Dental care is not something that most people get terribly excited about. When most people think of the dentist, the immediate thought is the dental practices portrayed in "The Little Shop of Horrors", where the dentist is a masochist playing out his fantasies on unsuspecting patients. My early years of dental care were not too far off from that, and as a child, the worst thing I could hear was that I have a cavity. This meant that I was going to be subjected to the dreaded phrase "This is pretty small, so I don't think we will need any Novocaine."
Dentistry, needless to say, has come a long way from the 70s.
I have a nice little genetic issue with pockets in my teeth, which means I get to go to the dentist 3 times a year for cleaning rather than two. And let's face it: it is the cleaning that is required most often at the dentist. So while the dentist is important, the hygienists who do the cleaning really are the star of the show.
A friend of mine who used to live in the 'boro recommended Dr. Chavez about 5 years ago. This was one of the best recommendations I have ever received. I have worked with two hygienists there, and both were absolutely fabulous. Both have been kind, easy going, and very forthright in their diagnosis of what needs to be done. They provide a small flat screen TV above the chair, so if you want to watch TV on cable with a headset in, you are more than welcome. My teeth cleanings go rather well, and I don't have that really sore feeling after getting scraped by the dreaded hooks. The people really know their craft, and it shows in the results.
Dr. Chavez is very nice and easy going, and he does a really thorough job with the checkups after the cleaning. I have also been in there when his sister was substituting, and she is equally professional and easy going. I have had fillings replaced by Dr. Chavez, and all of them came out great!
With the proliferation of many chain dentistry outlets recently, it is nice to find a local person that gives the attention to detail and care that isn't found at "the big boys" out there. read more
