Be forewarned - this is less of a review but a romance novel starring our photographer, Danny Bergin of Chellise Michael Photography (CMP), as its main protagonist. In photographs I typically have either RBF or a double chin because I'm usually laughing. I also cringe at the standard posed wedding photography and knew right off the bat that it would be a mission to find a wedding photographer that would be up for the challenge. So if you're like me, you may dread the thought of choosing a wedding photographer. It was by chance that I came across CMP's photographs while browsing on Pinterest. They immediately caught my eye; they were editorial, intimate and full of personality. Bottom line - stunning. Fortunately CMP had one photographer available for our date -- Danny. We lucked out because he is not only extremely talented in his craft, but also a total gem of a person. The photographs from our engagement shoot (WHICH COMES WITH YOUR PACKAGE AND IS AN AMAZING BENEFIT OF CMP'S SERVICES) made it immediately clear that Danny has a superb eye and was able to capture our personality as a couple. I've been non-stop spamming friends and family with our wedding photographs since we've received them; and which Danny delivered in record time. I'm in complete awe of how Danny was able to capture the vibe of our wedding in such a natural way. It goes without saying that wedding photographs aren't just for the couple, but also for the friends and family. So I want to share some verbatim messages I received from our attendees (who include people who work in the fashion industry, my highly critical family and people who have gone to at least 8 weddings last year) which really underscore Danny's stellar photography skills: "HOLY $H!T YOUR WEDDING PHOTOS!! I'm obsessed with all of them!" "The photos really capture you guys" "I'm done. Unwell this aesthetic. who is this photographer?!" "Your photographer was on it! They did a really great job!" We are simply enthralled by the incredible artistry and creative narrative vision of Mike, Chellise, and their team. Their ability to capture authenticity, beauty, meaning-- and even the sublime-- went way above and beyond any of our expectations. In particular, we enjoy the rich saturated hues and style of 1960s Italian (a la Dario Argento) and French New Wave cinema, so we wanted to recreate those moments in our portraits. To Chellise and Michael...I feel like we have been friends in another life and were finally brought together at our wedding. Your energy was amazing, it feels like you brought extra magic to our special celebration. Some backstory: my wife tasked me with finding our wedding photographer, we had visited about 10 venues and each venue had given us a list of recommended vendors. After visiting all the photographer websites on those lists, and going through all the wedding photographers on NYMag's wedding directory, I was a bit overwhelmed with wedding photography. After viewing dozens of sites, I became concerned that our wedding photos would be generic, which is something I wanted to avoid. While going through wedding portfolio blogs, I noticed that most photographers tended to have a template for their work, with each wedding looking more or less the same, and many of the shots looked posed and rehearsed. Chellise and Michael's site was noticeably different than the rest, in terms of design and content. I felt an immediate connection to their photos. Every wedding or photoshoot they did was completely different, all their photos were about capturing people, emotion, and the priceless moments that you can cherish for the rest of your life. Not only that, the photo style was remarkable, the quality was the perfect approach to our wedding aesthetic. I also loved that none of their photos were watermarked, nothing, they were real photos, they were making art. I really appreciated those small details and knew these were the photographers I wanted to hire. I spent the whole day at work going through the 20 pages on their blog, looking at every shoot, I was enthralled. I had already sent a few emails to different vendors that were on the maybe list and Chellise was the first to write back. Some vendors took over a week to reply, communication is important and that is another place where they excel. We spoke on the phone and decided to book them immediately, we didn't want to risk losing the date. Now that we were booked, we were also entitled to an engagement shoot, it was their idea to meet before the wedding and spend a few hours together, that way we are more comfortable at the party and the photos are more natural. Fast forward a few months, we met at Mother's Ruin on Spring Street and got some cocktails and beers. We chatted for a bit, got to know each other, and then started walking around the Lower East Side while they took photos of us. They have a great eye for detail, noticing things we didn't even see. They have great chemistry together and really bring a good time, our photos turned out fantastic, we were so happy! After seeing the photo album from that day, we knew our wedding photos were going to be incredible. As our wedding approached, Chellise was in close contact, we exchanged emails discussing our wedding schedule and picked a time for them to arrive at our hotel so they can begin the personal photography of our wedding. What I really liked was how they were with us from just chilling in our room, to getting ready, hanging with family before, the first look, the ceremony, the dinner, and the party. They were there, snapping photos, but they were also invisible, in the sense that they were not annoying or having everyone stop to do a photo. They went with the flow, capturing candid photos, while also creating a well curated timeline of our wedding. It was very special. I also really appreciated the detail they captured at our venue. On top of all our people photos, they also documented our wedding venue so perfectly, every time we look at the photos we are immediately transported back to that environment. Their photos capture all your senses and will leave you with a strong memory of your special day. As a graphic designer, the most important thing to me about my wedding was the photography. I honestly don't remember how I came across their website, but I immediately fell in love with their style. Then I watched their "hello" section video and stopped looking. The engagement shoot was a wonderful chance to get to know them and for them to warm us up in front of the camera - which neither my husband or I are comfortable in front of. I know a ton of wedding photographers and I used to own a wedding photography business so I know a bit more than most people what makes a good wedding photographer. (I now teach photography.) When we first looked for a wedding photographers it seemed to me that all the photos lacked imagination and originality and captured the same lame posed images of the couples they shot. Everyone's work looked the same. After looking at a bunch of potential photographers, I said to my wife, 'you choose because I don't see a difference. Oh, and I'm not doing anything corny like jumping in the air or