Great food. We had burgers, fries and onion rings. All very good and so was the service. This is an old drive in. Don't expect anything more. read more

Was driving from one town to another on business. A colleague grew up here and knew the owner. Simple burger and grill serving the community since, forever it seems. The owner was very friendly and had great stories to tell. Being an old shop, it had the stools at the counter and a few booths. We sat at the counter as all the staff knew my colleague since he was a kid. You don't find jewels like this everywhere. I ordered a double cheese burger, toppings, and tots-crispy. It came out perfect. I spent two minutes devouring the burger, then casually consumed the tots listening to the stories. This place is what America used to be like, yet still has that fire. I hope to pass through here again. Next time maybe the chili dogs. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED read more

Chef's Drive-Inn - a neon sign for a restaurant - Fast Food Near Me - Altavista, Virginia

This was the second time I've been to this nearly 70-year old restaurant for breakfast in the last year. I live 3 hours away now. We chose to sit at the counter to see all the action. I had the biscuits and gravy, home fries (this recognize them as steak fries) and scrambled eggs with coffee. Damn fine coffee. My wife had 2 huge fluffy pancakes and coffee. I greeted every person who came in and they replied back friendly as anything. This place has been doing it right for generations. Do give them a visit. read more

Best breakfast around, the biscuits are amazing and huge! Also the burgers and dogs are top notch

New to the area and trying the local food. Best cheeseburger we've had in a long time! It's a small place with no space for a family of 6 but I suspected a "drive-in" wasn't meant to hold people 50+ years ago. Everything we tried for breakfast and lunch/dinner was great except the onion rings; those were really lacking. We've eaten here several times in the last month and will continue to go back. read more

They might close up at 8 and not be opened every day of the week but if you go to their establishment and try to order around 7:00pm be expected to be ignored or refused service. But don't worry because Dairy Freeze is right down the street, stays open until 10, and will be glad to serve you. read more

best food in the world expecialy ham club with lettuce tomato mayonaise go eat there youll love it

Excellent food, kind service, great value! The double bacon cheeseburger was absolutely delightful.

Stopped here during a road trip for breakfast. Was looking for an old school local flavor diner and that's definitely what this place is. Breakfast options are quite limited but adequate. As you see in the photos it was quite busy on a Saturday morning at 9 am. They also seem to have a robust takeaway service, for as many people that are seated in the photos, there was a similar amount who just swung by for pickup. read more

A great place for a quick and inexpensive dinner with the family. The seating is a little lacking, but the food and friendliness makes up for it! read more

I really wanted to like Chef's, but sadly I don't. The menu is simple diner stuff, with burgers and a few other sandwiches on the menu. There are five or six booths and six or seven stools at the counter. The menu is displayed over the counter. The entire public area is maybe ten by twenty feet. We went for lunch. We ordered at the counter and sat in a booth. The food was brought to us. I had a Carolina-style barbecue sandwich, which was very good, with a vinegary barbecue sauce and cole slaw on the bun, as expected, but at $3.99, I expected at least a plate. It was placed on a piece of waxed paper in front of me on the table. Nothing but the sandwich, no little sprig of parsley or bag of chips. Zip. My partner had the burger and french fries combo. While she seemed to enjoy the fries, I tasted one of the pre-fab little crinkly critters and found them to be pretty greasy and somewhat tasteless. She got a plate, but apparently only to contain the fries from cluttering the table. The burger was generic with nothing n particular to recommend it. A plain uninteresting white-bread bun. The server was a teen aged girl and she was relatively polite, if a bit cool, but the older ladies in the kitchen were very gruff. When we initially asked for a corned beef sandwich, we were informed, in rather stern language that they didn't have it and despite its presence on the apparently easily edited overhead menu board, "nobody can get corned beef." We felt soundly rebuked. It wasn't an apology, it was a dressing-down. Is this any way to run a small town place? With two regular drinks, the bare BBQ sandwich, on a"white-bread" hamburger bun, and the generic burger, the total came to over thirteen dollars. I'd have expected a plate. Not much of a "thanks or goodbye" as we left, either. Maybe it pays to be a regular, and there were a lot of them there. I got the feeling we were spotted as non-regulars and treated as such. There are places like that. I don't suspect that, even tho it's a local place, I'll ever be a "regular". read more

