Opened in 2014, Chef Zone is a free membership club for the food industry and home cooks in the general public. It is a division of Y. Hata & Co., which is its parent company, a Honolulu-based food service distributor with 100+ years of doing business in HI. Chef Zone is a one-stop cash and carry club for chefs, restaurants, catering companies, food trucks, home cooks, and other organizations that use food service products. Its 45,000 sq feet of space has a demo kitchen for workshops, demos, events, and promotions; tabletop showroom of glassware, china, flatware, bar supplies, catering supplies and equipment; and a business center that does menu engineering, food costing, graphic design, logo merchandise, web & social media, and business planning for its commercial businesses. It also has 5,000+ bulk or smaller items of fresh meat, fresh produce, frozen food/seafood, dairy, groceries, beverages, baked goods, Asian/ethnic products, disposables, cleaning supplies, restaurant supplies, and food service equipment. For home cooks in the public sector, you'll have to know your prices, as sometimes, the prices on the same products may be less expensive at Costco, Sam's Club, or if they are on sale at CVS Longs or at the local supermarkets. Instead, what you may be getting is a better selection of products, which may be in various sizes. You can also have access to imported and local products not available anywhere else in HI, especially gourmet items like edible flowers. I usually purchase the following from Chef Zone: * Flavor extracts/food colorings. I get the almond, lemon, and vanilla extracts, as well as food colorings for baking, as I may bake in bulk, and supermarkets sell these in small bottles at outrageous prices. * Seafood. For family celebrations, there are good prices on crab legs, scallops, and other seafood. * Ice cream scoops. I love the stainless-steel ice cream scoops in various sizes. Not only are they good for ice cream, but for measuring cookies so that they are consistent in size. * Paper baking items. I love the bulk cupcake paper containers, as I use a lot. Various other paper containers come in handy also. There are free demos on new products every so often during the year. Recently, there was a demo on making tonkatsu, and the end product was delicious! The premade batter is just mixed with water, then the pork mixed into it, then coated with panko, and it's ready to fry! No need to coat it with egg or flour! Restaurants would love this due to ease of making. I try not to fry at home, as trying to cut back on fried foods and not having to clean up messy oil splatters after frying. Both powdered batter and tonkatsu sauce were available for purchase. Similar to the tonkatsu batter, I'm certain that Chef Zone also has available fried chicken batter. Customer service is non-existent on the floor. You'll have to go to the Customer Service desk in the front for assistance. The warehouse interior is spacious with shelves constantly stocked with its large inventory. You can spend a lot of time just browsing through the many interesting items. Certain aisles appear dark, but as you get closer, lights come on automatically, which is an energy saver. And there's the huge refrigerated area where insulated jackets are supplied to you for ease of browsing in cold temperatures. Hours of operation are: Mon to Fri 6a to 4p, Sat/Sun 8a to 3p. The first two hours from Mon to Sat are reserved for food service members. Free membership cards are required for anyone making a purchase. Chef Zone has its own dedicated covered parking lot next to its entrance and exit, and parking is free. Chef Zone is an impressive warehouse for both professional food industry workers and for home cooks to gain access to hard-to-find items to showcase their cooking talents. Support local!

I've only recently found out about ChefZone. My husband heard about it, but we thought it was only open to professional chefs. He was able to sign up for a membership. Membership is required, but it is free. They have a separate room for some gourmet items. Lots of cooking accessories. Some items are very limited, others have a wide selection. For example, the syrups used for Italian soda and shave ice was plentiful with a lot of selection. All the proteins and meats are frozen. They do have a chill zone in which you have an option of wearing one of their coats as it's very cold in there. Inside you have access to a lot of the frozen meats, produce, and cheeses. The produce section has limited fruits and vegetables, but they had a very nice selection of cheeses, which I appreciated.

It is a chef zone here. I love coming here to browse and do some treasure hunting! A lot of items are sold in bulk, but some don't have big portions. They've got meat, produce, lots of frozen seafood choices, household items, you name it. There's also a gourmet chef section in a separate room by the exit of the warehouse so make sure you check it out! Some of the great finds I took home were frozen battered oysters and a 2.2 lb box of already salt-cured ikura (around $80). Now I can enjoy fried oysters whenever I want, and ikura on my rice or salad whenever I want, not at any restaurant's mercy lol. Also I took home some frozen masago as well! I also saw they have frozen coconut shrimp... and I believe I saw a bag of frozen foie gras for $140. Maybe one day I'll get that and just sear it on my pan and I don't have to go to a special restaurant to eat it! Lots of interesting things. I'm thankful for this store allowing me to indulge in my favorite foods at home!

