The first time I went to Chela's, it was 2013 and I was working for a company that had me driving all around the area. I was really craving a good burrito on my way home. I searched Yelp for burritos, and I was half a mile from Chela's. So I stopped in, said it was my first time, and asked what would be good in a burrito. The dude at the counter suggested campechano (carne asada and chorizo), and I obliged. Holy crap, I can't tell you guys how happy I am that I happened upon this place. I now stop in once a week or so. Their tacos, burritos and tamales are incredible. Some of the best al pastor in the area. Their hot sauce has become my favorite (eat your heart out Sriracha and Cholula, you've been beat). A server there told me they make it in house with chile de arbol. Some of the kindest servers I've ever met work here, and I always know I'll be treated kindly while visiting Chela's. The owner, Adrian, is super nice. One time he overheard me telling the server how much I loved the hot sauce and he said something to the effect of, "comments like that are why I do this." West siders rejoice--Chela's has hit the 'hood. We've eaten in 2 or 3 times and gotten take out about 20--it is that addictive. Favorites: Campechana tacos (a mix of carne asada and chorizo). Al pastor quesadillas. Pork tamales. Chicken torta (ask them to add grilled veggies). Chela's rice (rice with pico de gallo and guacamole). Fresh limeade and hibiscus tea. Really everything I have put in my mouth. This is the ideal take out place (call ahead!) but the vibe is nice and relaxed for eating in too. We have little kids and it is very friendly for children (the $2.50 kid's quesadilla is a nice touch). The owners are just lovely--they want to get everything right and it shows. read more

Went there for lunch last week and was really surprised by all the fanfare considering what I got - had the fish tacos and the fish was pretty bad. Felt like it was old, and it had no zing to it, nothing that made me want to come back for more. Much better than Isalita's- basically family owned place, taco bell price for authentic mexican. Relaxed atmosphere, beautiful, simple decorations; and a great open space in the back for the summer fun. This is a hidden gem for the connoisseur. read more

I just went here for the first time, upon reading yelp reviews and noticing how close this place is to my house. I got the Daily Special for $5.50. It came with 2 tacos, a small side of rice and a small side of beans, and a drink. I got a beef taco (Al Pastor I think it was called - I forget) and Chipotle Chicken. Both were delicious. I got Horchata which was delicious as well. Also tried their limeade, which comes with the fountain drinks, also great. It comes with free salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. I'm amazed I could get all of this for under $6. The guy at the counter was also really nice and helpful. I'm definitely coming back here again soon. read more

I adore Chela's. The food is authentic Mexican street food, not smothered in sour cream and jack cheese. Tacos are excellent - fresh soft corn tortillas with several filling options. I usually go for the chorizo or el pastor, but the fish tacos are a standout too. The lunch special (available at dinner) is dirt cheap and includes two tacos or tamales, rice, beans, pickled veggies and a beverage. The horchata is addictive! Very fast, very inexpensive and very authentic. Don't be strayed by the strip mall and general surroundings. The place is truly spot on if your looking for authentic tacos. The staff are professional and very efficient. Dinning in maybe a issue because of the in and out environment but take a table towards the back and you will feel at ease with the surroundings. The menu has many offerings that are tasty and not over done by cost or flavor. This is not your get a basket of chips and eat garbage Mexican food. It's real taco's and side dishes that need to be ordered if your looking for a larger meal then just a couple of tacos. The place services many Mexican people who are running in for a quick meal on the go- you can tell that some people came out of the way to get this authentic meal. Took a Chela's newby there for lunch and he ate 5 tacos! Couldn't decide on which type to try, so we just ordered lots of variety. We all enjoyed the limeade too. I won't say it is cheap, but the meat is marinated in yummy sauce and the flavors really come through, so it's worth it. Usually I get double beans on the lunch special instead of the rice. Try some beans in your tacos. Last weekend we ate outside(it wasn't snowing then!), and that was nice too. This restaurant is simple, location has easy access, food is reasonable in price, but most importantly, great in quality. 2 locations in town, and the Maple Rd location seems to have slightly better quality (this I'm unsure why). I've eaten here a couple times and I really don't understand all the hype. They do have very different taco filling options from the usual Mexican restaurants, and the owner is very personable and provides great service. However, it does not really seem especially authentic -- it's more like a granola Mexican place, and it's filled with gringo hipsters, on both sides of the counter. For yummy, authentic Mexican you'd do better going across the street to Taco King. read more

I'm so excited that this is within walking distance of my condo.Food was excellent! Employees were extremely helpful and courteous. They ran out of lots of stuff but I'm not going to let that stop me from going back. I've never really liked the few tamales I've tried, but these were delicious! I even tried a few beverages since they sounded so unusual--Jamaican (rice milk) and tea, both were very tasty as well.
