The chicken cashew nuts salaad is awesome! Reminds me of back home. The Thai soup was good as well, not as thick as you may get back in Bangladesh however, this is the closest (taste wise). A nice small cozy restaurant with nice ambiance. We have been to this place several times over past few month and enjoyed the authentic Bangladeshi food every time along with their wonderful service. They have quite a nice selection of traditional Bangladeshi meals, including breakfast platter. Some items may be quite spicy hot for guests not used to too spicy foods. We were very excited to try out this Bangladeshi place. The ambience was nice, and price was reasonable. The portion sizes were generous, and we certainly ordered way more food than was necessary or reasonable, for a table of 5. The items we ordered, and their individual reviews are below. Some items were part of a platter, but are individually reviewed. We were given a plate of complementary papads at the beginning, which were tasty, and overall a nice touch to the service. Borhani (4.5/5): Refreshing, tasty, and the rather unconventional addition of green chili paste gave it an extra kick. Kabab (3.5/5): A take on the shami kabab. Was fresh and tasty, but a little dry for my liking. Lebu patar dal (3.5/5): Tasty and flavorful. But it could have been a little thicker. Bhorta platter (2/5): This was what we were most excited about, and it was seriously disappointing. The platter had begun, tomato, and chingri bhortas. The chingri bhorta was below average, and the other two were just bad. The platter did come with a aloo begun bhaja, which was decent. Shorshe Ilish (4/5): The fish was fresh, of good quality and had egg, which I love. The piece size was good, but it was the one right after the head (colloquially called "gharar maach") which meant there were more bones than normal. For the price, I would have expected a better piece. The gravy was good, but nothing spectacular. Kala bhuna (5/5): The best dish we had. Simply spectacular. I wish we did not get some of the other dishes and got more of this instead. Haansh bhuna (3.5/5): It was average. The duck pieces were a bit tough, and the dish itself was quite boring. Chingri bhuna (2/5): Calling this bhuna is just wrong! Very below average dish. Loti chingri (1/5): This was a different version than the one I grew up eating and loved (a dry version). However, I have eaten the gravy version before, like this one, and this was quite bad in comparison. Absolutely flavorless. Rice (3.5/5): The rice was of decent quality, and was cooked well. Pulao (4/5): The pulao was simple but tasty. Went well with some of the spicy dishes. Could have used a bit more ghee in my opinion, instead of the abundant oil that was used. Service (5/5): Very courteous staff. Even though there were only two people, they were very attentive and friendly. Price (4.5/5): Very reasonable for the quantity and the options. It's really great to have a restaurant so trendy cater to the Bangladeshi culture. I was super impressed with the ambiance of the location, the creativity on the menu and of course the food. We tried a lot of the items and were especially excited about the appetizers, drinks and desserts. Please try the paan kulfi, it's to die for! For the main course we had "biye bari khawa for 2" which was essentially kaachi biryani. The biryani wasn't the absolute best but still good. The portions were huge. Been in this city for over over 20 years and coming from a Bengali Background. I can finally say that there is a restaurant of high standards. Ambiance-staff and easy to read menu. These guys know what they are doing! The fuchka was good- but at $7 a plate and a hit Bengali snack. I feel it is a pricey but delicious and so we ordered like 3 plates regardless. I feel for 6 pieces the price is a bit overboard but meh- if they can do it and get away with it. Why not! I will probably still end up getting it when I go back. It was delicious but beware of the green chili's they are spicy. I loved it! I also tried their Goan green drink- which complimented the fuchka as a starter perfectly. It tasted like the Indian version of a mojito but full of spice and a mango infusion as well. I had the pleasure of trying 3 dishes as well-we got both variations of the Letka Khichuri (Bengali risotto). The lamb shank was roasted well and had a sweet and spicy sauce to accompany it. It was fall of the bone and considering it was only $15- GREAT VALUE! The Achari beef was really tasty as well but it got completely over shadowed by the lamb. Also got the roast chicken pulao- and the fragrance of that dish was magical. The chicken was nice and juicy and definitely not overcooked and dried out.Served with a nice tangy salad as well. Finally a restaurant that does justice to Bangladeshi fusion food. The interior is tastefully done, and service is also very good. We had reservation for a group of three on a Thursday evening. The restaurant was very easy to reach, and we were seated immediately. The menu is not very long, but every item on it is solid. Or should I say, every item we tried were solid. For appetizer, we got the Chawk platter, which was really good. For main we had the Duck bhuna, Sea Brim, and Lamb Risotto. Each of the mains stood out on their own. The portion size is adequate, and the presentation is also tasteful. Finally, for dessert we got the paan kulfi, and I have to tell you, it is a must try. We really enjoyed the whole experience and would definitely return. I have heard good things about their Ramadan Iftaar specials. Cannot wait to try it out. P.S