I have been to Chaval a few times now and i can absolutely say i enjoy my experience everytime. I think the staff is absolutely incredible - attentive, knowledgeable, extremely friendly. They make you feel very welcome and will answer any questions you have. I have great beverages when I dine here as well, fantastic wines, they did well choosing the wine list and it's always delicious. I even enjoyed a fantastic cocktail this most recent time i went and I think it might have been my favorite cocktail i've ever had. The Ay Caramba! which was reminiscent of a dirty martini and spicy margarita - it was fantastic! Now for what has deemed this a 3 star instead of higher - the food and prices. The food is wonderful, i don't remember having a bad bite but for some of the pricing i would hope i wouldn't. I think the snacks and appetizers are more fairly priced for what they are considering portland in general but I was rather disappointed that the doses weren't more of a wow factor. My biggest concern was the paella night that they have every monday, i had been so excited to go and finally got the chance. I was disappointed to find out it is $28 a person and a minimum of two people so it's actually $56 total minimum. As a solo diner i couldn't justify that for myself and wish they would make that clear when they advertise it every Monday on instagram. I love Chaval but I don't think the dishes make sense all the time - i think it is in the eye of the beholder how you feel about this place!

Pollock Special

Reserved a table for our wedding anniversary. Alex our server was great at explaining the specials, offering wine recommendations and providing details on the dishes. The pollock main was outstanding. The wait staff all came over to wish us a happy anniversary. Wonderful dining experience.

We stopped in for dinner at the bar and had a great time! The food and drinks were absolutely delicious but the service was what we were really impressed by. Asher and the rest of the team were knowledgeable, friendly and had great attention to the detail. Super cute and cozy ambiance.

Heard about this charming place and had to check it out. Easily made reservations within a few days of date and table was ready to roll upon arrival. Recommend incorporating in a little time for parking if going on a busy night as there is limited parking around this location. Staff quickly received us upon arrival and once seated explained the menu and recommended good pairings for meal. Warm olives were flavorful and always love a good beet salad as well. Both were delicious! The coq au vin was exquisite and had us craving for more. We were full by nights end and very thankful we decided to try Chaval for a quiet night out on the town!

Amazing date night spot. We decided to follow the specials and enjoyed every bite. We also opted for the drink specials and were blown away! Service was impeccable.

Coq au Vin

The Coq au vin was exceptional, as was the wine and the service. Wonderful dinner. Had not been here in a long while. Still worth a visit!

What was great: - The radishes (with cashew dijon butter, dulse, and sea salt) - the radishes were soft (in a good way; the butter tastes vaguely of wasabi [in a good way]) - Pan con Tomate (garlic-rubbed sourdough, diced tomatoes) - The ceviche special - The Day-o (a sweet cocktail) - The Asparagus ice cream () with capers and lemon, paired with vermouth Small, inventive, tapas-style plates, a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and friendly staff!

Spring salad. Fresh greens and seasoning made it.

Seems to be hit or miss and service can make or break you. Steak has to be recooked 3x to achieve the medium pink but at least they did so. Private party in house so they shuttled us to the back. The desserts made up for hiccups here and there and friendly service. Spring salad had good seasoning and tamarind sweet potato et al in-house soda is worth a try. Restaurant has potential and I've heard friends have enjoyed their meals there.

Jamon on iconic meat slicer

One of our favorite restaurants in Portland. Warm and welcoming, with dishes that are classic and well-prepared. Awesome bar program. We always get the amazing Jamon! And best kept secret in town: vermouth happy hour with flights of vermouth and sherry! Save room for dessert. You won't regret it.

Mushroom Toast

Outstanding service, and creative dishes. We sat at the bar and were able to watch them cook which was a nice added bonus. They have really good synergy in that kitchen and it's obvious by the food. The bartenders also put a lot of effort in and added up to a great experience. I ate myself right to the limit, if anything stood out if might be the mushroom toast with the frontage blanc, but every single bite was fantastic. Really great vibe too, you get the sense that a lot of people there are regulars.

