We have been patrons of CHAUCERS & MARIENBAD restaurants for many many years. 20 years ago we mover to BC and just now returned. Their website shows the restaurant is only open on FRIDAY + SATURDAY for dinner. On the occasional SUNDAY the restaurant opens for dinner to service the Clients attending a ? ? ? show but is is not displayed on their site. This site shows they are open MONDAY thru SATURDAY and closed on SUNDAY. When calling, you will speak with someone who will explain about the show. Unfortunately, the owners have NO idea how to advertise their hours accurately ergo, it is best to call before going - it will alleviate disappointment ! I found my new favourite bar. Impressive selection of imported and craft beers in dingy, old, stone building with a roaring fireplace? Sold. The bar is located right across from Milos (another fantastic place) and boasts a variety of beers in their beer bible. I had a chimay white served from the bottle, and for 7$, it was damn well worth it. I'll be returning for the food. read more

Chaucer's is good. This used to be my former "After-Work" go to spot. A group of lawyers and a supply of draught beer and scotch, what could go wrong. --- Service --- The staff are always very friendly, always remembering what drink I would order, allowing me to sit down and the drink would just simply arrive at my table. That is what I consider a great experience. --- Food --- Food is average. The appetizers, Spinach and cheese dip in particular, are great. The food is brought over from the Marienbad, the sister restaurant to this Pub. --- Drinks --- It is a bit limiting, but every now and then they have a great beer selection. They have your standard draught beers with occasional "unique" beers. --- Overall --- The reason this wouldn't get a higher rating is because the overall vibe. I used to really enjoy this place but it just seems too odd nowadays. It would never fall below 3 stars, as the service is always great and the food is alright. Worth checking out if you are into the old-school genuine pub feel. read more

Being a lifetime local with Czech heritage, it's a bit dumbfounding that I had never eaten here until last night. And after drinking a "Czech Bud" and eating Hungarian Goulash, I am kicking myself for being so foolishly amiss. The food was incredible! And I was so happy to see the bread dumplings (the kind my grandma made) alongside the thick, meaty, slightly spicy goulash. The side of sour cream added a nice flavour to every bite. My sister had the schnitzel and my small taste test sized bite was very good. The pub was cozy (great fireplace!) and the lone waitress/bartender was friendly and since I was the only one in there for a short time, she was willing to answer my random questions & carry on a conversation. I liked the decor, too - old world charm one would say, I suppose. Definitely a place to visit again. read more

There are a few really great pubs in London, and this one may be my favourite. There's a lot to like. It's in an historic building in downtown London (former printing house of the London Free Press), there's lovely old wood trim, and a big fireplace in the middle of the pub. In the winter, this is the coziest spot in downtown London, especially when there's a gang of folks playing fiddle tunes off in the corner. For some reason, so many pubs these days crank the music far beyond a reasonable level. I'd suffer through it if the music was apropos to the setting, but usually the speakers are blasting whatever ephemerally-popular artist is hot at the moment. Chaucer's doesn't do this to its patrons, which is *so* refreshing. It's never too noisy here - the loudest sound is the hum of good conversation. If you come by yourself, this is a great place to dig deeply into a novel. There's a killer beer selection, too. All sorts of great European brews, and a focus on Belgian ales. They even carry Russian beer - Baltika 3 - which holds a special place in my heart. However, lately they've been low on stock, which can get frustrating, especially if your first four choices are on the menu, but not in the fridge. That's why I can only give this place 4 stars. If you need to soak up the booze, the food is delicious, too. Chaucer's serves the same menu as the next-door Marienbad restaurant. I'd recommend the schnitzel, and the potato salad. read more

Best beer selection in London, though the draughts are limited they're always good, and an enormous catalogue of bottles. It has a fireplace, the service is (usually) good, there is an assortment of weaponry and beer steins on the walls... In short, everything you could want in a pub. Great music too on Wednesday nights. Fiddles, guitars, a banjo, occasionally a harp or a concertina, playing Celtic standards. This was the only place I went with any regularity to drink in London, apart from the Grad Club at UWO. After a walk through the snow, a tripel by the fireplace here is indeed as good as it gets. read more

Chaucer's Pub has one of the best beer menus I've seen in London - (and that alone is deserving of 4 stars) - however, combine that with a delicious food menu and decor consisting of weaponry - and the four stars are definitely warranted! Chaucer's has a large "beer book" with beers from all over the world - including an extensive selection of Belgian beers (my favorite!). And the prices are right - I definitely couldn't get these beers in Toronto for those prices! The food menu consists of Hungarian and German foods, which though I haven't had myself, I've heard everything is amazing. This place is also great for groups - because it isn't super busy, meaning you can always find a few tables to group together. The only downside of the place, which is taking away a star, is the service. Because it isn't very busy, I would have expected a little more attentiveness - but there were a few times we even had to look for the only waitress, because there were no staff in the "pub half" at all. Apparently all the staff work at both the restaurant and the pub - they should probably invest in pub specific staff. Besides that (small) downside, Chaucer's is definitely a great place to check out in London. read more