This is my pet peeve, and probably irrelevant, but I check the cutlery and dishes used in restaurants that I dine in. This restaurant truly blew me away. I went with my wife, and we both enjoyed everything. The ambience was really nice, great vibes, great music. We tried a bunch of stuff from the menu. But what impressed me the most were their house made drinks! For Appetizers, we tried the Phuchka and Bihari Sliders, simply mind-blowing! For our mains I had the Chawk's Rissoto. It was probably one of the tenderest Lamb Shanks i've had. It comes with their signature pickle and an eggs fritata. A hearty portion for the price. My wife tried Duck 420, and we've already decided to bring both of our parents to Chawk Bazar to make them try out the Duck. It's the perfect amount of flavor and spice. We were sad to hear they were out their nihari, as I've heard great things about it. So we will definitely go back to try that. I highly recommend this place. Giving it a 10/10. Growing up in a Bangladeshi family, I never imagined that I would be eating at a restaurant that served my cultural food in a way that appeals to the millenial generation. When me and my wife decided to try out Chawk Bazar we were skeptical before we went in because we were so used to the traditional flavours and recipes that our moms and aunts use in their cooking. We were starving by the time we made the journey from downtown Toronto all the way uptown to Lawrence. I'm pretty sure I was ready to eat the whole menu. The lovely waitress, sensing our hunger and indecisiveness on what to eat suggested we each get two of the Chawk's Platter as it contained a lot of the appetizers already. We were definitely unprepared for the amount of delicious food that came with just the starting platter. The Phuchka, Bihari Kebab, Shingara and Bun Kebab not only filled our bellies, but took me on a journey back to my hometown of Dhaka where these items are staples of Bangladeshi street food culture. Bangladeshi cuisine is delicious, but generally very messy (which can be part of the fun when you are at home, but you don't want to be covered in curry stains when you are out for a nice dinner). Chawk Bazar provides a new take on this cuisine by presenting traditional recipes in more contemporary styles so that it appeals to younger generations or people who are looking to venture into this style of cuisine for the first time. We have been back here three times since 2018 and each time I am impressed with the service and seasonal menu changes. So, I've been to this place twice. The first time I went with my husband for a late lunch/early dinner, and we were quite impressed with the food. We got an appetizer sampler, biryani and the 'risotto' with achari beef. The service, this first time around, was not attentive and left something to be desired, but we were one of two parties dining in the restaurant at the time, and so didn't have to wait too long for anything. Decided to cut them some slack. I then decided to return a second time with my husband and in laws. It was a Saturday and we had made reservations, and the restaurant was absolutely packed. This dining experience was a complete disaster. I will list my main points of contention: 1. No one came to the table when we took a seat to ask us for water/beverages. Had to gesture to the guy at the front, who I'm pretty sure is one of the proprietors, because the wait staff would not make eye contact. The guy came and immediately started asking what our order would be, didn't even see that we were not set up with beverages. 2. The waiter assigned to our table was mumbling, couldn't understand what he was saying. He didn't come around during the course of our lunch to ask us how we were doing and if we needed anything. No eye contact, would completely ignore us. 3. The other waiter (the same girl who was there on our first visit - she does not smile and seems like she doesn't want to be there) came with the appetizer plates that we ordered, which are HUGE, and sat them down on our disproportionately small table and knocked away my sister in law's plate as well as knocking down my drink, and just walked away. I told the proprietor about this, who offered to get me another drink, but that wasn't the point of my complaint. The waitress had no sense to see that there was clearly no place for her to put down this giant platter, and that she should make some adjustments on the table before doing so. 4. I ordered 5 naans. When they came, they were warmed up pita breads. When I asked the proprietor why this is, he said their naan machine was broken. Why didn't he mention this when we gave the order? He's the one who took our order. I would have ordered less/different kind of bread. 5. The proprietor could tell our experience was pretty bad, he came around to the table and was like, 'today is not a good day'. Who says this? If you're not able to manage the reservations you have taken, please don't try to illicit sympathy from the customers. Apologize and do better. 