I stopped in expecting to get some fresh, homemade goodies this past weekend and was eager to get my baguettes, cake and cookie home. I scurried back to my flat, carbohydrate hoard in hand. The baguettes provided a sufficiently satisfying lunch, even if they weren't anything special. But the cake, the cookie - how I was disillusioned! How disenchanting! They were bad. Stale. Wrong. They both went into the bin. Cookies and cakes in the bin! What a joke of a patisserie.

A friendly spot headed by Ollie Gold, the original on Prebend Street adjacent Pophams "Home & Pantry," guests entering will note warm woods and dried flowers plus good Coffee and a dozen Pastries prone to frequent change. Now with two larger locations, including one with a nighttime Pasta program, fans of the Croissant will be happy to see no less than six choices on most days - plain Butter skipped in favor of sliced Ham and toasty Cheese plus nicely layered Almond and aromatic Banana Chai that may have fared better if the Fruit was cut into more manageable bites. Offering to warm most choices, a good idea for those able to snag limited seating, Pophams' Honey Salt Bun is absolutely delightful in its simplicity while the tightly wound Cardamom Bun is every bit as good as the famous ones at Juno in Copenhagen.

We hopped in our car and headed here one rainy afternoon. Street parking was a breeze here (pay by phone). The bakery itself is much more spacious than I anticipated with a beautiful indoor and outdoor seating space. Service was fast and friendly. Order at the counter and either take it to go or grab a seat and they will bring most things to you. If you're ordering bakery items they will give them to you right at the counter. If you're eating in prices are slightly higher (like most places in the UK. My kids all had the watermelon ice cream. We figured they were so big that we would eat the leftovers. That didn't happen. The high tea area is behind the bakery and it's much quieter and more intimate :) Decor was super cute and fancy; very festive for the holidays. We ordered the standard high tea which came with 5-6 savory bites and 5-6 sweet bites. After getting the tea, service went downhill. Three new parties were seated AND a party of 5 got their food before us (party of 4) along with two other tables who were seated after us. We had to flag the waitress down a few times since it seemed like they had forgotten about us :( Overall, good experience doing high tea in London but can't say I'd come back here for it again.

I loved how it was located on a quiet side street away from the bustle of the main roads. It added to the ambience and felt like you were in a neighborhood cafe. They also have a take away counter of the cakes and cupcakes inside as well. Something to note if you are sitting in the front part you will have people coming in and out. There's seating both inside and outside. We were seated inside and ordered from the all day menu. I did start with a pot of Vanilla Rooibos. This was right up my alley with flavor blend and not too caffeinated. I also ordered the eggs Benedict and the slice of the Carrot and Hazelnut Lemon Loaf. The standout was the Loaf cake. It wasn't overally sweet and I love a carrot cake. The lemon icing was just sweet enough to add to the cake part. It was reasonably priced and fairly fast to get a seat and order. It's not that the place looks so charming (it doesn't) but rather, the sweets displayed in the window look so irresistible. I waltzed in for Vanilla Flan (£4.30; more like firm custard in a crust, very good) then sat there long enough to notice that some of the savory offerings began to look very good too. This is how I wound up eating lunch in reverse. After the Flan I went on to share a personal-sized Mushroom Pizza (with ham; £5) and a Salade Goat Cheese (£12) which was different than what I'd expected. Rather than placing fresh goat cheese into the salad itself, the cheese was warmed atop sliced toasts, then laid around the salad. Did I mention there was a ton of goat cheese? There was. Between that and the English Bacon liberally topping the salad, this was the richest goat cheese salad I'd ever had and I couldn't come close to finishing the cheese and toasts. Luckily, the salad itself was quite good and, featuring a Dijon Vinaigrette, quite French inspired. I can't really recommend anyone consume so much rich food in one sitting but I can certainly recommend a visit to Maison Ruget. It's an unassuming little cafe producing some very good sweet and savory offerings and perfect for a casual lunch.
