My wife and I recently celebrated our 32 wedding anniversary and while we were in Boston we made reservations at the Chart House. I made reservations online and made reference to it being our anniversary. When we arrived they had printed replica menu celebrating our anniversary, presented us with an anniversary card and a VIP placard. It made the night very special. My wife ordered the swordfish which she commented that it was one of the best swordfish dishes she has ever had. I ordered the snapper Hemmenway and I was equally pleased, delicious! Staff was very informative and professional. Had the clam chowder. It was very good. Entree I had was the Prime rib, the Captain's cut, medium rare. It was outstanding. Cooked to perfection and I got the mushroom truffle butter. And that enhanced the flavor of the prime rib and it complimented well. If your in the Boston Long Wharf area, head to the Chart House. Pros: Great cocktails! Innovative and the servers actually know what they are serving! Great service! The staff knows the menu and definitely has a handle on the questions that the curious would ask! A few servers/helpers speak in Spanish to each other. For those who understand Spanish we know exactly what they are talking about :-) it's not a big deal. Service: a gentleman next to us complained that the portion for mashed potatoes was small. The server promptly got a another order of mashed for him..... The server asked us if we wanted an extra helping of ice cream to finish our lava cake! Cons Food is mediocre. I ordered king salmon -grilled and it was over done. I had asked their preference in cooking the fish to make sure it would be made right The desert was ok. The lava cake was a bit chewy which is a tell take for reheat.... The only restrooms are on the ground floor. So if you are seated 2-3 flights up then you need to prepare for the hike down and up. The AC on top of my table was leaking. My husband, Sister in Law and I went on a boat tour from Long Wharf and went to The Chart House for lunch today. The woman at the door was rude and informed my husband that we had to wait ten to twenty minutes for a table inside or outside. We said ok and asked if we could wait at the bar. The bartender took our order and escorted us to a table outside. The bartender was fabulous. The bartender was fabulous and escorted us to a table. While waiting, we watched the wait staff bring water to other tables including people who were seated after us. No one made eye contact with us and completely ignored us. Understanding that establishments are understaffed we waited patiently for around 30 minute. We watched a group of people sit down at the table in front of us. They were given water glasses immediately and their order was taken. No one approached our table. We then got up and went inside to the bartender to pay for our drinks and explained why we were leaving. He was very apologetic and did not accept our payment for the drinks, two beers and one water. I tipped him even though he refused. The one star is for him. It pains me to say this, If you are a person of color, think twice before going to this establishment. There is a fundamental problem with the management of this restaurant. Perhaps because they rely on people coming for special occasions or one-time tourists, they do not care at all about their customers. There is no consequence for them if they don't think the customer will come back. I arrived with my in-laws for a 7pm reservation. We were not seated until 7:52. Our drinks did not arrive until 8:45, 1 hour and 45 minutes after our reservation. Further problems ensued with the timing of the food. No apologies from the manager. We were not comped for anything. I can understand a glitch in planning in terms of the reservations and the flooded bar, which was the excuse for the late drinks, but how many things can go wrong in one night without there being some larger systematic problem with this establishment? If the restaurant cared at all about their business, they would have, at the very least, offered a free round of drinks to keep everyone in good spirits. They did not care. The waiter was nice, but it was apparent that he was trying to get through a rough night. If you have a special occasion, make sure to avoid this restaurant. If you have a lot of time to burn, especially if you want to wait outside in the cold and then wait a lot longer for every portion of your meal and pay top dollar for poor treatment, this is the place for you. read more

I was seriously disappointed with the fact that we were seated in the third floor loft on Saturday when the restaurant was pretty empty when we had a 4 pm reservation. I am 64 and handicapped and the rest rooms are only located on the first floor. I also felt bad for our server that had to carry everything up the stairs which we realized slowed everything down as we received our apps even before drinks. On the way out I let the hostess know that I was not happy with being seated up in the nosebleed seats. I will not return to this location again. read more

