Found on the street level of Pike Place Market -- mere yards away from flinging fish -- is a…read morevoluminous amount of colorful, hilarious, kitschy animation artwork seemingly from someone like me, a child of the late '70s and early '80s, enmeshed in the pop culture of the time. The artist behind It's Just Art is known as "Mr. Dan."
You'll find plenty Star Wars. There's the familiar]: Princess Leia next to the emblazoned, graffiti-style words "Don't Call Me Princess", Han Solo "Never Tell Me the Odds", and Yoda's "Do or Do Not, There is No Try." There are hilarious plays on words: An Ewok with "May the Forest be With You", a stoned out Chewbacca with the phrase "What Happens on Endor, Stays on Endor", and a Stormtrooper next to "Got Droids?"
There are also a cavalcade of other 80s flicks in Mr Dan's works: Gremlins, Back to the Future, Harry & the Hendersons (!), Better Off Dead, Teen Wolf, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Big Trouble in Little China, Karate Kid, and E.T. (just to name some).
My favorite is his "Opening Night" series, with various pop culture icons waiting in line for movies: Seth MacFarlane characters, Matt Groening characters, Mr. T, the Goonies, Jessica Rabbit, Alf, Beetlejuice, Freddy Krueger, Jason, Bruce Lee, Hello Kitty, Marty McFly, and a whole bunch of others. Who's lined up where ... and at what movies? Well, you'll have to see for yourself!
Get yourself back to 1976 ... at the Pike Place Market!
