It has classic dark wood ambience inside, and a small patio out the back of the basement (apparently Queen's lead singer used to be a regular, so this is named the Mercury Bar) Food is ok. Maybe 1 cut below top-tier pub food. Scotch egg was a tad runny, and served with Oxford sauce that is more sour and less good than the HP Brown Sauce it replaces. Lamb Sunday Roast was a bit tough, and came with a paltry 4 roast potato segments of diminutive size. Service is excellent; consistently friendly and helpful. They are eager to fix things when matters go awry. The pub was recently closed for renovations, which seems mainly to have been making a new, larger Gents in the basement, and turning the old Gents' into a 2nd Ladies' room on the staircase. Fellow patrons seem to come more for drinks than food. I like this place, and I'll be back.

I let Ffiona know about not having dairy in my meals and she was clear on what could be adapted to not have dairy and which items to avoid completely. We had the sheppards pie, fish and chips, aubergine fritters, a tasty salad with some vegan cheese and a couple of desserts. They some great drink options too! We had a mocktail. Ffiona communicated that there was optional service charge that could be removed upon request before we even presented our card for payment. She made sure everything was perfect--from keeping our teapots topped up to explaining each of the delicious items on the tray with care and enthusiasm. Her attention to detail and calm, welcoming manner made us feel completely relaxed and well looked after. The food itself was delicious--beautifully presented sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and a tempting selection of sweet treats--but it was Theo's service that turned a great tea into a truly memorable occasion.
