows me by name which is pretty excellent. Lastly they have legends if superheroes next door so whilst I wait for my food to be prepared I can look at comics and magic cards, both of which they have the best selection around! OK so they also do Japanese, I like it, but Sakura has them beat on the sushi front. I mean I love these guys don't get me wrong, but Chinese food is their strong point... Oh and the prices there are crazy low so for a lunch portion it's about $6.50 not bad at all. All in all, my favorite work food spot, and for Americanized Chinese they have really good recipes. read more

I tried this place after reading the reviews. I will never go back. The food was gross very greasy. The restaurant needs an update in decor. Chairs, tables are old the booths seats are ripped and the rug is full of stains and smells bad. This restaurant is ran by a bunch of poorly dressed young staff that looked like they rolled out of bed and threw on clothes from the dirty clothes, One waiter had on these dirty sneakers on. My husband and I were curious when we heard this new restaurant had recently opened, as we are always on the look out for good Chinese food. The service was good, The menu was pretty extensive. We ordered our usual 'test' dishes. General Tso chicken (they offer white meat in this dish) Cold noodles, and fried vegetable dumplings. They were all fine, but could use a bit more spice. On our second visit, we ordered other things, and here is they way it stands now: The General Tso's chicken wasn't as good as the first time, the hot and sour soup was just so-so and the spring roll was pretty good. Another person in our party ordered the orange chicken, and it pretty much tasted the same as the General Tso. The wait-staff is very young and ,non-Asian, with the exception of the Sushi guy and owner. This makes me feel as if I've walked into a generic american restaurant that just happens to offer asian dishes. The staff seems to be unfamiliar with how some of the dishes are prepared, which means that they have to run to the back and ask the chef or owner what is in the dish.I think that some of this could be excusable because the place is new and the staff is getting used to everything, but the food has been brought to the level of'" very Connecticut.",meaning a bit on the bland side (even when you request extra extra spicy) and suprisingly not very salty at all. This can be a plus if you are watching your salt intake. However I found that I had to sprinkle a bit of soy sauce on my meal to make it actually taste like chinese food. I ordered vegetable dumplings that while not bad tasting, were quite doughy. Vegetable fried rice, mediocre, eggplant with garlic sauce, meh, and I asked for extra spicy, didn't get it, had to ask for hot sauce, which was more like Tabasco without the kick. Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong things. I want to be clear: the food is not awful, it's presented nicely arrives hot (albeit not spicy) but there's just no zing. I want my taste buds to sing, not lapse into a coma. If you are not a fan of super spicy food you will probably like this place. I was MIA at Cheng Square last Friday. I called in a small order and the girl said "20 MINUTES!!" Visiting my father I informed him that I would be right back. Well after 1 1/2 hours he finally called me and was extremely worried. Where was I? Up at the Cheng Square Restaurant along with 9 other unfortunates waiting for our order. This was my first experience in take out from this establishment and I was extremely disappointed with their WAIT TIME. No apology was given. It would have been nice if they extended a discount on my order. I have NEVER waited so long for any take out. Sushi was good but my frame of mind after that ordeal was not worth it. Just be prepared to WAIT!!!!! Call ahead 2 hours from when you want it .. maybe you'll get your take out when you arrive. read more

Upon arriving to Cheng Square amidst the frigid New England weather I was greeted with a lovely hello and a warm cup of tea. At this point in time I was having quite the dandy time and rather excited for future courses to arrive. I ordered the hot and spicy soup that came quite quickly and oh golly gee was that tasty. I called to place my order at 6pm. I was told 50 minutes which seems excessive for Chinese food. I arrived at 6:50, paid for my order and waited. After 15 minutes, we were told the white rice was not available and so the chaos began. There were several people waiting and they were offering fried rice or brown rice. I opted for the fried rice and after waiting another 10 minutes, I arrived home to find out the rice was not included anyway. I try to support local businesses but I am done with this restaurant. Last time my family and I went, it was during the winter. We were sat in a part of the restaurant where there were drafts from the door opening. When we requested a different table, we were allowed to move, but it was still cold. Needless to say, we didn't stay too long, and didn't order anything. Frankly, I am shocked at how good the food, atmosphere, service and prices are at Cheng Square! Tucked into a side plaza of the Middlebury Edge medical building, I passed by this place at least 100 times before I ever saw that its dark windows actually contained a warm and inviting atmosphere- in fact, the first few months I thought it was a closed-down restaurant- and its a good thing too- if I had known, I would weigh 25 more pounds consisting of only wontons and egg rolls! Cheng Square has never failed to disappoint me. I have sampled upwards of 20 different menu items from classic Cantonese dishes to fresh sushi and each thing has been fresh and delicious. My favorites are the crispy duck, chicken chow mein, and curry beef. They fry their own crispy noodles too, which I always consider a mark of class with Chinese fare. Another nice point is that it is a very pleasant in-house dining room- so often you can only take-out for Chinese but at Cheng Square you can actually dine in comfort and elegance. I love Cheng Square. The prices are great, the food is good, portions decent, and they have icecream! My only complaint is that, just in the past few months, I've been getting a bad waitress. She once forgot to give us the bill and left us sitting after our meal, for over an hour. We didn't go find her because we were having a conversation anyways, but there were a ton of people who were waiting to be seated. Every time we ask her for something, we either don't get it or have to ask again. "Would you like more chips?" "Yes" No chips. "Do you need chopsticks with that sushi?." "Yes." 10 minutes later." etc. I recommend Cheng Square to sushi fans looking for a bargain, especially those who have friends who don't like sushi, since the menu offers many options. However, I could do without that one waitress. She never earns her tips, but she always gets one anyway. read more

This place is amazing. My friends and I made reservations for 630PM on New Years Eve and they had the table waiting for us. Hot tea and fried wonton strips are complementary. On top of that-- the food is FRESH. Not greasy and the prices are totally reasonable as they could up-charge if they really wanted to because of how fresh the food is and the atmosphere. What blew me away was my boyfriend who is allergic to mushrooms neglected to inform the waiter when he ordered so when all of our food came out, he realized his mistake and notified the waitress. The OWNER (I am assuming)... brought a new plate out not even 5 minutes later without mushrooms apologizing (which it wasn't his fault) and they didn't charge us for a second entree. The food is always good, the sushi can be inconsistent depending on who is making it. It would be a three maybe even a four if they fixed the booths. They are taped rather then replaced and the service is always spotty. It is still my go to place for Chinese in the area because the food is good but please fix the service and the chairs. Also, try the fried ice cream. The ice-cream is nothing spectacular t but the crust is fantastic. read more
