Outback Koalas...back on the road... Paninoteca 130 Gaffney St. Coburg
Driving around the streets of Melbourne delivering our increasingly popular magnesium chloride we are always on the lookout for a place to refuel with food and coffee. Delighted we were to stumble across the newly opened Paninoteca in Gaffney St. Whilst the usual suspects of Italian salumeria and panini grace the menu so do some other interesting combinations not often found in your typical suburban cafe such as grilled kangaroo loin.
What impressed most was the interesting way the food is served. A typical antipasto is presented in a paper cone making it look more like a gelato than cold meats on a plate with wafers being substituted with crostini. If you are feeling only slightly peckish you can order half a "panino" not a bad move as you want to make sure you have room for the home made cannolo, which is sublime.
To reinforce that this is a paninoteca all the "panini" are branded with the Paninoteca logo. Today to satisfy our Abruzzese heritage we sampled the porchetta with crackle and roasted fennel which proved to rival any porchetta panino served in Abruzzo.
Apart from the panini being good so is the coffee which I discovered on my return to be the new buzz brand, "Where's Marcel" Gluten free customers are catered for, just ask and if you prefer almond milk it's available too.
Though small in appearance with seating both inside and out there is ample room to enjoy your food and coffee. Having said this judging by the queues of people ordering I daresay that the need to expand their premises will be imminent. Don't be scared off though by the hoards of people clambering for food while you wait for your "panino" challenge someone to futsal, flick through the Italian "fumetti' lined up against the wall or do what I saw two young handsome men in suits doing, playing a game of Italian cards, before you know it your food has arrived all too quickly. The 9.00pm Friday and Saturday nights closing times finally give you somewhere local and familiar to meet up with friends on the weekend without having to travel too far from home.
I wonder if for our next delivery they will let us use the iconic Fiat out the front, the suitcases on the back seat would be perfect for putting our magnesium chloride in.