6. This place is Bangladeshi/Bengali. It was evident that other diners in the restaurant belonged to this cultural group, and some had more of a rapport with the proprietor. I am Pakistani and somewhat familiar with the food. My husband and in laws are West Indian, and are much less familiar. They didn't make us feel comfortable, or explain much of anything. It is clear that they are trying to reach a wider audience with a well decorated place and unique menu, but their service is HORRIBLE and their wait staff is unfriendly and needs a LOT of training. There are other things I could mention but I think this paints a pretty good picture of our experience. Holy bloody hell! This place was delicious! My friend and I went last night and not only was the food top notch, but the service was excellent! Our server, while very young, knew what to recommend. She was on top of her game for sure! We had the Bazaar Bites (platter full of deliciousness), spicy fish pakoras, and the Kachchi Biryani. Everything was amazing! My favourite, if I had to pick one, was the naga crab on the platter. I have never had East Indian crab before, and it was incredibly tasty! The stuffed paratha was well used to scoop up every bit of sauce. Their house made beverages were great too. I had the lychee iced tea, sweet and refreshing. Fuchka- 6 pieces for $7 is a bit too extreme plus the taste of it was nothing close to what fuchka tastes like. Chotpoti- worst chotpoti I ever had, it had no taste. Entrees: Dhakaiya Tehari- only dish I actually liked and would recommend to anyone. but rice to meat ratio was very less. Murog Polao- which basically translate to Chicken Rice( polao rice from Bangladesh is used to make this rice) Beef biriyani- rice mixed with turmeric and beef with no taste. But they used basmati rice to cook the rice with no flavours at all. Final thought, this is not authentic Bangladeshi/Bengali food. I am sorry but if you are naming a place Chawk Bazar and your food lacks the authenticity and the real spices used in the Bengali cuisine then this place no different to any other food court food with a much higher price tag. read more

Two reviews with five stars each. Here's a third. Honestly, Chawk deserves it. I go out to eat quite a bit, and I try to eat at as many new places as possible because I get bored easily. This year, with my birthday around the corner, I've been in a bit of a food slump because I feel like I've had many of things Toronto has to offer already. Chawk ended that slump. I can't stop gushing. First, the inside is beautiful. Very chic, very modern, and very Instagrammable. Second, the service is super friendly and super helpful. Even before we ordered, complimentary lychee mango drinks were given to us. What an indication of the meal to come! The food. THE FOOD. I can't say enough good things about the food. If I don't hit the character limit for this review, I'll be super surprised. Chawk has two appetizer platters. Both of them are stunning and come on a wooden board. Both of them consist of entirely different options. Each come with 4 appetizers, and cost $15. The chawk platter came with phuchka (pani puri with mashed chickpea inside), mini singara (almost like a samosa), bihari sliders (beef kebab on fresh flatbread), and macher tikki (fishcake). Oh. And chop suey fries? Think really thin, delicious, fried potato string garnish. Phuchka - You fill the phuchka with tamarind water and you down it fast. Otherwise, it leaks out. It's meant to be that way. Savory, refreshing, slightly sweet, slightly tangy. Mini Singara - Almost like a rounded samosa. The potato and chickpea filling was very fluffy. I appreciated being able to see the layers of filling in my singara. The tamarind sauce was tasty as well. Macher tikki - I was skeptical. Fish cakes aren't my thing. Usually over-breaded and over-spiced. Not the case here. Thin breading. Could still taste the fish under it. Crispy. Flaky. Served with a spiced mayo. Bihari slider - three/four bite taco sized. AMAZING. You could taste the beef through the spices. The carrot/beet/onion strings on top helped cut some of the richness, and the flatbread was so fluffy! I could make a meal out of these babies and be super satisfied. Then comes our main. Just one between the two of us because the appetizer platter was so large. All day breakfast. Interesting. Lamb shank, frittata, steamed spicy potatoes, tart eggplants, stuffed parathas, fruit chaat, and an egg done our way. Also $15, and also served on a board. Well, a board and a plate, cuz the lamb shank wouldn't fit onto the board. Our sunny side up was done right. Oozy yolk. Plus points for crispy brown edges. I've got to hand it to them. Every curried food item we had tasted distinct. No base sauces here. They're all different. The potatoes weren't masked by the curry. I'm a sucker for Indian eggplant dishes and this one didn't disappoint. The fruit chaat was like a yogurt filled with berry bits and spices. And I mean filled. Loads of fruit in here. I rather enjoyed it. Didn't know frittatas were Indian. This one was tasty though. Also quite fluffy. Big chunk of broccoli on top. The least Indian tasting food we had, but tasty nonetheless. The lamb shank. IT WAS HUGE. Biggest lamb shank I've ever seen. Also tender and smelled incredible. Great indications for taste. I can't say enough good things about it. A bit of the egg, a piece of the lamb, and a bit of the eggplant on a piece of their paratha and you've got one heck of a bite! The leftovers are going to be amazing. And there were leftovers. But then we had dessert. This birthday girl thought ahead. Asked about birthday specials. Secret menu? The key to my heart. Deep fried kulfi. Um... Woah much. We had the fried kulfi (malai/milk flavored) and the paan kulfi (because what is paan?). The paan kulfi was interesting. Was told paan is a leaf that is usually filled with spices and then chewed after a meal. Good to know, but no clue what it should taste like. In my mind, that means I have to try it. It looks like pistachio. It tastes floral and minty and is subtly spiced, but I couldn't tell you with what. It was definitely interesting. The fried