We dropped in for lunch around 2 after we visited the aquarium. We sat at a high top table at the bar- the bartender was very nice and helpful. I got a salad and my fiancé got a roast beef sandwich with fries- all yummy. There are lots of different things to choose from ranging from sandwiches to salads and tons of seafood. Came for dinner with friends who were visiting from out of town. This was my first time at the chart house and it will be my last. The service was terrible right off the bat, with the hostess ignoring us while trying to get seated, our waitress rolling our eyes at us, and our food arriving late. The food was disappointing. The spinach and artichoke dip was the only genuinely good dish we had all night. The king salmon was bland, the mahi was clearly old, and my boyfriend's carbonara looked like it had been sitting out for hours. He found rotten peas in his dish and the lobster tasted like rubber. The drinks are also way overpriced, with $20+ markup for just about everything. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

While in Boston on a vacation day, we went to Chart House for lunch. The menu was great, service was better, and the "lunch box" was the best. We had no problem getting seated, and the interesting part was the venue was once a warehouse for John Hancock. This was the perfect finish for the Freedom Tour that we had just done. One word: underwhelming. I've been to other Chart House locations and this one is by far the most disappointing. The building itself is arranged strangely - there are three floors of seating all with different table arrangements and various levels of air conditioning. We were seated on the third floor which was a little quieter than the second, but the air was a bit too warm and the views were mediocre at best. The window behind our table was extremely dirty, we could hardly see through it. Service was slow but that was mainly because the servers had to run up and down the stairs carrying food and drink orders because the main kitchen is on the second floor. I was going to order a second drink with my meal but by the time our waitress got to our table we had all finished eating so there wasn't any point. The food was just ok. My salmon was overdone and the seasonal scallop and shrimp dish we ordered was overcooked as well - very disappointing. My seasonal cocktail was very lacking in the alcohol department, but the most disappointing was the dessert. The boston cream pie was ok, but the creme brulee trio we tried was just unappetizing. The flavors weren't listed so I decided to take a chance and try them...the chef must have been cleaning out the kitchen because the flavors we got were: vanilla, beet and sweet corn. The vanilla was good, not great, but the other two were just gross and honestly a sour way to end a mediocre meal. I have no plans to go back to Chart House anytime soon - there are so many other great seafood options in the area, this just isn't worth the time or money. read more

I never usually feel compelled to write a review, but my experience at Chart House was so negative that I felt compelled to share my experience. I went last Saturday night with some girlfriends for my birthday dinner before going out for the night. Our reservation was at 7:45pm. From the moment we sat at our table, our waiter did not seem pleased to have us in his section. Ilir, our waiter, took our drink order and left - not a very friendly encounter but also not mean or aggressive. He came back a while later and asked if we wanted any apps. Our drinks still had not arrived. He asked if we wanted to be all on one bill (there were 8 of us total) and I figured it would be easiest for just one bill. He seemed very annoyed at this, which was surprising and odd. Our apps came before our drinks arrived. Meanwhile, our water glasses were never refilled and we were not offered refills on our rolls. After over an hour of a wait for our drinks, we politely brought it to the attention of a manager. Our waiter returned to let us know what he was sorry for the wait but it "wasn't his fault". He refilled our water at this point, but this was the only time they were refilled the whole night. Our drinks finally came, but half of them were warm. I observed Ilir and his interactions with other tables. To these customers, he was extremely friendly and chatty - even laughing at times. However, any time he came to our table he seemed annoyed. At one point the manager came over to talk to us, and with her a few of us ordered a round of espresso martinis. These came out relatively quick. The food was delicious and all of our orders were correct. I have no complaints about the food. At the end of the dinner, the manager came by again to offer us comped dessert or another round of espresso martinis. All of us were full and we had now been there for over 2 hours, so we declined the dessert and asked if the round of espresso martinis that we had already ordered could be comped instead. The waiter seemed very annoyed at this request. When we got the bill, nothing was comped. After we received the final bill and paid, my friend's credit card was not returned. We asked Ilir about this, and he acted very strange. He reached into his apron and pulled out a laundry card and a lighter and put it on our table. He then walked away and after digging around in his apron, came back with my friends card. This was alarming. Overall, I'm very disappointed for the way we were treated from the beginning. Even after getting the manager involved, it didn't seem like much was done to try to improve our experience. It set a negative tone for my birthday night, which is very upsetting. read more

