On my final full vacation day in Winnipeg in early July, I had a hankering for schnitzel. I have…read morenever had any here. I did a search and Sam's appeared. Sam's has been around for over twenty years. I had never heard about it, likely because I didn't frequent too many eateries on Ness Avenue when I lived in Winnipeg. I had to visit. It was easy to find Sam's. The huge sign helped. It's across the street from a 7-Eleven. This eatery has a drive-thru. I normally like hitting one, but decided to dine in. I backed my car into a parking spot and walked it, passing by a couple of bikers who were about to leave. I was greeted by the nicest man. He said that I could sit anywhere and he'd come over. I sat in a cozy corner. I got a menu. I was happy looking at everything. I got the following items: - Red berry hibiscus lemonade - Chicken schnitzel in hunter-style sauce with spaetzle The hunter-style sauce consisted of mushrooms, onions, and light garlic that are sautéed in a pan with clarified butter and gravy. It sounded perfect. My red berry hibiscus lemonade came out first. It was refreshing and yummy. I don't like lemonade with a ton of sugar. This one was perfect. It had a hint of sweetness. I love hibiscus and lemon together. It was a generous size, too. My chicken schnitzel plate came out next. The schnitzel was delicious. The chicken was juicy with a thin, crispy coating around it. The hunter-style sauce was delicious. I love anything with garlic, mushrooms, and onions. This sauce was divine. I haven't had spaetzle in a while. I was fortunate to have some when I was in Frankfurt nearly a decade ago. This spaetzle reminded me of what I had in Frankfurt. It was yummy and authentic. This place had German chocolate cake, which I love. However, I was too stuffed to get some. Next time! I paid at the counter. I used my credit card and tipped. It was a smooth transaction. I needed to use the washroom. I had to ask the man to unlock the door. It's a single stall for the women's. It was clean. No complaints. This place is a gem. It offers authentic German good eats. I'd return again when I'm back in the city. (333)

This was one of the places I was recommended to try out and was highly disappointed with the food. It tasted bland and I couldn't even find fish sauce anywhere in the restaurant. Also, I have to mention... they were playing My Little Pony on the TV inside when I visited! I have no idea why, but honestly, it just adds to the quirky charm of the place. Totally random, but kind of hilarious. All in all, Khab Tapioca is a great little gem in Winnipeg -- tasty drinks, friendly service, and a fun, cozy vibe that makes you want to come back.

It a favourite place for locals and tourists to drop by during warmer weather. A couple of years after I had moved to Winnipeg, a friend of mine took me to BDI. She had a car and I did not at the time. There is parking available, but it does get busy. I last visited Winnipeg in July 2016. I had no problem nabbing a parking spot at around 7 pm. BDI is on Jubilee Avenue. It faces the Red River. There are a few benches where you can enjoy your dairy treat, which is what my friend and I did. There is also a pedestrian bridge that goes over the river if you'd like to take a stroll. When I was last there, I lined up to get a soft-serve cone. This place has plenty of flavour varieties and some specials each day. I was pleased to see vegan options. BDI's most famous flavour is the Goog. It's essentially an upside-down blueberry shake, with a hot fudge sundae and bananas. I believe it comes with whipped cream, too. I love the Saltzberg, which is a Nutella-filled waffle cone with vanilla ice cream, is dipped in chocolate, and has caramel drizzle, sea salt, and whipped cream on top. I realize why I have never walked across the pedestrian bridge with an ice cream delicacy. It's messy to eat and I'm not coordinated enough to eat anything at BDI and walk without a major disaster happening to my ice cream treat. No one wants to see me cry. I ordered a cool lemon soft-service ice cream cone when I was last here. I typically get sprinkles, but decided to try it without them. I love lemon and the ice cream was so creamy. The lemon was bright and refreshing. The cone was perfect. I liked the maple leaf wrap around the bottom of the cone. That evening, it was pouring rain. I had a car rental and no umbrella. I ended up enjoying my ice cream in the car. There was still a steady customer lineup, which shows that folks will come out for yummy ice cream regardless of what Mother Nature has in mind. When I was last here, you could only pay by cash. I'm not sure if it's still the case. For those who love ice cream year-round, there is a BDI store at Kildonan Place now. Yay! I hope to return and get my ice cream fix at BDI when I'm back in Winnipeg. (129)
