Acklam Village Market is a street food market with some of the best street food in one place that I have ever seen. Not only do they have great food, there is a bar with a decent amount of seating. Like I said, we were there on a Saturday so the place was packed. I would definitely recommend arriving early and sharing with friends from a couple of the vendors. You are going to want to try everything and are going to have a very difficult time deciding what you want. We ultimately decided to split shawarma but it was so big we were too full to get anything else unfortunately. The fenced-off section is open at weekends only, but there are always some stalls to be found on Fridays too alongside the orange van selling proper Italian coffee from his VW camper. The selection ranges from more predictable Thai and Indian buffets to wraps from Venezuela or Jamaica. My favourites are the rice dishes from Afghanistan or Iran - delicious home cooking from countries I will probably never visit - and amongst the few not relying on deep frying. I've only ever had their tofu bahn mi but that's because it's so heavenly that I'm too scared to try something different. The tofu is cooked in some sort of incredible sauce and the baguette is toasted. It's £6.50 and worth every penny. We've started to make a tradition to get it on Saturday morning.

Having been treated to homemade arepas at a Venezuelan friend's home, I suppose I could never say…read morethat these are the best arepas. But they are really wonderful arpeas. What are arepas? They are the venezuelan equivalent of a pita filled with falafel. Instead of a pita, you have a warm, freshly-cooked bread (made out of cornflour) and you hollow out the inside (like a pita) to make room for the filling. You fill with meat, cheese, and avocado sauce (no, it's not guacamole). After trying both, the ones with beef are my favorite, though chicken is very good as well. It's delicious and makes a filling and enjoyable meal as you finish your stroll up Portobello Road and make a detour through Acklam Village. Gluten free notes: arepas are made out of cornflour, so they are naturally gluten free.

I sat down at one of the 5 chairs and placed an order for a meatball tajine. Unfortunately, they were out of that already and so I went with the chicken tajine instead. That was lovely as well. They serve it with French bread on the side, so that you can soak up all the juices in the pan. The couple sitting next to me was eating a lentil soup and lentil soup being one of my favourite hearty dishes, I figured I should try one as well. I opted for the small portion (at £2.50), which wasn't actually small at all, but rather a big plate (see image). The soup needed a bit of flavouring, which was quickly done by adding a bit of the hot sauce they provide on the counter. At last, I ordered a freshly-brewed and heavenly-sweetened mint tea...that was a delicious finish to an unexpectedly fun lunch. Needless to say, I'm now a big fan of Eat First!