Walked in on a Saturday afternoon. Went straight to 2 open seats at the inside bar and there was no wait. We sat right beside the drink ticket printer and watched one bartender sit on the computer swiping cards and the other bartender making well drinks from the tickets coming in from the printer right next to us. Both bartenders made eye contact with us multiple times and said nothing. We sat there for 15 minutes with no acknowledgement from anyone that worked there. Had a reservation and were asked to go to the bar to wait and were greeted with a bar tender telling us it would be a while before we got a drink (it was not that busy). We got the three course pre-fix and were there for over 2 and a half hours because it took so long to get our food, which was greasy. We ordered a steak medium rare and it came raw, asked for a fry wine and were given the sweetest wine it was in drinkable. Service was horrible, I cannot NOT recommend this place enough. I recommend going to the Chart House for a very good meal at a reasonable cost, in a very nice setting, as well as for the free and convenient valet parking. I like the fact that the Chart House menu is so helpful with showing calorie counts, and flexible portion sizes. One should have moderate expectations, however, about the overall dining experience. The service has been consistently just OK my last two visits. Last night, at least we did not have to reconstruct with the Manager, after dinner, what we ate in order to get a coherent bill. However, it took a good 15 minutes for a bottle of sparkling water to make its way to our table; a glass of wine arrived only after my wife was well into her appetizer; my steak knife arrived when I was nearly halfway through my filet, using my table knife. The Mens room had no hand towels or electric hand towels, and so one had to resort to drying one's hands with toilet paper. The dining experience is far from unsatisfactory; I just would not go there expecting the overall exceptional experience that one might have come to expect from other restaurant venues. read more

It was Boston restaurant week so we decided to go check out charter house. I've read the previous review of service but our waiter was excellent. Maybe the restaurant had read the previous reviews and fixed the problem. The Kim chee calamari had a great presentation but it was a little greasy and lacked calamari. It was mostly deep fried vegetables. It tasted ok. The clam chowder was delicious. I would recommend it again and again. And the caesar salad was on point. The chicken Romano was delicately fried. Everyone enjoyed their meal thoroughly & their experience here. We especially enjoyed them preparing our lobsters in front of us! They have a gluten free menu for those who need it as well. The Chart House is charming and has great atmosphere. I sat at a high top in the bar area. We ordered the Ahi Tuna which was very good as was the sautéed Boston Cod. The service was sorely lacking however. The barmaid/server was mostly interested in visiting with a couple at the bar. We waited over 70 minutes for our meal. Food came out in a decent amount of time but we were eating on a weeknight around 8:30. Clam chowder was very good and flavorful. I had lobster stuffed scrod and it was kind of like a crab cake style stuffing but with large pieces of lobster. Very pleased with the dish. We also had the oysters and they were very fresh. 2 stars for service - Waited 10 minutes at the hostess stand outside before we got any attention. Three servers saw us standing there and chose to ignore us. Once we finally got seated, service continued to be slow. It was a slow Thursday afternoon with the outside patio about half full with 3 servers taking orders. This should not have caused any delay. I felt more like we were being discrimated against. But on to the food. 4 stars for food - I ordered the clam chowder, my husband got the lobster bisque and we split a lobster roll. The clam chowder was pretty good, I tasted the lobster bisque, which was good too but I liked mine better. However the real star was the lobster roll. It had huge chunks of lobster in a buttery roll and it was huge enough to split between us. It was our first bowl of chowder and lobster roll of many on our trip to Boston and we were not disappointed with the food, only the service. read more

