It feels part upscale restaurant, part members club, part bar, part swanky lounge. My favorite part is the fact that there are different areas with distinctly different seating and atmosphere. When you're stuck waiting for a delayed flight (or just arrived absurdly early in case of traffic), the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse will keep things from feeling stale. And the separate entrance/security lines? -Chef's kiss- I didn't make use of the spa treatments or Dom, but had a fabulous breakfast and strolled up to the rooftop garden for some sunshine before my transatlantic flight. Now that most airport lounges are filled to the gills and feature the saddest cafeteria-style food, this clubhouse is an oasis and could be a great model for future lounge differentiation. Though this ticket class is a once-in-a-long-while splurge, it made the price feel a little less insane.

I had the Crispy Seabass Thai dish - Pla Pad Prig Thai Orn. It was excellent. The skin was nice and crispy from start to finish. Letchworth was founded by Ebenezer Howard in 1906, and being a Quaker he forbade alcohol and pubs etc within the city limits. That is not common for Brits - who love their beers and gin and tonics!! On day 1 Mrs G went for a burger which she liked very much indeed, while I opted for the full English breakfast which was excellent! We both had juices (no booze!!) while on day 2 we both took the buttermilk pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. Rare in England and delicious. Service was outstanding, warm and friendly. The whole ambience was wonderful - families, friends, mums and babies groups. Bright, airy, spacious and in the warm weather a beautiful indoor/outdoor experience. "That'll be an extra 50p for the black pudding anyway" snapped back the young lady. Oh well, rules are rules I thought - I just want a breakfast. My partner opted for the vegetarian breakfast. Both breakfasts included toast. Mine also included a 'sausage patty' (this never arrived). Toast - well, in my experience this is usually delivered with butter. It didn't. I queried this with the charming young lady and she said "technically it doesn't come with butter". My response was "what - dry toast?" - answer : "did you actually ASK for butter?" Do you WANT butter?" Following my affirmative reply she turned heel and stomped off while my partner approached a far more amenable member of staff and secured some butter. When the charming young lady returned and I said we'd sorted the problem she rolled her eyes and again stomped off. So 20 quid for a mediocre breakfast but with free nastiness thrown in.
