A month or so ago, I attended a fermentation and pickling class taught by Dara Merin right in my…read moreown neighborhood! The class was small - about four or five of us in her roomy kitchen. We went over all the recipes in her handout for fermented veg pickle (like kim chee), sourdough starter (I already killed mine), kombucha (I've got the mother now but not the time or the courage to make the kombucha!)... the class is more demonstration with some hands on prep to make the pickle. Everyone was super nice and I highly recommend Dara's classes. Classes are in the kitchen a 1908 house in the Temescal neighborhood of North Oakland, a ten minute walk from the Rockridge Bart station. Each class is chock-full of cooking instructions, specific methods, and tips and includes a comprehensive handout with recipes and lots of other information and resources. The focus is always on how to make delicious food that is nourishing and nutritious too. Classes all feature a relaxed and comfortable dinner in the lovely dining room after we finish cooking, with abundant food and wine to compliment the meal. This part of the class is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the group and feel the sweet community vibe that makes classes with The Sage Table so special. Cooking is done with the highest quality ingredients possible, adhering to the idea of SOUL food: Seasonal, Organic, Unrefined and Local. As much as possible is purchased at local farmer's markets in the East Bay. Classes are vegetarian unless explicitly noted otherwise.

I have taken 4 cooking classes so far. from The Sage Table…read more The cosmic raw chocolate 101 class was the most exhilarating as we ate and drank amazing dark rich and healthy chocolate all night. It took my current cacao skills to a new level. The fermentation class was excellent. I feel confident fermenting foods and drinks. My partner, having watched me make traditional kombucha, began making his own experiments, so we are a super fermenty household now. The vegetarian soup making class opened my mind and palate up to legumes in a new way, and I have yet to try those recipes. The bones, broths and braising class, taught me how to make chicken soup and beef stew, that could have my Jewish ancestors rolling over in shame. The soups/stews we feasted on at the end of the class were nothing short of off-the-BLEEP-hook fantastic. My belly was in pure bliss. Dara was great about answering all my how to cook meat related questions too. There were a lot of things about meat and cooking meat that I did not know before. As a soup lover I can easily say that these were the best tasting liquid meals that have passed through my taste-buds in a long while. I am dairy-free, gluten-free (except for ghee) and so appreciated that these recipes are not dairy dependent. Thank you Dara, for your amazing culinary expertise.

What a fantastic tour by Mashav (the owner and the chef of Le Couloir)! Richmond neighborhood in SF…read moreis known for its mix of cultures, but Mashav masterfully uncovers all the hidden secrets and gems - Secrets only someone who lives in this community is familiar with. And she does that through food and hand-picked dishes that you will never uncover without a guide. Even though locations may change per tour, our group tasted a mix of cultures and got some stories behind the dishes, the restaurants, and their owners. Few examples - * Russian cuisine - Herring with a pickled onion on fresh bread * Indian street food - I was surprised how much I enjoyed this vegan street snack - I would have never ordered anything without meat, and I dislike spinach, but the fried spinach snack was mind-blowingly good. * Mexican - Quesadilla with plantain. Again, no meat but it was soooooo good. * Chinese - Glazed Pork and pork-filled bun I won't spoil the surprise for some of the other locations. And more, and more - Total of about 7-8 places. You won't stay hungry, guaranteed. The walk itself is not challenging; there are no hills to overcome, even though it's San Francisco. Don't wait - Just go!

I was not happy with my child's experience at Casa Cerrito. We were in a bind because we had just…read moremoved to the area and needed something for her to do before she started kindergarten in the fall, so it was fine as a stop-gap measure. However, the more I saw of this place the less impressed I was. My first impression was not great: the room was cluttered, poky and a bit depressing, and the playground was outdated and small. However, the school's director assured me she was transitioning to the summer session and this was not typical. Honestly I never saw a difference throughout the summer. They did have terrific, creative activities. Every week they went to the Splash Park at the pool, there were many presentations at the rec center, and on-site they had some very cool activities, such as a day studying Norse runes and a performance (done by the kids) of The Lorax. The biggest problem I had was interactions with the kids. Every day my daughter was greeted with "hi princess!" which seemed outdated to me. There was segregation between the boys and girls, which was subtly encouraged: "this is a girl game, the boys are doing this." Kids were allowed to bring toys from home and this further segregated them, because if you didn't have Bey Blades or whatever you weren't in the cool group. My daughter was very lonely and felt like she wasn't included, a fact that was missed by the teachers because they thought she was going off by herself to read by choice. In fact she was making the best of a lonely situation. My daughter continually told me that "bad" boys were told they were "naughty," which upset her and made her reach out to these boys to protect them. This is sweet of her but not a role I want her taking on. I witnessed several instances of shaming behavior of kids who were acting out and I felt terrible for the parents, who were told "he was so bad today," and for the kids, who were treated sternly without positive reinforcement. They seemed to be simply labeled "bad" while my daughter was told "we wish we had a whole class like you," which made her feel uncomfortable and responsible for improving her classmates' situations. Good grief! Everyone seems good-hearted and means well, and I do not think awful things would happen to a kid here, but it's not where I'd choose to send a child. It's more like a day-care than a preschool. The price is great but let the buyer beware.

Where to begin? Casa Cerrito has the feel of a daycare rather than preschool. The room is cluttered…read moreand unkempt looking. The area next to the bathroom continually smells of urine. The disorganization and clutter extends to schedules, notifications, and any relevant written material, which seem to always be late and/or missing or wrong and appear to be written by someone with the grammar of a 10 year old. Everyone from the director to the teachers seems to be totally checked out and apathetic. There is little to no communication from the staff on your child's progress, challenges, etc. The only time you will hear from them is if they had a time out for bad behavior. Homework packets (really for 3-5 year olds?) seem to be of two extremes, either too advanced, requiring letter and number recognition and writing skills or coloring book pages featuring cartoon characters. I was excited to learn that once a week there was a cooking class and then quickly dismayed to see that every week a different version of a boxed cake mix was being made and given to the kids to consume on their way out of class. Reports of time outs being done with the child's nose against the cupboard or wall are true, although apparently they stopped last year after a child complained to their parent! I cannot believe that any teacher trained in the last 25 years in Early Childhood Education would think that was appropriate! Most unfortunate is that this is a City/School District subsidized program and it reflects very poorly on our city and proves that affordable quality childcare is not possible to find. If you would like for your child to be in a stimulating, respectful and engaging environment DO NOT SEND THEM HERE!
