The first Paxton & Whitfield cheese shop was opened in 1797 and is located on Jermyn street just across from Fortnum and masons. They have an excellent variety of quality cheeses including cheeses from the British isles. Their truffle cheese are particularly excellent. Service is very professional and those working at the store are very knowledgeable about the cheeses. While upscale with a traditional ambiance, the store is also fresh and modern. You know that your cheesemonger is serious when they can tell you the names of some of the farmers that raised the animals that made the cheese that you're eating. Along with that, the selection is absolutely incredible. It is worth going in just to learn about the different types of cheeses, most of which come from the British Isles. The lovely lady in the shop couldn't help me but she did come up with some suggestions for alternative cheeses and we had fun sampling a few different ones. I walked away with an aged Italian cheese, nothing like what I went in to the shop looking for but it was so luscious I couldn't say no. I also found in the shop, (a HUGE surprise!) two Spanish sauces that I had discovered on holiday and have been searching in England for ever since. So I wasn't able to find my Mexican cheese, but I was happily reunited with two wonderful sauces. Happy days!

They have also recently started up a 'Cheese Club' membership where members receive a seasonal selection of farmhouse cheeses either monthly or bi-monthly. We are massive fans of the goat's milk gouda and Villarejo manchego, as well as the bagels that Mike, the owner, picks up from the Bagel Shop on Brick Lane each morning.

This is a great little independent cheese shop somewhat hidden away in Liverpool Street Station…read more The shop - as its name says - stocks a wide variety of cheeses from around the world (well, mainly Europe), with cheeses from France, Switzerland and Italy being particularly well-represented. I once found Džiugas, a cheese from Lithuania, here, though have not seen it recently, and was really pleased because, well, it's very tasty, and it saved me from having to fly to Vilnius just to get a taste of it once more. In addition to cheeses, this shop also stocks chutneys, cake mixes, biscuits, jams and sandwiches. The sandwiches do seem to be priced quite reasonably, and when I popped in one evening, were going for buy two for the price of one. I haven't tried them myself as I don't quite like their range of breads (white sandwich bread and baps). Staff are nice and friendly and happy to look for and suggest cheeses in accordance to your needs. International Cheese also offer cheese hampers, boxes and wedding cakes, so it's a great place to pop into for gifts as well.

With the exception of a token turkey sandwich they all include cheese. And of course it's not just cheese, but specified types of cheese, whether cheddar, brie or soft, in ploughman's, with chutney, with ham etc. All fresh cut and simply wrapped in clingfilm. Prices start under £3, so very competitive too.