kulfi was all about textural contrast. Creamy kulfi with a crunchy fried exterior. Not too sweet. Not too breaded. Very enjoyable. Dessert was free (presumably because birthday) and they still made it beautiful. Long rectangular dish, berry garnishes, gooseberry garnish, cinnamon bark strips, little sprinkles of spices. The aesthetics are just WOW. $30 plus tax and tips for so much amazing food. Bang for buck plus service and ambiance makes this easily one of my new favorite restaurants in Toronto, and I've only had two dishes on the menu. I can't wait to come again and try the rest. With a small space that can accomodate about 25-30 customers, Chawk Bazar gives you a great glimpse of authentic Bangladeshi food and its history. With a very beautiful ambience, a well defined menu, and a excited and young staff, this restaurant definitely knows how to wow the customers. I was super impressed with the food (although a bit spicy) and the ambience. The drinks menu (especially the Goan drink) was also something that I enjoyed. Wow what an amazing place! Now they are serving through uber eats. This is very chic and the decor is amazing! We loved the food! And they add creativity to their dishes especially during dessert! As a group, we couldn't have had a better place to eat at! It is very small for a group so be warned! They do not serve alcohol but they do serve lemonade! I ordered twice so far over the last two weeks. Food from Chawk Bazar. I must say food were great and tasty. It feels like I am eating in Bangladesh. I am disappointed however that they charge $15 to deliver 14th ave and Markham road and minimum order $150 for Markham. They did gave me break with $150, also the potion size is small specially when I am ordering more than $100 each order. Overall taste of food great, however best bang for the buck can be improved. What a nice place! My favourite was the drink, Goan Green and dessert, the Paan Kulfi! I would visit again just for these two items. For mains I ordered the Haash Bhuna which came with polao, haash bhuna, daal, and pickled eggplant. The portions were really reasonable for the price. For appetizers I had the Chot Puti which was good too. I would like to try all the other appetizers on the menu next time. Customer service was great. The owner Fahim was very helpful. Chawk Bazar is a delightful experience that is absolutely recommended. Their brunch is SO good and an absolute steal for value and quality. Not to be missed is their malai kulfi (you will NOT be disappointed and its truly never too early in the day for dessert). The space if beautiful, service is welcoming and friendly and the food is fresh, flavorful and a unique brunch experience in the traditional Toronto brunch landscape. My only complaint is that I wished they opened earlier than 12. For those on here discrediting Chawk Bazar for 'authenticity' - I would question what that even means. It's a food experience that is interpreted by people who are from the community (not a case of cultural-appropriation of food) in a way that is nuanced and melds together aspects of various South Asian diaspora foods, to create something that I think is 'authentic' in many regards to a hybridized experience that many immigrants and second generation people experience. By far one of the best bengali restaurants in north America. The ambiance was great, service staffs were warm and friendly, the food tasted awesome, and the best part is the creative ways to present the food. Loved the luchi kebab, the achari beef and the biriyani . The only disappointing thing was even on a friday evening they didn't have a lot of the menue items available. read more

Finally a nice restaurant in Toronto where you can enjoy Bengali food. We ordered the Naga crab with luchi as an appetiser- it was perfect, went very well with the fluffy luchis, Morog pulao was one of the mains - the rice of the pulao is so tasty that you can just eat the rice with no accompaniment, Roast chicken - was tasty and flavorful, not at all like the typical Indian curries which all taste the same, the other main was lamb shank with khichri - the lamb shank was soft and succulent, made to perfection, the khichri was a bit bland. We had two drinks - lichi iced tea-that was okayish, the Green mango drink- it was perfect-sweet, tangy, very refreshing. We finished it off with Pan kulfi, it was yum yum yum. Overall, very good experience, we will definitely come again with friends. After being recommended by a friend went for iftar followed by dinner. The ambiance was great but the food wasn't that great. It was kind of okay. This is one of the eateries that I'll visit once only. I am yet to taste their Goan drink and the most advertised paan kulfi so may be I'll visit the place once again for those two items. First time - mind blown by their smart menu, modern decor, good food. although, Ilish Biriyani was not to my liking. Second time - Huge disappointment when the Calcutta Biriyani (biriyani special) was a plateful of chinigura rice (no, not Long grain Basmati), a peice of unseasoned potato, and a chicken leg quarter floating in a POOL of oil. It was almost inedible, and clearly, the chef has never eaten a Calcutta Biriyani. Chicken Kasha was a comedy - a tiny peice of thigh rubbed with some spices. Bright side - Their Paan Kulfi is to die for! Their drinks are not bad either. They are trying really hard to make this restaurant work - their dedication to good food shows! But they need to revise some of their recipes (they can start at youtube). Will I go again? Maybe only for the paan kulfi. read more