Super delicious Burgers and home fries! And the shakes! I got the banana pudding and it could not have been better. Yes it did have vanilla wafer and banana chunks. They do come out to the car to take your order and deliver your food. Great service and nice people. I do think our waitress was also cooking so you might want to cut them some slack if it takes a while, although our huge order came very quickly. I highly recommend this place‼ Nice to find a place that's doing it right. read more

I can't say anything about the food, because we were never served. We got our drinks and waited and waited and waited. At first our drinks were being refilled then that stopped and the waitress wouldn't make eye contact with us. When everyone, even all the yo go orders that walked in 20-30 minutes after us had been filled we took our kids and left. I am use to racist people, but if you weren't going to serve us you should have just said that! Be blessed and know that we are praying for you all. read more

I love chefs. It has a 50's diner feel that is so unique. Everything is always clean when I arrive. They will also come out to your car and take your order too. Chefs always has fresh food and friendly service. The bacon cheese burger is the best. Fresh beef cooked right in front of you, and it topped with crispy bacon (never chewy or rubbery). They have over 30 hand made milk shakes. Try out my favorite - chocolate peanut butter oreo, yum!! read more

The same situation that happened to Sherica, also occurred with my mom and I. Sat in the car to wait for someone to get take out order. Not only did the waitress come outside numerous times to take the orders of customers that had arrived after us, but wouldn't make eye contact also. So after waiting for about 45 minutes( just to see if she was going to take our order), we left. This so sad that a business in this day act toward people this way, come on now it's 2020!!! read more

Best place to eat in Altavista, Va. Good food, good people, good conversation. I've been coming here since I was a little kid and it's a place that doesn't change with every little fad or movement it's good all American burgers and fries. If you're ever in town or close I strongly recommend stopping in. I havent been in town in months and that was high on my list of to dos, I have relatives that moved out of town years ago that have to go as soon as they're in town, stop in asap. read more

The Fact That I Can Stay In My Car To Order Is Great On Its Own But They Also Have Amazing Food. The Hot Dogs Especially, The Fish Sandwiches, The Onion Rings And The Fries. They're Like The Same As Dairy Freeze Just With More Food. Dairy Freeze Is Mostly Desserts/Ice Cream While Chefs Is Mostly Food. For The Menu You Have To Ask And I Just Wanna Say I Probably Tip The Workers Here More Than Any Other Food Place. I'm giving it a lower rating because of the lack of things on the menu.. the food was pretty good, everything is deep fried and expected the way it comes from a place like this. I got the regular BBQ, wasn't to bad. I think I'll try "the big sexy" next time. read more

Old school burger and hot dog joint. Good food. Service is mediocre. If your looking for a burger fry and sweet tea this is your place. They even have curb side service, no drive thru ( you pull into parking lot and waitress will come get your order and deliver food to vehicle ) Decent pricing for the whole menu.......... I'm rating this a four out of five on that special scale made for little everything-is-fried diners. If I were driving through Altavista again, I'd stop here again. Standard diner fare, and local color. Burger was certainly better than fast food, fries are the fat crinkle cut crispy kind. Hot dog loaded with slaw and chili. Amazing peanutbutter milkshake! Authentic old formica and chrome, and plenty of local fellers in pickup trucks. Um, use the loo BEFORE you come. Remember the go-outside-and-around-the-corner, key-on-a-plywood-keychain bathrooms of old gas stations? Yeah, that kind. Great chuckle: sign on wall in bathroom: "employees must wash hand before returning to work." Hand? Hey, wash them both while you're at it, okay? read more

We love Chef's Drive In. A place where you can still enjoy curb service or eat inside. Love their hamburgers, BBQ's and hot dogs - just like homemade and not those fake burgers you get at chains. Breakfast is good too. Prices are reasonable. Service is okay, not always real friendly or the most attentive but ok. read more

Great old school bacon cheeseburger. Very friendly service. The best breakfast in town.
