This is the best Mexican you're going to find around Elgin, seriously dont waste time anywhere else. This is NOT a chain, so you're getting some of the best home-cooked food. The staff and owners are AWSOME!! Super friendly, pleasantly attentive, and people who will remember you with a smile the next time you come in. Chavelas has it's own private parking along the side of their building. They offer limited seating outdoor (which is covered) and ample seating indoor with both booth, tabletop, and Bartop options. It's football season, but dont worry as Chavelas has several T.V.'s for your viewing pleasure throughout the restaraunt and at the bar. The restaraunt is always clean which is one thing I always admire about here, they truly care at Chavella's. Lets talk food!! Today I ordered the Chavella's Special which is "a little bit of everything"; absolutely hit the spot!! The menu has all your favorites and some new ones you didn't know about, but be sure to look at the "Specials board" at the front as you walk in. Chavella's offers your normal fountain drinks, Jarritos (my favorite), Horchata, and many others. The full bar can bring a smile as well whether it's a beer, Michelangelo, or their own Sangria!!! If you are loving the fall weather and are looking for soup try their Carne En Su Jugo, it's one of their specials and for a great reason. Ask for their "House hot sauce" if you want a bit more Ying; it's soooooooo goooooooooood and not overbearing. Brightly colored wall hangings adorn the walls and ceiling at Chavela's. It's a family labor of love running this establishment and you feel it as soon as you enter. My chile relleno was homemade by the owner who comes in daily at 6 am to prepare sauces, tortillas and other food items because store bought isn't good enough for their customers. They do things "old school " where pride and service and caring still matters and why they make flan from scratch. It's why their Margaritas are enormous and Sangrias have fresh fruit because that little extra means something. Our server Gigi said they are remodeling next week so now it will be even better. Our ROMEO group of 10 went here today for lunch. Waitress was very good...took our drinks immediately. We had an assortment of lunch specialties and two of us ordered the Cuban Torta. Everyone said the food was good. Complimentary chips were good along with the Salsa. Salsa was good, not really runny and mild. All the lunch specialties were pretty good. The Torta sandwiches are huge! We both ate half of it and took the other half home. It's filled with everything...ham, carnitas, avocado, beans, lettuce, tomato. I've had it before and would order it again. Average rating from the 10 of us was 4.0...and ranged from one 3.5 to 5.0....most giving it a 4.0. Nice Mexican restaurant. Excellent lunch 5/21/24 Tuesday with a friend. He had the fajitas and I had the fried tacos. Tasted very authentic for the tacos and he reported his fajitas were the same and delicious. We sat in a corner booth with a speaker above which was a little distracting with the music they were playing but we were still able to carry on a good conversation as it wasn't too loud. Waitress was great and gave good recommendations and she was knowledgeable on the menu. She checked on us frequently but not obtrusively. They were fairly busy but still had plenty of open tables. We had unexpected car troubles and ended up being towed to a spot right across from this restaurant. Our tow truck driver gave high recommendations, so we gave it a whirl. It was a Tuesday and they had $1.25 hard taco special. Tacos were stuffed well with meat. They did not skimp on portion. The lettuce and cheese were fresh as well. We had zero complaints. We will definitely come back for food when we are back in town. We sat at the bar and Louie was super amazing. It was my BF's birthday and he made sure we had a great time. Someone else at the bar also called someone to take a look at our vehicle. My phone battery was dying and another staff member let me use her charger to charge up. The whole staff was super nice. We placed our order after waiting for 45 minutes thy brought out the first order( supposed to be steak fajita nachos) they brought chicken fajita. They took it back. The second dish (supposed to be Chavela's fajita) they brought chicken fajita. They took that back. Then they brought the third order ( trios fajita) it was correct. My wife whose order was correct was finished with her order by the time they corrected the second order. Then they said it would be an additional wait so they could make more chips for the steak fajitas nachos. So one person pretty much didn't eat because we weren't waiting an additional 15 to 20 minutes or who knows how long to receive the first order. Then I over heard one waitress tell another that they were out of tea. Very in professional. I have always enjoyed eating there in the past. I don't plan on going back. read more