I went to the Chart house last night for dinner. My boyfriend and I were seated on the top floor. The ambiance is lovely but there is definitely a delay in service due to servers having to go up and down the stairs. The drinks were good. My steak was undercooked, I ordered medium well and it came out bloody. I ate as much as I could before being completely turned off by it. *one thing to note* we were the only Black customers/couple on the floor. Every single table had a candle but ours. We asked or server Dave if we could have one and he said sure then returned without it and never mentioned it again. Just a small misstep or a micro aggression, it's hard to say. We eventually grabbed one from a neighboring table when the people sitting there left. The drinks, salad, and dessert were good, steak, salmon and mash were not. Disappointed in Boston. Selected the Chart House in Boston based on their national reputation. Unfortunately this Chart House leaves much to be desired. The initial round of drinks arrived with seltzer water instead of tonic in mixed drinks. Next, after a significant amount of time, we had to request our bread for the table - several surrounding tables seated after us already had received theirs. Once we ordered, salads never arrived. Entrees reflected the incorrect meat temperature with one returned, and our asparagus side was prepared with bread crumbs instead of butter as ordered. A new prime rib with the correct temperature was provided, however the corrected replacement side of asparagus was never served. Overall, the dinners were mediocre at best. Mashed potatoes were not creamy and creamed spinach appeared to have been under a heat lamp. When the bill arrived, some items not served were still present on the bill and a three-course meal with salad missing were subsequently billed at full price. When a member of our party mentioned the multiple failures to our server, she became defensive and upset although no personal comments were made. Finally, we requested to speak with a manager. He was apologetic and provided a complimentary credit which did not even cover a round of drinks. This was an example of poor leadership and indicates how this Chart House values its customers - or doesn't. read more

Valentines Day dinner at the chart house. They greeted us at the door with a beautiful rose, were very welcoming to our slight delayed arrival time. Restaurant was packed, they were serving a special Valentines Day couple menu or their full regular menu. Restaurant was packed, but upstairs was beautiful with a huge lofted seating space. Seafood selections were a plenty, steak and chicken options also available for the non-seafood lovers (me). We started with drinks, huge wine menu and a special cocktail menu that appears to be rotating. They also have a large selection of beers. Appetizer menu consists of many seafood favorite bites, including clams, oysters, calamari, etc. We had the calamari, with sauce on the side as our waiter mentioned it was pretty spicy (it was!). Calamari was very good. Main courses we decided on steak (NY strip) and Live Maine Lobster. The lobster was cooked and arrived to our table intact, which was then personally cracked by our waiter at the table (coolest part of the night!). The lobster was said to be good, steak was well cooked but could have added some additional seasoning. Overall, meal was good. We also had Asian green beans (okay, a little soft) and asparagus (very good, very much recommend). Overall, meal was great. We had a great experience. Tables next to us had some issues with bills and undercooked steak, but our service and meal was excellent. 4/5 stars! read more

4 stars for a chain restaurant... Yeah, whoda thunkit? Came here on a rare day off to meet the hubs for lunch after taking the little one to the aquarium. I actually chose it because it's restaurant week but with my pregnancy brain I totally forgot that it was so we didn't do the prix fixe. But in my defense, they didn't offer a special menu for it when we sat down. I honestly would have never chosen it otherwise. Oh well. Nice location and cool, old building. Some of the decor is a little "hotel-y" but overall good vibe, right on the water. We sat up on the second floor so we had nice views. Our service was exceptional and I presume that it was our assigned waiter. The other staff didn't look quite as attentive so I guess we got lucky. They're actually quite kid friendly too. They had a kids menu with crayons as most chains do but I guess I wasn't expecting much since they're more of an upscale eatery. Our waiter was super patient as we waited for hubs to arrive. He gave great recommendations, including the lobster stuffed scrod which is a great deal to get for lunch. We really liked this dish! I got the ménage soup which is 3 soups in 2oz portions each. Loved tasting each of them. Chowder was full of yummy clam and we were both surprised at how much we liked the gazpacho. Lobster bisque was not bad but not our favorite and it's usually my go to so glad I got the trio instead of just a bowl of one thing. He also recommended the lobster and crab spring roll appetizer which I got with my soups. I might not get this again. It's actually a summer roll since it has a rice paper wrapping. Something about the combo of filling ingredients didn't do it for me. Might be the noodle, maybe I'm just traditional and like vermicelli rice noodles in my summer rolls. I like how much seafood is in it though. I didn't really like the sauces either actually. There was some spicy mayo on the plate as garnish which I preferred over the chili and soy sauces. The hot chocolate lava cake sounded so good but too indulgent for lunch. Tempted to go back for dinner to try it haha, but not like you can't get a lava cake elsewhere. More than I would spend for lunch but it was nice to get out and change it up. Enjoyed our time there which made the day memorable, so of course I have to give it good remarks! read more
