Any proper Portuguese bakery must make fresh loaves of sweet bread. Yes, this bakery has the requisite homemade sweet bread (a note: growing up in Rhode Island, where there is a substantial Portuguese population, I had Portuguese sweet bread all the time--try it for French toast--but I have not yet tried Stoughton bakery's). And it has delicious custard tarts, and egg tarts, too. And they have Portuguese fried dough (it has a name in Portuguese, which I can't remember!) which is chewy and sugary, and has a gentle hint of lemon. Yum. It's on a side street very near the Stoughton MBTA station. It's a small and very clean place, with somewhat limited offerings, but everything I have had is the real deal. The woman who works there is a kind and gentle sort, and the prices are super affordable. I will note that it may be around a 3.5, but I rounded it up to 4 stars, as I was very happy to find this!

The patties are as flaky as any you will find in Ocho Rios or Mo' Bay. Bought spinach and also chicken, and especially the chicken was heavenly. Like real Caribbean patties, there's are small and very affordable (and addictive). They are more like a French flaky turnover than the boring frozen patties at the market--just beware of eating any in your car, as the flakes will indeed get everywhere! I also got a couple of pain au chocolat for my neighbors' kids; they were devoured as soon as I handed them to the young boys! So as I shared the savory patties with my adult neighbors, they offered to reimburse me for what they had eaten. When I told them not to worry about it, I explained that the cost for 4 chicken patties, 2 spinach patties, and 2 chocolate croissants came to under $15, including tax! Their jaws dropped. The center of Norwood was closed off to cars today, due to a planned pops concert on a real scorcher, but I feel comforted that before engaging in this carbohydrate overload(!) I got a couple of miles of sunny Sunday walking in, too. All good. As someone who regularly travels to Jamaica for business as well as pleasure, this is truly a blessed and happy place.