walking down a hill high-fiving my groomsmen.' My wife asked me to look at one more potential photographer. I agreed expecting to see the same stock pictures. But I was blown away by what she showed me. The people behind the camera in these pictures captured what I imagined it would be like looking at my own wedding photos. The pictures were fantastic. They told a captivating story. I am no artist, but looking at their portfolio with my wife I really appreciated the talented artists telling the wedding stories we were looking at. I imagined the couples looking back at the story of their wedding day years down the road, reliving the day as it went down, not cringing at cheesy pictures they wished were never taken. I said to my wife that I hoped the photographer wasn't booked and that we should lock her in immediately if she was available. Luckily for us, Chellise and Mike were free on our wedding day and we booked them! Then we met the duo at a little bar on the Lower East Side to have a drink and take engagement shots. Now, I have always thought that engagement shots are cheesy as hell, but their wedding pictures were so different and so much better than anything else I'd seen, so I thought it'd be good to meet Chellise and Mike to see what they were all about. Man, am I glad we met up with them. After spending a few hours walking around taking pictures with two fun people who felt like old friends, we ended up at another bar for drinks and food. Chellise Michael Photography was introduced to me through DJ Gatsby, whom I booked for my engagement party. I was looking for a photographer to come in and shoot the party and also do a quick engagement shoot with my fiance and I prior to the party. For our wedding, we used Chellise's associate photographers Sarah Kuszelewicz and Daniel Orren. They were an extremely friendly team and far better than we could have wished. They offered a free photo-shoot before the wedding to make sure we were comfortable in front of the camera and to provide a sample of their photos. Our shots at Lincoln Center and Central Park came out amazing. Prior to our wedding at iCi, they scoped out offsite shooting locations, so when the wedding day came around, they knew where to take us without wasting any time. Daniel and Sarah got along very well with our families and our pictures are incredible! Our guests also commented that they blended so well into the background that they weren't aware their pictures were being taken. On top of that, they like to capture life as it happens, so most of the pictures had no instructions. They just told us to talk to each other and they'd capture the moment. They certainly did! I come from a South Asian culture, where there are hundreds of bright colored weddings and lackluster photography seems to be a norm. Chellise and Mike are the best! My husband is a photographer so finding like-minded artists to capture our day was the most important element of our wedding. Before we even met with Mike and Chellise, we fell in love with the documentary style of their work and their attention to texture, architecture, and sunlight. We had Chellise do our wedding photos at the Standard Hotel and on the Highline in NYC during mini hurricane Joaquin. The conditions (both weather and guests) were stormy at best but Chellise handled it like a pro. She maneuvered seamlessly between my demanding family, and tenuous weather while capturing beautiful real moments. Chellise has an artists' eye; capturing moments that I think only she sees. She made us look like our true selves, only maybe, definitely cooler. We couldn't love our photographs and our photographer more. We hired Chellise Michael photography for our wedding. Chellise was our photographer and she did a wonderful job. We loved doing a portrait session ahead of time at our apartment. She really helped us feel comfortable in front of the camera and being photographed by her so that the night of the wedding it was like she was just another friend and not stressful at all (and this from a couple that really isn't great at being photographed or being the center of attention). The photos from the portrait session came out beautifully and we can't wait to see the photos from the wedding itself! Chellise really captured the true personality in my normally camera shy daughter. She was personal, efficient in use of time and fun in a way that made the entire experience enjoyable. I've met a TON of wedding photographers being in the industry, but Chellise is head above shoulders the best I've ever met. We've worked a few events together and when she sent me pictures she took of me spinning and snapshots of the happy couples and they were amazing! Sarah and Quyn were our wedding photographers on 9/18. They were AMAZING. They were flexible, funny, hard working, professional but fun. Quyn met my husband at the hotel to take solo portraits of him and Sarah came to the venue to take solo portraits of me. We chose not to do a First Look, so they made the best of the limited time we had to take photos. The two of them handled the ceremony and reception like bosses. Also gotta give a shoutout to Amber who is super responsive and was patient when I couldn't do my math right and figure out what my balance was. We also had our Korean ceremony on 7/16 and those pictures came out great so I cant wait to see how these turn out. read more

we hired chellise Michael photography on a short notice to photograph an intimate event, not may people. I was impressed with samples of their work and felt confident we could expect similar results based on Yelp reviews... Chellise was very pleasant and responsive. However, the photos were a complete disaster. several family members took photos at the event with decent cameras and did a much better job. Chellise takes good pictures of food items but not people. I would not recommend Chellise. read more

Mike Busse is a damn genius. My fiancee and I don't live in NYC. We don't live in Jersey, or even anywhere on the Atlantic seaboard. We live in Chicago. We were in Manhattan for ONE DAY, and I was determined to take our engagement pictures on the Brooklyn Bridge. There were some crazy thunderstorms passing through all day, but we somehow convinced Mike to stick with us and see what things looked like at our appointed meeting time. The Gods were kind to us, and the rain *just* started to let up as we left the cafe where we met up. Then Mike proceeded to take some of the most beautiful photos either of us have ever seen. We picked him b/c of the gorgeous job he did with rainy day photos on their website, but we never could have predicted the kind of spur-of-the-moment, fantastic instincts he'd demonstrate. He is a true artist, never predictable, extremely personable, and actually cares about his subjects--wants to get to know you before he starts taking your picture. Just a genuine and wonderful person who we really enjoyed hanging out with; he makes you feel like you're just taking a walk with a friend who happens to have a camera. And a really freaking good eye. We are so grateful to have found him--and are positive that his wife must be equally amazing. read more
