In the end, Cheap Rent A Car was the clear winner! I was hesitant at first because some of the reviews had really bad economy cars, but I took a chance and set my expectations really low. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just a car to get me around the island. Richard is the owner, and was quick with responses. To get a quote, simply fill out the questionnaire and Richard will get back to you quickly, same day or next business day. You can also call and he can give you a quote quickly. I am 24, turning 25 in May, so a lot of the other places were up-charging significantly for the young rider fee. Although I did not get the breakout of the underage fee, the inclusive price was still better than every other competitor. My questionnaire: 19 day economy rental, during peak season (mid-Dec to early Jan). Total: ~$600 (including young driver fee) Pros: -Best price on Oahu, after a lot of research -Lowest young driver fee -Quick responses -Ended up getting a 2012 2-door Kia Forte (had AC) -Right across the street from where I was staying (huge plus) -Relatively clean car inside Cons: -Car did have some issues -Quite a few visual bumps, scratches, and dents -Power steering needs to get checked since it was tough to move the wheel and stalled a bit -Noticed the right brake light went out a day before I was going to return (had I noticed earlier, I would have went in to get a new car) -AC vent could not adjust on the passenger side Overall experience was great. Surprised to find my usual rental car place-Enterprise on Ala Moana Blvd was not open. Conveniently located behind McKinley Car Wash, hassle free to get a car, inexpensive and genuinely friendly service. Richard the owner answered the phone every time I called, and I had no trouble extending the lease as needed. He's been in business for 15 years in this location and has clean cars at competitive rates. Highly recommend! I was nervous when all the airport rental car places were booked but this one had good reviews so I called and booked it. So glad I did! Getting a cab from the airport was easy. Our flight was 2hrs late but the owner didn't mind at all and waited for us to get there. I called as soon as we landed and he was so nice telling us not to worry. We got a awesome white convertible which is exactly what we wanted for our Hawaiian honeymoon. It was about $150/day including taxes & fees. Car was fine and rates were good but customer service was awful. Employee specifically said the car was "a little below a half tank" (because of the last renters I guess) and it showed so when we picked up the car. Dropped it off with a little below a half tank and the employee proceeded to get in an argument with me over he said she said. I walked away and then the employee heard me talking to my friend about the dishonesty (or confusion if I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt) and he came back to argue with me more. Renting a car from a local Hawaiian company is the way to go. Richard is very professional and easy to deal with. We walked to his shop from our hotel in Waikiki and the process was simple. A little disappointing. I emailed about rates the end of February and he gave me some good rates. Not renting until October so there was no hurry and he didn't say the quote was a 1 time offer. I emailed a few questions over the next couple of weeks then called to book. The rate was now $700 more for the month. If I had known he wouldn't stand by the quote I would have reserved at that time then cancelled if needed. Didn't want to do that as I know he is a small businesses and I hate to cancel on them. And yea, I know if I use a big agency I have to book when I get the quote but didn't think that was the case with this local company. Quotes and estimates are usually good for a period of time. He lost a customer that would have rented for 31 days and put very little mileage on the car. I am now booked with a a large agency. Also I was UNDER 25 yrs old. Total for 2 days w/o insurance came to be $83 for an economy car( 92k miles), so 1 day would be something like $41. Now, the car. It was clean from inside, the there was a hole in my driver seat. Outside of car had couple scratches n dents, and few minor wears. Everything was noted in the vehicle inspection. Guy was nice enough ti make everything quick. From coming in to driving the car, took me like 20 min. Honesty. This places is the cheapest around n they're nice. Every time I come to Oahu for a short visit Richard the owner gets me angrst car for a great price! I can even call him on the same day and get an awesome car. I almost didn't want to write a review because I did want others to know about this hidden treasure. Never have to wait in a line. And he always get me right in and out with a car. My boyfriend and I literally waited the day OF to rent a car. We started asking for rates on Monday 11 am. Stupid--I know, but we were lazy and didn't think this through. There was also a convention going on and I'm sure every other tourist was ready to rent a car and drive around Oahu. We called literally EVERY major car rental company (Avis, Enterprise, etc.) and found that they had all their cars rented out OR were charging 3x the usual rate for desperate people like us. Avis wanted to charge us $150 + tax for a jeep, the fuhhhh. We spent a good 20 minutes calling each place and I looked on Yelp to see what were our other options. I saw Cheap Rent A Car on Yelp and decided to give them a call. They gave us a cheap rate of $67 with additional tax. I was definitely skeptical of this place, but we had no other choice. Even our local uber driver expressed his skepticism and told us to be careful hahaha. When we arrived, we found the place in an alley, similar to a car dealership, but they rent out a bulk of their cars. We definitely got lucky. A young family of 4 was returning their car at the exact time and we were able to take their 2006 Toyota Camry. The guy told us that the returning car was even cheaper--it was $57. It only took a 10 minutes-wait for them to vacuum the car and we took it! My bf was nervous about driving the car, but I pointed out that if a family of 4 with two babies came back unscathed and alive, we would be okay too. They have a flexible return policy. We just had to return it by next day 12 noon or return it at night; Sam just parked it outside and flung the keys inside the shed. Easy peasy. I must admit, they don't have the best cars; they're a little banged up and old, but they do the job well. If you're on a budget and you don't need to be zipping down the road in a shiny new BMW, this is the place for you. Cost $718 to rent a 2009 Honda Civic with 70,000 miles on it. Car is what you'd expect from a 10 year old rental on an island. Richard set me up. You have to pay everything upfront unlike other places that charge you when you return. Under $800 for a rental car that I had for 40 days. The car was a bit beat up from the out side with a couple dings on it but she ran fine. It's wasn't a looker but she never left me stranded & the price was very right for Honolulu. The customer service was very nice. The guy who helped us out was friendly & helpful. The only annoying thing about them is that you have to pay for the whole time upfront (that's no big deal) but if you return the car earlier than you rented it for, you do not get a refund. I was a little hesitant at first because there wasn't a website and only a phone number. Then after I called they were very friendly on the phone. I asked for rates and got a quote. I confirmed it over the phone and asked for an email confirmation and they said oh we just use your phone number as your confirmation.
