Tonight, DH and I decided to have Chinese. We've had some of the gluten free options here before and they were good, so we decided to try it again. We got chicken wings, coconut shrimp, General Tso's Beef, Egg Foo Young, and Teriyaki Chicken w/Vegetables - all gluten free and without salt. The General Tso's Beef was indistinguishable from the glutened variety. The spice level was low-medium, which was great for me. DH prefers blazing hot, so it was rather tame for him. Beef was cooked well as were the veggies. Sauce was silky and not gloppy. The Teriyaki Stirfried Chicken and Veggies was very light. The chicken was small pieces of chicken battered and fried with a light teriyaki sauce and veggies that were stir fried to a crisp-tender. It was rather delicious. The Egg Foo Young came three to a box and had the most interesting gravy. It was white wine and scallions with a touch of soy. So very good! The Coconut Shrimp were awesome. Just shrimp and coconut with a sweet orange dipping sauce. The shrimp were small for the price and while we completely enjoyed these, I'm not sure we will order them again. The Chicken Wings were standard Chinese food chicken wings. Crispy. Juicy. Super large chicken wings. They're a classic for a reason. Overall, we really enjoyed our dinner and I haven't gotten sick, so that's a huge bonus. We will definitely be back when the craving strikes. read more

The tangerine chicken was cut so thin and was so over cooked that it was like rubber - completely inedible. The crab Rangoon and chicken fingers were also over cooked and tasted like burnt oil. His name is Frank and I will be sharing my experience with my friends, family and co-workers because when I called today to speak to Kimmy about my bad and embarrassing experience last night- she would not even take my call. Frank said "oh, is this about last night"? We should let that go. Kimmy is too busy now to chat with you. " WTF?!! Haven't been to Chen Yang Li's in 2 years to the date on the Chinese New Year. I always considered it the finest Chinese food around. We were extremely disappointed in how much things have changed! The service was fair, especially considering their weren't many customers their. The dining room was very cold, and at a table near us, all of the people were eating with their jackets on. My wife came back from the bathroom and said it was filthy and the most disgusting bathroom she'd ever seen. We ordered some Pineapple rice and specifically said we did not want anything in it (I.E. chicken/beef/shrimp). It arrived with chicken in it. The men's room was also disgusting and so outdated with old, outdated tile. The urinal was filthy and outside of the bowl had not been cleaned in some time. Ordered take out from them, specifically the Royal Filet (filet mignon, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and baby corn). What I received was not the Royal Filet, but beef with vegetables (broccoli, peas, carrots, water chestnuts, and button mushrooms). When I took the order back, they took the food back to the "chef", who then came out into the waiting area with the food that was taken back, which magically had a couple baby corn and a slice of shiitake mushroom on it, and proceeded to argue with me that what I received (no baby corn or shiitake) was the royal filet. She was completely unprofessional and confrontational. Classic bait and switch and hope the customer is too stupid to notice that what they got was not what they ordered. We tried this restaurant for take out . It was on our list of different places to try and the reviews were really good. Sadly, we didn't have a great experience. We ordered Sesame Chicken and Sesame Beef. The beef was so incredibly dry and tough that I couldn't eat it. The chicken was marginally better so we shared that one meal. When I called to order, I asked about getting a side of sautéed green beans but was told they don't offer them as a side dish. We will try the next place on our list and hope for better results. Today 4 of my friends and I took our 4 toddlers here for lunch. Not only were several of the high chairs broken, they gave us a hard time about needing so many. They were clearly not impressed by our presence. The wait staff was rude and service was horrible as if they were "put out" by our being there. The food is good, but this is definitely not a family friendly restaurant. Several of my friends and I posted our concerns on their Facebook account and they did not address them; they were simply deleted. One of my friends even called the manager and he offered no apology. I should note that a week prior we'd gone there for lunch and we were asked to move into another area after already being seated.....definitely not accommodating for youngsters. Needless to say my friends and I (and anyone else I can inform) will NOT be eating at Chen Yang Li EVER again. read more

I have been going to Chen Yang Li for the last four years. Over this time, I've come to know the owners (Kim and Frank) and the wait staff. We love this place and the people who make us feel welcome and well fed! We started coming to Chen Yang Li after we moved to the area. We used to take my mother here every Saturday for lunch, and we ate our way across the menu over time. We have our favorites: Ginger Shrimp and Scallops with String Beans is a particular favorite; we like the Pineapple Fried Rice, the Hot and Sour Soup, the Ginger Salad (LOVE the dressing), the Seafood Rice Noodle Soup (a little bland, but nice and clean flavors), the standard General Tso's Chicken, and the Sushi (pretty tasty and generous portions). The Lo Mein is good and tasty as well. I'm not particularly fond of the 'East Coast' (brown) fried rice here and at most restaurants on this side of the country, which is why we opt for the Pineapple version when we're in the mood. This is not 'real' Chinese food. I'm half Chinese and grew up eating the real deal. South Garden in Merrimack has the closest thing to 'real' Chinese in the area. However, I find the dining experience pleasant and the food consistently good at Chen Yang Li. Lunch specials are particularly a good deal, and the friendly, warm and caring service we get from Kim and Frank make this a place we will continue to visit. read more