Our lunch group of 8 went here yesterday. About four of us had been here before and liked it so we thought we'd try it once more. Two of us ordered the Cubana Torte sandwich and it was one of the best Torta's I've ever had. Served hot with ham, meat, fried egg, avocado, lettuce and I believe Mayo and possibly some cheese. It was on a large heated Brillo bun and the taste was absolutely great. We both were surprised that we ate the whole thing! They had good salsa...not real spicy, but very good, and gave us several large baskets of chips. Everyone else seemed to like their orders and were mainly the lunch specials with enchiladas, tacos and refined beans and queso cheese. Service was very good. They have a nice covered porch on the front for eating out when the weather's nice. I'll definitely be going back. read more

We went for lunch today. Everything was wonderful. All the food is made per order nothing batched up ahead of time. So the freshness is second to none. I had been seeing this place and I've wanted to stop in here for a few years and so I opted to come on in here last Wednesday. I ordered the shrimp street taco and it was ok. Then I ordered two beef regular tacos. Those were good. Not packed with a lot of flavor but good. I ordered a lime margarita and it was ok. All in all a ok experience. We past 3 other Mexican restaurants to come here!This place used to be absolutely amazing! However tonight we went the service was absolutely horrible, we ordered our food waited over 30 minutes. We had to ask the waiter for more drinks, chips were stale. When we finally asked about our dinner he said that it would be at least another 20 minutes. He told us that we could leave if we wanted to after we paid for the drinks and queso. I do not know if the owners have changed but we will never go back to this restaurant. The guy at the bar was drinking more drinks than he was making. I would give this place a negative 5. What a horrible experience! read more

Honestly wasn't planning on eating out, but I stopped by while on a drive. As soon as we walked in the service was welcoming and we were told we could seat ourselves. Once we sat down it was fairly busy, but the hostess took our drink orders. About 5 or so minutes later the waitress took our order and all was well. About 10 minutes later our food arrived, I got the Chavela's special and overall the dish was a 7/10 most of it was decent. Although I had a major problem with two things though, the rice that was served was very very dry and the beans left a bad taste in my mouth overall otherwise the rest of the food was mediocre and I'm not in a hurry to go back. read more

So I revisited here with my family after writing my initial review and I think I had a much better experience than before. I thought the food was authentic and it came out fast and hot. The menus look like they need to be replaced and it would be nice to see a section dedicated to kids options. There was nothing spectacular about the margarita. I tasted my wife's strawberry margarita and it was super sweet. the staff were nice, the place wasn't very busy for a Saturday night. We had originally planned to eat at San Jose in Lugoff, but we couldn't afford the wait because of plans afterwards. I think I'll plan to come here again and likely take advantage of the lunch offerings. I'd like to see Chavela's offer other incentives to bring me back a bit more often, but maybe I just haven't been there often enough to notice. read more

Scam, Ripoff Bill: Clearly mentioned "ALL" Fajitas are served with Rice and Beans and we had ordered 2 Taco Salad Fajitas which were $8.99 each. They served us just the Taco Salad without Rice and beans. Server brought menu to me and I showed her under Fajitas in brackets it was clearly mentioned "ALL" Fajitas are served with Rice and Beans. So she asked if we wanted it. I said yes thinking they won't charge us extra for rice and beans after showing her their written menu..!! Yet they had Guts to charge us for 2 rice and beans. Our Bill with 2 Taco Fajitas and 1 Pepsi was suppose to be $8.99+$8.99 + $2/$3 for drink = $ ~20/21 But our Bill came upto $33..!!! They charged us $10 extra for 2 beans and 2 Rice which was supposed to be included in our Taco Salad Fajitas..!! Taste: good Not Excellent Red Salsa was ok, Chips didn't taste fresh and crisp, hot Salsa was good. Service: Took almost 30' to get our order out.
