The Northcote Bakeshop is a cute little bakery on High Street, where there's not much around, but is totally worth the trip there just on it's own. They cater for both the savoury and sweet tooth. I had a vegan empanada today which was made up of tomatoes, pumpkin, corn and olives. Just delightful. They also have a whole range of gluten free options as well. Best thing is it's all baked locally in Northcote. Definitely worth a stop if you're ever up that way.

Came here for a Good Beer Week event with Sixpoints Brewery and had a dreamy time. (Sixpoints Brews at 5 Point Deli! I just got that.) The special was a Sixpoint brew accompanied by a jerk chicken burger for $20. How could I resist? The burger was so good, the chicken wasn't overcooked and was jerk seasoned to juicy perfection. Their appetizer of fried chicken tenders was so yummy, and came with a cheesy biscuit and cracked pepper white gravy. This was my first time seeing southern-style gravy at a restaurant in Australia, so obviously, I was stoked, that biscuit and gravy combo took me straight back home, and I loved it. I already prefer this venue over Le Bon Ton. Not too compare siblings or anything, because Le Bon Ton has a lot to offer, but I thought this menu was more intriguing. Love the setting, it's not dark and voodoo-ish, like Le Bon Ton. There's a sunroof portion letting in natural light, with wood everything. Staff was hands down, amazing. Every single host/waiter/waitress/manager was friendly and so welcoming. Seriously, even the barman greeted us with hello. Having had the smoked meat poutine at upstairs Longhorn, it took me a fair amount of restraint not to get this (it's listed as a side but is a meal in its own unless you have enough people to share!) ...but I was here to try the sandwiches. Thankfully I brought along my partner in crime so we could go splitsies on two. We ordered the "world famous smoked pastrami" and the turkey club. Which they could also get away with calling "best club sandwich in town". Both were huge (not side-splitting ridiculous) sandwiches, served with a mound of seasoned crisps and a pickle. Come hungry though. Both were so delicious. The turkey club was my personal favourite and shouldn't be overlooked in all the excitement over the pastrami. The pastrami is thick, smokey and not like any other I've had in Melbourne. Thicker than what they use on the poutine. I love pickles, but must admit I throw a lot away when people try to offer them up at American style places. Not here though, they are perfect. I ate both of them. They also offer an All You Can Eat Buffet Breakfast here. The coffee is superb - with ever changing options of single origin blends to choose from, as well as the usual house blends that most cafes have, which are always extremely tasty. Their menu is on the unique and very very yummy side of the cafe spectrum. And their many baked goods are all superbly crafted. In fact there is little that the Red Door Corner Store doesn't do well. Their staff are all knowledgeable, friendly, happy and attentive. And they sell a range of home made jams, conserves, chutneys and sauces that you can buy to take home with you. They also sell take-away freshly baked bread, if you are still feeling a little peckish are a veritable feast of Corner Store delights. I really can't recommend this place enough. I even like the fact that it is situated in a back streets of Northcote - not another shop in sight.

As with most vegan stores, it's pricey and something of a luxury, but a nice one to have. I would not, however, suggest that any non-Australian try anything with vegemite.