I love Chen-Yang Li! It's my favorite, go-to, Chinese food restaurant whenever I'm near home. The owners couldn't be nicer and the food is always good. I recommend the steamed dumplings and soy sauce is superb. Fantastic hot & sour soup! This place is classy, friendly and always curtious! They have a couple of private rooms for smaller dinner parties, besides the main dinning area. In fact, I had my Bridal Shower in one of them! They created a special menu for my guests and had an assigned server for our area make sure we had everything we needed. Wonderful people, wonderful food! Worst service EVER. Food was good but our waiter was horrible. Drinks arrived after our meals and mine was wrong. Ten minutes after giving it back he had to ask how to make the basic cocktail i wanted. I told him to forget it, i knew that was a bad sign for another mistake. My sushi was also wrong and he gave my husband sushi and he didnt even order it. He seemed all over the place and spacey. He rushed our meal and we were out in less than an hour, never asked if we wanted more drinks, and charged us for the drink i returned. Sadly we will never return again. I had no idea what I was in for being stuck in Bedford for the day and with a bad Asian fix. I called then around noon with a takeout order that was ready in a quick 15 minutes. The veggie lo mein was good, but contained baby corn (I'm up for anything new, but no thanks in that case). Scallion pancakes and spring rolls were great additions too, The service was friendly, the building in a great location and clean inside. The prices were a bit above average because it's Bedford, but I don't mind paying for a bit of extra quality over bad takeout. Used to go to Sun Shui in Bedford. Found chen yang li to be a great substitute until tonight. I went to the restaurant for pick up at the time the restaurant instructed me to. Checked into the restaurant and was not greeted by the older woman at the desk. She was staring at the computer and ignoring me. She eventually blurted out "your order isn't ready yet." I waited outside for another twenty minutes. Still no sign of the order. I went back and spoke with the older gentleman who could not find my order. The older woman popped out and said "Oh it's this guy again. I told you the wok is shut off so it's going to be a little longer." She never told me that prior. I politely asked to cancel my order as she went to the kitchen to check my order. She came out and told me it's not ready yet and that I was ridiculous for canceling and that "20 minutes is not a long wait." The restaurant was dead and I had to only order during my entire wait there. She then pointed behind behind the gentleman at the desk and said oh your order is right there. It had been on the rear desk the entire time. i had to ask three more times to cancel. I was then yelled at as i was leaving the building. Great service guys! Not to be confused with the sub par, name-stealing Nashua location, Chen Yang Li is very decent! Like most Chinese restaurants the luncheon specials are the best bang for your buck. For example; Ginger Shrimp & Scallops with String Beans, with choice of lo mien or rice, soup, 2 chicken fingers and crab rangoon is just under $10. The sushi is hit or miss, but i love Snow Mountain (shrimp tempura maki topped with crab meat salad). The drinks are pretty powerful. The restaurant is a couple doors down from Elizabeth Grady, so its the perfect stop for lunch after a day of beauty. read more

I am a huge fan of this place, Went here this past Friday around 9pm, No wait at all, Had a Mai Tia to drink, nice and strong and reasonably priced. we shared the Pu Pu platter for 1 which was very good, I had the Phoenix and the dragon ( lobster vegetables and general tso's), the +1 had the general tso's. Both meals came with a rice and served family style. both were very good, service was good. The only reason they do not get 5 stars is because of the lobster, It was either processed lobster or crab meat, it was not fresh lobster and did not taste like lobster, I guess that's what i get for getting lobster at a Chinese place. I wont let that phase me though, everything else was top notch. This is also probably one of the nicer Chinese atmospheres in the area as well. read more

We simply asked for a refund after waiting for 2 hours and not receiving our food. The young man was the one making disparaging remarks about the Asian community, using insulting slurs. Again we just asked for a refund. He continued to insult my husband and threatened to call the cops. Again we just asked for a refund. He finally refunded our money we left. I will never return to this place and the owners should be ashamed of how their employee/son acted and treated us. They accepted too many orders the kitchen was not able too keep up, they created their own problem. I would prefer to give them zero stars. read more

The last two times there the fish, mainly the Salmon was very slimy and the rice was not sticky enough to stay together without splashing soy sauce all over your shirt. We ate there a few weeks ago (Thanksgiving time frame) the food was sub-par and not even worthy of taking home. Giving them the benefit of a doubt we ordered take out today. The General Tso's chicken was lacking flavor and the vegetables were gray and clearly not freshly cooked for the order. The pork fried rice was filled with diced carrots and peas with hardly any pork to be found. The dish was watery and had no flavor whatsoever. Sadly we will not return to this establishment.
