My son is 10 years old now. After he received his black belt in taekwondo, I decided its time that he goes back to jiu jitsu. And when I made that decision, there was no other school I had in mind but Robynho's. After almost a year of coming back and training, my son feels at home with this place, as if he never left. Ive enrolled my child into different classes, from music to swimming and everything else in between. What I can tell you is that no other activity can teach your child tenacity, grit and courage than martial arts. If you want your kids to be confident and humble at the same time, take him or her to a jiujitsu school, and I cant think of a better place than this one.

I started with Checkmat Buena Park in late January or early February of 2018 after moving locally to the area. I visited many gyms in the area and was looking for specific criteria and schedule that fit my needs and goals with a hectic schedule like mine. Many places, the owners were never on site teaching the classes or if they were, would shrug me off. I walked in Checkmat and met owner and head coach, Robynho. He always has a big smile on his face and greeted me. I've done BJJ in the past when I was younger, but its still a little nerve racking and daunting trying to gauge personalities and the pecking order of any BJJ gym. Not so much for Checkmat. It really is like a big family. Egos are hardly existent. I was welcomed in and found my place. Checkmat Buena Park offers morning and night classes almost 7 days a week (except for Friday mornings are at Headquarters in Signal Hill) and Sunday's (although there is a nogi club that's starting to pick up and taught by an awesome coach named Ronnie Holmes.). There are amazing assistant coaches (Black Belts) that truly have a ton of experience in BJJ and are always willing to help and show techniques to better your game. Practices are regimented by a conditioning warmup, drilling, and live rolling. Checkmat is one of the top competition teams in the world. If competition is your goal, look no further. If it's not your thing, you're still receiving amazing world class training to fulfill your self-defense and fitness lifestyle. Pricing is very affordable compared to other gyms in the area and an unbeatable schedule. You're not required to buy the gym's equipment or uniform like other places. Only thing that is asked is if you decide to stay with Checkmat Buena Park, is to take pride in where you train and wear the gym patch.

Great instructors and great people. The gym is very clean and as mentioned, very family oriented! Everyone is willing to help one another. It's a great place to train for adults as well as kids!

    My son enjoys this school!

The progression I underwent the first two months training with Professor Victor exceeded the eight months of training at the previous gym I trained at. Along with Professor Victor, you'll find Professor Carl and Professor Ivan to add to the vast knowledge and myriad of techniques. Whether you're looking to be a serious competitor or a hobbyist in jiu jitsu, I highly recommend training at Candal's Martial Arts & Brazilian Jui Jitsu!

This place probably needs a new Yelp page because it's under different ownership…read more Got my 7-year old son enrolled here about 3 months ago because I got tired of him playing video games and goofing off all the time. He also has trouble focusing at school and home, so wanted to give him something to keep busy. I wasn't looking to make him the next MMA champion or anything crazy. I just wanted him to learn to throw a punch and be able to defend himself, while also keeping him active. This place seems to be doing a good job with all of those. My son loves coming here and enjoys working out with other students. Coach David and Kru Stephanie are excellent with the students and seem to know how to tap into their potential. I like that they sometimes turn some training sessions into games to keep kids more engaged. All the students are nice too. I've been to some martial arts studios where some of the students act like thugs. I haven't seen seen any bad characters here. Kids/teens Muay Thai classes are held Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (sparring), and Saturday. Adult classes are held Monday thru Saturday. If you sign up here you can also take Taekwondo at Ferrer Academy, located on Lincoln Avenue near Moody Street. Such a small world because I used to train there over 30 years ago. Turns out the owner of this studio is the daughter of my former instructor. Tuition can be paid month-to-month or you can sign a 6-month or annual contract. Price is obviously better with longer contracts. Not sure if it's still offered but we were given a 2-week free trial period when we first signed up.

The instructors were always very patient, helpful and aware of all the kids. The overall vibe of this place was, and is still is amazing. She always felt part of the family and specially enjoyed kids fun nights. Every now and then, they had fun activities for the kids with jumpers and music which I thought was amazing and it gave the kids the opportunity to get to know each other better. After taking a one year break and as of today my daughter and I have re enrolled in the muay thai classes and we both can't wait to get started! Coach Johnson has always being extremely helpful and I appreciate that very much. It is people like him that go the extra mile to help someone better themselves and give us that extra push we ALL sometimes need. I highly recommend All In MMA for kids and adults, and I look forward to the epic trainings

Coach Edwin is a highly-qualified black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu who truly cares about the art,…read moreas well as the progression of his students. I trained with Edwin for more than a year, and 100% still would be if I lived in the area. Before starting, I watched a little UFC, and had heard of BJJ but I had zero experience in practicing combat sports, and really didn't have a clue what BJJ was. Now I'm all in, two comps deep, and am eager to train whenever I can - I really don't think that would be the case if Edwin's classes weren't so engaging, and if the environment wasn't so welcoming (even the other students go out of their way to help make their training partner better each session). Coach Edwin concentrates on the fundamentals and builds a foundation for his students, no matter what level they are. It's apparent that he has experience teaching, and uses that to his advantage when coaching. He understands the fine details of each technique that he's teaching, and can explain how you can improve in any given position by applying small adjustments to your game. When he starts explaining a guard, movement, take-down, submission, etc., the entire class is dialed into whatever he's saying. He's not one of those guys who will scoff at you for asking a question, or look down on you for not knowing something. He actually encourages you to ask questions, especially if you are a white belt. If you're considering starting BJJ or if you're looking for a new place to train, I would highly recommend the Grappling Lab. Your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, confidence, and cardio will thank you!

I don't think I knew that when I first started working with Edwin, but I discovered it during our time training together. I was a lousy student, perhaps I still am. But even after all these years he hasn't given up on me. Still sees a fighter worth training. I think that's incredible. Give his class try and know that even if you leave one day for what ever reason; money, time, or life, that crazy son of a gun will still welcome you back each and every time. No shame, just sweat and smiles. Good luck warriors and have fun. [Wrote this review in google maps first, but I believe in this gym enough to post it here too.]