Churros Desserts

This felt like a really nice elevated dining experience! The menu was innovative and interesting. Our server Jud was very personable and had great recommendations. We tried the fingerlings with caviar (first time trying!) it came together nicely with the crema and the brininess of the caviar. We also tried the pan con tomate which was good but not outstanding, and the head on shrimp special which was delish! We tried three desserts - a kind of berry trifle with a honey/pine meringue (very good and botanical!), the churros (classic, good vanilla curd), and the white asparagus ice cream because what? The first bite was weird - it's definitely asparagus, but as you go on it kind of mellows out and becomes surprisingly delicious? There are crunchy fennel and caper toppings which again sounds weird, but added so much! Would definitely be back to try more as it seems the menu changes frequently. They also are hosting cocktail classes this summer that look super fun!

Perfect g&t

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Chaval until now TL;DR - everything on the menu is good so definitely over-order, leave room for dessert, and enjoy excellent service!! Chaval is absolutely one of the best restaurants in Portland (Leeward and Regards would be the others I'd put in the same category). The menu changes quite a bit, but you really can't go wrong with anything. Portions aren't huge, but it's fine since you'll want to try a few things. Cocktails and wine list are also excellent. Desserts are top notch and if you remember one thing it is that you absolutely need to save room for something sweet!!!! Service is impeccable. You'll interact with multiple people - all of whom can answer questions (or just share a nice convo with). If you haven't been yet this is your sign to make a reservation asap!

Expensive and food was pretty forgettable. Couldn't name you a dish I enjoyed it. Drinks were fine. Value proposition lacking imo

We didn't really look it up before hand and I think we were expecting more of like a dive bar and couldn't have been more wrong. As soon as we walked in the door, we were really digging the decor and overall layout of the place. We were seated right away at the bar and got a couple drinks pretty quickly. The bartender was a younger guy and super friendly. He was very approachable and was really knowledgeable about the gluten free experience (my wife has celiac), which got us excited to come back another day for dinner. My wife got the Short Story Long, which had a really interesting, herbal/vegetal flavor that she really enjoyed overall. I got the Pulp Fiction, which was a flavor bomb all the way with the hint of rye flavor but also a hint of fruit and other layers that was just really fantastic. We will absolutely come back here with the kids for dinner some night!

While I wasn't particularly impressed with the flavor of the martini, I did enjoy the olives. Next, we tried the mushroom & truffle dumplings and lobster dumplings. Unfortunately, the lobster dumplings were quite dry and lacked the flavor I was hoping for. The standout dish of the night was easily the baby corn, which was incredibly flavorful and probably the best thing we ordered. The cucumber salad, on the other hand, was pretty underwhelming. It lacked flavor overall but had a surprisingly strong spicy kick at the end. We finished the meal with bao buns, which were another disappointment. They were overly greasy and didn't leave a great final impression. Overall, I'd give the ambiance a 10/10 but the food a 5/10. The restaurant has a great vibe and beautiful atmosphere, but for the price point, I expected much more from the food. It's definitely a spot where the atmosphere outshines the menu.

The michelada was fresh and delicious, and my friend got a fresh-squeezed orange juice that was frothy to in a way I've never seen before. He said he could drink a gallon of it. Both sandwiches were perfection. The burger had an amazing bun and the perfect ratio of all the ingredients. The corn cakes on the breakfast sandwich were different, but in the best way. I love their decor and the lighting the space had, the theme was awesome. We cozied up at the booth. Our server left much to the imagination. He wasn't very welcoming and was quite short with us throughout the visit. My fiancé avoids black peppercorns as a sensitivity and this was met with a strange attitude. He denied that he could have anything, though he did end up checking with the kitchen. The kitchen uses a pre prepared mix of salt, black pepper and other spices. I mused that surely they must have plain salt, and could that alone be added to the burger he was planning on getting? Refusal and denial it was possible. So when I received my drink, sprinkled with salt on top, it was confusing. My friends both got the breakfast sandwich, which is also sprinkled with plain salt on top the corn cakes. So clearly it is both present behind the bar and in the kitchen. I myself ordered the hash which I thought was pretty underwhelming and lacked flavor (and I received the spice blend). I did really like the latte I got, it was straight up delicious. By the time we got our food, our server just about disappeared all together. My fiancé never received the only drink he ordered. Despite wanting to, none of us were able to order a second drink. The absolute cherry on top was when presented the check on the little electronic tablet, the preset tip options on a check over $100 was 20%, 25%, and 30%. Girl.... yall know yall are wrong for that. Very disappointing and despite really enjoying the drinks we did actually receive, I won't be back.
