Amazing food. You'll be thinking about that sandwich for days. The staff are extremely kind and helpful in explaining the menu and offering suggestions. 10/10 will be back

Staff was so so friendly and the grilled cheeses were excellent! I'll definitely come back!

Cheese Louise has a new outpost in Portsmouth NH, and we gave it a try for lunch the other day. The concept is grilled cheese, some interesting sides, and to my surprise, cocktails! This is a small space and seems very popular. It's a fast casual setup where you order at the counter and then the food is brought to the table. Like many places these days, they are understaffed and so it took some time for our order to be placed and for the food to arrive. but the staff we interacted with were super friendly and apologized for the delay. It seems some were turned off by the line and we saw people leaving rather than waiting. I tried the "Baconator" grilled cheese with tomato soup on the side. My sandwich was good, especially for the price point, but not the best grilled cheese I've had. I think mine are better! :-) On the positive side, the bread was tasty and toasted to perfection, there was nice bacon flavor, but I wasn't overwhelmed with cheese. There was not much cheese, did not have any stringy pull, and I didn't get any delicious butter flavor on the bread. It's a funny thing to get the perfect balance of cheese to bread. Sometimes the simplest of dishes/foods are hard to get right! Tomato soup is one of those things that is very personal. Some lean toward the can of Campbells soup, which are salty but have their place. Others are high end gourmet but don't taste like tomato soup. The version here was perhaps somewhere in the middle. For me, I would have preferred a lighter version to pair with grilled cheese, but you will have to try for yourself and see what you think. I'll have to come back and try this place again. Don't forget to checkin via Yelp, as you may get a surprise!

My Baconator was very ordinary and $11. The sandwich was big enough to be a snack for 2, but too small for a full dinner for one. The cheese was fine but the bacon was rubbery, kind of like what you get at the Holiday Inn Express breakfast buffet. They were a bit cheap on the cheese as well, it was mostly bread! There was nothing special about this sandwich other than it would hit the spot after having a few cocktails at a local bar. However, they close quite early and Gilly's is way more satisfying. They have a secret sauce intended for the chips. Instead, I dipped the grilled cheese into it, not too bad. Service was excellent!

This place does great business here in Portsmouth. Be sure to check in with Yelp! The have a grilled cheese daily special each day for those of you who like to mix things up from the regular menu. Today's special was a macaroni and cheese stuffed grilled cheese, which didn't appeal to me until I tried the side of mac and cheese! We were a party of six on a Saturday afternoon during the lunch rush. I had the Nashville Hot Chicken grilled cheese with a side of pickles, chips, and the threw in the tomato soup...Thank you! I ordered the Nashville Hot chicken grilled cheese with extra spice. Although the sandwich was very tasty, it wasn't spicy. The spice needs to be kicked up a couple notches. The pickles were homemade and very good! The chips were perfect with the side of sauce that they give you and the tomato soup was fantastic. Everyone left with a full stomach with no complaints. We were all very happy that we stopped in for lunch on our walk through Portsmouth.

Special grilled cheese of the week: BBQ chicken with pickled red onions and gruyère
    Marni M.

Stopped by here sporadically as we needed a quick bite to eat before making a drive back to Massachusetts. Street parking was slightly difficult as most the meters were taken on a Monday just after noon. We were greeted by the friendly staff who also offered the special grilled cheese of the week which was a BBQ chicken with pickled red onions and gruyère cheese. After reviewing all the options, I decided for the special of the week which came with a side of what appeared to be homemade chips. Everything about it was perfect in terms of the sourdough bread being beautifully toasted, the cheese well melted, pieces of the BBQ chicken and the brimey pickled onions which cut through the greasiness of the sandwich. What made it even better was the homemade sauce which tasted like a mixture of BBQ, ketchup, and mayonnaise. Overall, I had a perfect experience with good food, service, and a fun environment. I would come again and try more from their menu unless the special of the week catches my attention again. There appeared to be a good variety of lemonades and juices to pick from as well. Highly recommend others to check them out.

What I enjoyed about Cheese Louise is their dedication. Like If you're gonna do comfort food such as grilled cheese and tomato soup and iced tea, do it well. The idea is that we wanted to find something simple for my daughter to eat because she loves grilled cheese. I think that's an easy motivation to follow. The ambience is casual, but it's definitely got a vibe. I think the best description is "chewy gooey". If I were camping in this truck popped up next to us I would call it the best camping food I ever ate in my life and that sort of matches the vibe in there. They have delicious iced tea, sweetened with honey. They also have house made potato chips, which are delicious. You have to dip your grilled cheese into your tomato soup, also a great menu item. I suggest setting aside more time than you expect and enjoying some adult beverages while playing one of the many board games they have to play. This place is also affordable and I would suggested it to anyone who likes grilled cheese. I think that's a lot of people.

