We walked up outside and wrote our name on a list and waited about 20 minutes before being invited in. Once inside we got to see just how busy this popular Thai restaurant is. Not an empty chair to be seen. Once seated, there was a bottle on the table and two small metal cups which reminded me of Thailand. There was also a small plaque with a ME&U on the table, where you can download the app for your phone, order, pay and tip by yourself. We looked over the menu and chose a couple drinks, pear cider and a Lodt Shong Singapore. For appetizer we tried the Gai Satay (chicken) with peanut sauce and for entrees the Gai Padt Met Mamuang (cashew nut with chicken) with Steamed Jasmine Rice and Chilli Fried Rice (Vegetable & Tofu) spicy. Before college, Thai food was rarely a thing that I went for. It's one of those cuisines I enjoy but don't really make for myself for some reason, so going out for Thai is always a treat! When in Sydney, I decided that I just had to go for Asian food, since it seems to be much better than what I can find in Brisbane, so we decided on Chat Thai, a popular chain restaurant. The ambience is casual trendy, with a touch of Thai decor here and there. Their utensils, cups, etc. were Thai-styled, which I think is actually pretty cute. We were seated a bit closely to the tables next to us, which is my only complaint... We weren't too hungry and the dishes are fairly large, so we got a noodle dish, a meat dish, and sticky rice. It was already a lot of food! The noodles were really tasty - a bit on the salty side, but really delicious, with generous chunks of cha siu and Chinese kale. The noodles were also a bit too oily for my taste, but they were nevertheless a win. The service wasn't too bad for a really busy lunch, and the food was also satisfying. Pad Si Ew Jimmmmyyyyy Pretty much the same as the other Chat Thai I reviewed, ie really good but this one doesn't have seats. And man does it get busy. I ate at 5 to 12 and in five minutes the queue grew out the back. Very popular. read more

This food court version serves up more Isaan or Northern Thai style food compared to the restaurants which serve mainstream Thai. My dining partner and I ordered 2 different dishes but they came in the same broth. My boat noodle soup was a little disappointing. Quite small, not much noodles, only 3 fishcakes, fried pork belly and coriander. I gobbled it up quickly and could do with something extra for dinner. Three of us had: Singapore pandan coconut thingy with jellies to drink. Apparently this is an acceptable way to order this divine beverage - that you must try if you like coconut (I live to eat foods made with coconut). Red curry with duck and pineapple. I wasn't big on the pineapple or small green things in the soup. The curry taste had a lot of bite and was kind of lemongrassy. If I had snuck a can of coconut milk in to add I think it would have been perfect, though. Very good despite my nitpicking (red curry with x is possibly my all time favorite dish). The massaman curry with beef was so disappointing! I usually love massaman but this stuff was sweet! Yuck. Wasn't very curry tasting at all. The beef was done nice and tender but I didn't like the curry it was served with. Didn't touch it again after the first bite. The pad thai with chicken was very good, the noodles were primarily savory salty but got this interesting VERY subtle hint of sweet at the end of your bite. It was good. I wish I had more but I have a weakness for red curry and duck and when you combine those things it's over. I'd love to go back and try some other things, but there is a lot of Thai in Sydney. This used to be my favourite place to get freshly made to order Thai food in the CBD. Then for a period of time I thought I had lost it as the renovations began on the food court, But... now... it is back better than ever. If you have not been to the food court in the Victoria's Galleries, you should really check it out. It is now one of the classiest food courts in Sydney, with a nice range of options. But for now... back to the Thai food. I came to order the other day, and was stuffed. The menu is all (or at least 90%) in Thai. This would not have been a problem if I had seen Pad Krapow Pow on the menu, as I have been ordering basil chilli beef stir fry for years...! With my staple not there I frantically started using Google on my phone to search for translations. Finally I came across Raadt Naa, which it turns out is a Thai soup noodle with thick flat squarish noodles in a very rich broth. This is what I ended up ordering and it was awesome. If anything it was a bit too rich. Though being too rich did not stop me from finishing off every morsel.... So delicious! You should really try this place out..... but be ready to need a translator.... :-) read more

Chat Thai is my favorite Thai restaurant in Sydney. As same as other Chat Thai, this one is very busy especially during lunch time. I ordered Khao Soi that is very tasty, deep-fried crispy egg noodles and slow-cooked chicken in a curry-like sauce containing coconut milk and smoked chili oil. What a combination! Best Thai in Sydney. I normally go for the Som Tum, or Khao Soy (I think it is the only place in Australia that serves this Thai dish) I like coming to this branch because there is not much of a wait time compared to the other two Sydney branches. Granted this particular branch is more of a food court style where you order at the counter, take a buzzer, and pick up the food yourself. Unlike the others, no alcohol is served at this branch too if you are seeking a boozy lunch! The place starts to shut down around 5 or 6 though, so may not be ideal for dinner unless you don't mind an early dinner which may or may not be beneficial as they may have some leftover specials that they are giving away before close time. What more could you want than abundant flavour and delicious dishes at affordable prices? I only wish Chat Thai was closer in proximity to my home- but in a way it's also good that it's not (mainly because my addiction to Chat Thai would increase). The pad than might be a staple dish on every Thai menu, but at Chat Thai the dish is simply divine. The chicken is bursting with flavour. They must have some kind of special sauce! Despite being more a takeaway place, Chat Thai attracts a constant flow of customers who are devout worshipers of the joint (myself included). The Chat Thai owners have certainly cottoned on to a successful business model, with new venues popping up around Sydney! I can't wait to see what they do next! read more

The food was excellent. The Tom Yum Fried Rice was a huge hit. We ordered a second order because it was gone within minutes. The Lamb, prawns, papaya salad and mud crabs were all amazing as well. I got the five dollar deal for two dishes. Pretty mediocre and the staff wasn't very nice.

So far I've tried the khao soi (no 40 - egg noodles and braised chicken in a northern region coconut curry with smoked chilli oil) and the duck noodles in soup (no 36). The khao soi was pretty good but the duck noodles were kind of bland. I've tried the pad thai in the Westfield restaurant and I wasn't a fan of that either (too charred, not tangy enough). Some of the other dishes on the menu look quite good though so I may update my rating after I've tried more stuff. read more

HORRIFIC. Just 'ate' in Chat Thai in Manly Wharf, only to be laughed at by the manager when I said my food was horrible and I didn't want to pay for it. I ordered a noodle dish which came out gloopy and tasteless, gave it back to them straight away after taking just one bite. The manger then explained to me that's the way it's meant to taste...