I've continued to visit ChefZone, and it never disappoints! Along with their wide variety of products, l've discovered some hard-to-find ingredients available in bulk, making it a haven for home cooks and professionals alike. Recently, l noticed they've expanded their offerings, which is perfect for experimenting with new recipes. If you haven't visited yet, you're truly missing out on a foodie's paradise!

"TV Dinner" - ZZ Top This place ain't no TV dinner. It's dinner in BULK. Like a 10 lb bag of onion rings, or a 15 lb case of calamari. How about 10 gallons of soy sauce for your next get together? 50 lbs of salt for your next birthday party? How about smaller items like Exotic sauces and syrups for your fancy pants bar? Come here! They have all flavors of Monin syrups, edible flowers, gourmet maple syrup with sparkly edible glitter in them. The Inspired Chef within ChefZone carries gourmet stuff like tomato bobba pearls and lemon caviar and other mouth-feely stuff you can put in people's drinks and sprinkle on top of appetizers. The guy inside Inspired Chef was super nice too, despite us being dressed like hobos with no money (that's my new thing now, haha). Prices are reasonable for all the things in bulk, because that's the idea, you want to buy in bulk and save money. I am STILL waiting on my membership card which they have not mailed me, it's been months. They probably forgot about me or didn't want me back due to the way I was dressed. They don't know good hobo chic when they see it.

They definitely have some speciality ingredients here. It is worth it to check out what they have before paying an arm and a leg elsewhere. Although the prices aren't hands down the best, it is a good store to add to your list of to go's on island. The specials can be killer, so check those out for sure. Also, a great place to visit if you are planning to throw a party.

    Japanese groceries available
    Eri K.

Chef Zone is a really interesting grocery store nearby the airport. Membership is free for residents (ohana) but otherwise it is for chef/restaurant people. Their rules are- bring membership card, the first 2 hours reserved for restaurant members. They have variety of groceries- produce, coffee grinds, syrups, Japanese food, snacks, restaurant wear (chef cost etc), and utensils. The prices can be a bit expensive if you compare with other membership clubs (Costco, Sam's Club), but they have a huge freezer section of meats and produce that is not comparable! Tip: bring a jacket for the cold zone/freezer section....you will need it!

    Liquid smoke

I go here pretty often as we like to stock our fridge with vegetables, eggs, and okinawan sweet potatoes compared to other places because of the quality and price. I also come here because I'm a home cook and making fusion food at home is my hobby. This time, we were here not only to restock on those items but because I purchased a griddle from someone second hand recently, and I was looking to break it in the best way I can. Yesterday was that day the bbq forefathers and ancestors smiled upon me and granted me a window with no rain to make tacos from scratch, tortillas included! Like always, I find what I need and also like always, I discover they have something I didn't know they had until I went looking for it, which is a guava jam like product and big bottles of liquid smoke to give your bbq that extra smoky flavor if you don't have a smoker like me just yet. Though they do not have guava jam in the jelly or jam aisle, they do have a specialty guava nectar similar to it. It's thick and kind of reminded me of tomato paste. Thanks to ChefZone, griddle cooking fresh made corn tortillas and fried pork made taco night a success! No salsa needed as we used a chili pepper water we had from a restaurant we frequent for it!

Cooked white rice, microwaveable, made in Korea. A little over $18/box.

Membership check in is in progress; get your free registration and new card within minutes. Jackets available to borrow for the cold zones. Gorgeous local produce also available. Good variety of bulk paper and service goods, but not quite what we were looking for. Will try this on-the-go microwaveable rice bowl - this one from Korea. (Am seeking a replacement to my originally preferred Shirakiku brand, which has an interesting aroma.). Also love the two gallon resealable bags, now in a flat box, instead of the rectangular pop up box.

This is an interesting store that has takeout containers, disposable utensils, dressings, jams, canned corned beef, salsa, cleaning products, etc. I paid attention to the "Hot Sale" signs for the best prices and great deals. Nadine C suggested to check this place out which I'm so happy I did though the location is in the Lagoon Drive area which we all know the parking situation is tough though they do have a few stalls right in front of the biz many do drive by and double park behind you so if you find a street parking it's totally suggested the best way to avoid getting blocked. The door is to the left of the building and is actually the Will Call area though they do have a lot of shelves to display their inventory which does include cleaning chemicals, food containers, gloves and many items that you just don't see like foam trays. Their clearance section items starts from $0.50 with sale items from $1 finding items for your event doesn't have to be pricey. Thank you!