The restaurant was clean and had space to sit. You order at the counter and can take out or eat there. I ordered a meal with the baconator, tomato soup and maple lemonade. Food came out quickly and the service was easy, just order at the counter. The baconator was good--melted and lots of bacon. Tomato soup was nice and hearty. It was good to eat together. The maple lemonade was also good. The maple made it less tart. The price was a little high for what you get. Almost wish my sandwich had more cheese .

I decided to make a reservation to take advantage of their special promotion during Restaurant Week. I made a reservation through Open Table and our table was ready when we arrived. Place is small but tables are well spaced to allow for privacy. We were presented with their restaurant week menu as well as a limited regular menu for add-ons. Our order was taken in a timely manner and with a smile. I started with the coconut carrot ginger soup for my starter. I added a grilled bread basket with butter as it is not included with your meal and I like bread with my soup. The soup was a decent soup and the bread was slight charred in places. As for my main course, I went with the braised short ribs served with polenta and roasted root vegetables. The red wine demi glace was good and the root vegetables were inconsistently roasted as some were a little too hard and some mushy. Short ribs were not consistently seasoned as I got salty in some bites and well seasoned in others. I was disappointed that my short ribs were stringy as well and that was not what I expected. The dessert was an apple tart. The shell was somewhat hard and difficult to cut into with the spoon provided. Flavors were good. My overall experience was that it was just ok but nothing stood out to me as out of the ordinary or special about it. So go if you want to and maybe your experience will be better than mine.

It's a great addition, the atmosphere is lively and youthful, and it would be good for groups (just note they don't take reservations yet). The ramen was delicious, with a rich, flavorful broth. They give you a generous amount of noodles and pork belly, enough to feel satisfied without being overwhelming. While I wouldn't come here solely for the yakitori due to the price, the ramen is absolutely worth the $20. What would have made this a five-star experience are a couple small details: The cabbage salad (Kyabetsu) would benefit from being shredded more traditionally- the larger pieces were a bit bitter and less enjoyable. Also, please please PLEASEE cut the egg in half before adding it to the ramen!!! Trying to break it into bite-sized pieces with chopsticks is awkward. It's the little things that really elevate the experience. All in all, I'd highly recommend this spot on a cold winter night. Hoping you're around for a long time!

However, in the same breath I too, understand the urge to be unique myself. I didn't want to appear alike to the rest of the target demographic of this place where XTRA L SPICE is the equivalent of munching on a jalapeño with no seeds and got put through the washer. So, I showed up with 4 other friends, with one specifically white so we- as a group- wouldn't get hitman'd. I'd like to think it worked because we all had a safe walk to the place. For real though, I ordered the Lost In Koshi drink, spicy Gyoza small plate, the pork skewers, and the black garlic ramen bowl. The Koshi drink sucked. It was giving soil(ed), gardener-tasted-dirt-from-going-down-on-mother-earth realness. Mostly from how poorly the Matcha tasted with the Roku Gin and the citrus mixer together. The gin itself sat entirely on the top of the drink, so I spent a good 3 minutes thinking I was safe just sipping nonchalantly, and then WA-BAM! An expired sharpie was the only flavor profile in that moment. I'm going to pair the spicy Gyoza and pork skewers together here, mostly because there WASN'T A LOT to begin with! Six steamed dumplings with minimal meat, served with a rationed amount of chili. The same chili you can get in a massive bottle at a local Asian super-mart... is how they determined this dish was spicy. If you made it this far and wanted to know how it tasted, just yoink a Big Mac from someone at a drive through, take the patty, and power-wash it like your life depends on it. As for the pork skewers... pork skewers..? What pork skewers..? And finally, the payoff that I was begging for the entire time.. the black garlic ramen bowl. Highlighted in scarlet red on the menu, bragging about it's 8 hour slow cooked broth.. and whatever else it said. I honestly forgot. The ramen bowl was delicious, I could not get enough. The noodles were soft but firm, you could tell they were hand made. You get served an egg with a gooey yolk, giving the entire thing a sweet break from the savory-ness of the meat and broth. I finished the entire thing, broth included. All for $20.. The pork skewers, AND gyoza both costed $20, and those two together? Quite literally a ripoff. You'll get two toothpicks for skewers, and six count of dumplings. BOOO !!!! If you go here, save yourselves 40 minutes by not ordering any small plates or skewers, because you'll be waiting that time for the check.

I got the Lamb on the menu and my friend got the halibut I think (I'm not a fish eater so I can't remember if he got the halibut or the trout). Positives: the lamb was exceptional. Very well cooked, perfectly seasoned, paired REALLY nicely with my hard cider. And the polenta with it was divine, quite possibly the best creamy polenta I've ever had. Negatives: the mustard greens were not very good. Very very salty and difficult to get through. And for the prices, the portions were fairly small. Neutral: the menu itself is very small. I love visiting restaurants all over and I'm usually pretty up to date on most verbiage you see in a menu. But I was pretty rusty on this one; a fair amount of terms I was unfamiliar with.