These place seems fairly intimidating...looks fancy. Inside however is cozy and inviting. I ordered just a simple appetizer, artichoke dip with chips. Much to my surprise it had REAL artichokes in it. Seems to be good selection of beers...everyone at my table seemed pleased. No generic beers were ordered. I will return when I am hungrier to order a full meal. The menu looked fabulous. read more

Chaucer's is truly a London landmark and a great place to go for almost any occasion. The vast assortment of European brews and food makes it a winning combination. The fireplace and cozy atmosphere makes it perfect for a romantic date and party rooms make it ideal for groups. The staff are friendly and the food is amongst my favourite in the city. While I understand to each their own, standouts for me are the Wencelas cheese, the tartar sauce and the goulash (all made fresh on site.) They've had the same chef for as long as I can remember and the quality has been amazing and consistent. The atrium room is visually stunning and perfect on warm sunny days. It is also ideally located to grab a bite to eat before an event at Budweiser Gardens or a srink or two afterwards. In terms of full disclosure, I actually used to work here about 20+ years ago - but this review is outside of that as it truly is a great place! As far as authentic pubs go - this is the real deal. I love this place, just for the vibes. The old school piano in the corner, the carpeted floors, the fire place, the servers who've been there forever. Those are the charming things that make a place feel cozy. The beer selection is good and they serve each beer in its respective/appropriate glass. If you order Hoegaarden wheat beer, expect for face to fit in huge hexagonal mug! read more

My favourite bar when looking for a warm and cozy hang out. Fireplace is always lit giving a very homey atmosphere. Service is usually very good. Large selection of beers all in their personalized glasses. Haven't really tried the food but some of it looks interesting. It's never too busy to find a table or too loud to have an actual conversation which is why I think it's such a great place! read more

Great selection of beers and fantastic food! It's one of the rare places that is every bit as gorgeous as you want it to be when you see it from the outside. A great place to sit and chat over a drink. And yes, I too am going to mention the fireplace. I've had this vision of what the pubs are like in Europe since I have never been, it remains only that. Chaucer's pub was a what my vision held as a one of these pubs. Complete with a slightly over served, loud patron Ultra cold the other night and the fireplace was roaring. The place was not too busy but there was a concert going on so supposed one was attending that or staying in to avoid the traffic, which was not too bad considering. Took us a little bit to find a parking spot but it was worth any hassle. Prime rib was better than fair. A great selection of beer. I'll be back in London next week and be sure it is one of my stops. read more

Great service! We had inadequate service at Milos, across the street, so I walked across to Chaucer's and asked if they could accommodate our group of 11 people at the last minute. The manager said it was no problem and put the tables together. They were mostly full at the time, too! The staff are so friendly and accommodating. The food was good, too. Reminded me of a comfortable pub in England where you can go have drinks and food with your friends for hours. read more

My husband and I have visited this restaurant 3 other times when we have been in London to attend events at the Budweiser Centre. We came across the Chaucer on our first visit to the Budweiser Centre and had such a pleasant dinner, the staff were accommodating, knowing we have a time crunch before the performance. Given the first excellent experience, it became our restaurant of choice when downtown London. However, our fourth visit will be our last. My husband and I, along with our 2 children and daughter's boyfriend visited the restaurant on December 28 prior to attending Jeff Dunham's performance at the Centre. We arrived at 5:00pm and were quickly served beverages and appetizers. Our server was pleasant and efficient. At 6:50pm, my husband asks the server where our meals are and she apologized and advised that they would be out momentarily. At this point the manager came over to apologize for the slowness saying that the other restaurant, which shares a kitchen with Chaucer, was fully packed and the staff were overwhelmed and if we wanted to leave he would void our meal. We decided to give them a second chance and waited for our meal. We should have taken the manager up on his offer. Very shortly our meal arrived, served at barely room temperature. We gulped down what we could and got ready to leave. To compensate us, the server advised that the manager took the cost of a bottle of wine from our bill. Not having the time nor inclination to argue, we paid our bill and left. At no time were we dissatisfied with our server, she was working very hard and was tipped well. Our issue was with the manager and his lack of service and the performance of the kitchen. The next day we wrote a letter to the restaurant stating our displeasure and I received a response from the manager, as quoted: During this evening 90% of our customers were attending the same show as you were. We have one kitchen that prepares dishes for both sides and the restaurant part did not have a large group, it was completely packed and they were all in the same situation as you were. I tried to attend most tables and that is the fact why I did not have a chance to come back to your table and when I did you were already gone. I was apologizing for the delayed service that night without making any excuses because I do realize that some people do not want to hear that and just want to get it done, even though I had one. Considering, the head chef injured himself that day and the team had to do the dinner service without him and without going into any details and based on the circumstances, I am very proud of the job they did because they all did their best. Your server during that evening was crying twice in the kitchen where I tried to comfort her and if we are all honest with ourselves we all know why. In almost 14 years of owning this establishment and over 20 years of managing hotels in 5 different countries worldwide, as far as I know, no customer/guest ever made my staff cry, and I do take it seriously because the staff is my family. I found his comments offensive and insulting. His comments certainly lead us to never return. For anyone thinking of attending this restaurant, be prepared for a wait and grief from the manager if you chose to complain. read more
