A pleasant surprise! Ordered a combination of enchilada and taco! Carne Asada enchilada, which was a cheese enchilada with perfectly grass fed beef on top! Wow. Different and good. I was door dashing today, and I was sent to CharroVida for an order. I immediately loved the energy. A mixed crowd of younger and older people enjoying the patio , tables inside , and the bar. They had football on the TV's...and of course I love that. I especially liked the non pretentious feel...just come as you are and enjoy. There are old stoves and ovens for people to look at when you walk in. Kind of like a little antique store vibe...really cool. Then I saw it was owned by the lady who owns El Charro! I remember meeting her years ago...and she was gracious and certainly a presence. So when I was done dashing , I had to stop in. I LOVE this place. The staff are friendly. Chris helped me when I was picking up the order, and he said hi when I was there afterwards. Ok, the menu. AH- MAY-ZING! Fresh twists on Mexican, geared towards healthy lifestyles. Also an amazing selection of complete protein choices for vegans....vegetarians ...and anyone who loves perfectly prepared food. Jackfruit is prepared to perfection here! I ordered the Brussel sprouts, and a Bowl with medium rare grass fed beef. ( I am a carnivore , but much less often now a days). Served Dairy with Severe Allergy!!!! I ordered Soup with VEGAN cheese and it was regular cheese! I told the server I have a Dairy Allergy when I ordered! There was someone new in the Kitchen and the server was very good. I get very ill for days with dairy and the entire Staff needs to understand this is critically important! Also The soup was luke warm! I sent it back, was barely warm, and no Shrimp in it like I ordered! So I gave up! Charrovida was my favorite restaurant and go to a few years ago and i am sadly watching it go downhill! Last 2 Meals were disappointing! AMAZING. Yes you must try CharroVida! They have a cute patio in the front but you can also be seated inside. My friend is Vegan and she highly recommended this restaurant. They have non-vegan food as well such as chicken tacos, enchiladas and chimis. Shareables: We ordered the Nachos Vida which were delicious! Definitely enough for 2 people. Nice space... went for a mid-afternoon lunch. There seemed to be only one employee really present and she had her hands full. No host, no manager? Tried the grilled chicken enchiladas. Chicken was still cold from being grilled prior and then put in a fridge to dry out. The beans and rice were 75% of the plate and the actual enchiladas were tiny. Well this family is on a roll opening up all these great restaurants. He said they are not done yet, either, and that's good for Tucson. We had the guacamole hummus appetizer and it was pretty good. Comes with home made corn chips and some dried? fried? plantain slices. My wife had street tacos and she gave me a bite--delish! I had a Vida bowl with half grain and half greens. I also opted for the steak and salmon and my sides were the Brussels sprouts and the cauliflower. Very delicious! The Brussels were lightly crisply on the outside. How do they do that? The cauliflower was seasoned and very tasty. Friends had an enchilada + taco plate and a Vida burrito. They both enjoyed it very much. The salsas are great. There was one that was orange-ish in color and was really tasty. This is not a cheap place, but well worth it. Very nice atmosphere. The waitress really knew her stuff. There are so many decisions you have to make with almost each entrée and I jokingly said it was an interrogation. It will help if you check out the menu before you come so that you have some idea of what to expect. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Tucson-top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. As big fans of El Charro, we were very excited to try CharroVida. We arrived around 11:30, so just after the morning rush (keep in mind). Restaurant was pretty empty, but still waited around 15-20 minutes. Got coffee about 25 minutes into sitting down, even with the restaurant pretty dead. Around 40 minutes into sitting down, we decided to order chips and salsa, then got our food about 15 minutes later. Asked for no cilantro, got cilantro. The food was pretty good, but cold. Overall, giving this a 2.5, food was good not great, server was nice but never checked in on us, and the operation of the restaurant that didn't seem short staffed, and wasn't busy, was confusing and disappointing. Never got checked on, never got water refills. In the end, tried to flag down the server twice for a check, and waited 10 min for him to notice us. Keep in mind this is with maybe 5 other tables in the restaurant, and 3 other servers- which is what lead me to leave a review. read more

I wasn't able to get her name, but this young woman with this ginger hair was running with fire under her feet, and was on top of it all night! Also, when we called her over in the middle of her duties, she ran right over with a bright smile and helped us without a complaint. Well, my son said it's been five years since we last visited this place (time flies)! Today we had lunch here and it reminded me of how good their food truly is! walked in first time Monday MLK day. A client gave me a gift card so thought I'd try. roughly 1pm and even though I despise this reference, "I'm in the business" i do actually run a resort . That being said, i saw a rush on holiday no one expected (normal!) paired its understaffed for the time period. Veronica, running the bar and assuming some level of mgmt handling bar, service bar for about 70 % occupancy, to go's, making phones, etc... anyway....calm, and cool, great attitude and didn't over apologize but handled all professionally and we all, "got it" just by her demeanor. I try diligently to have HR find these type of people, kudos to yall for training and when you read this, thank her for her service. I'll be back solely due to her. Keep it up! read more

I have been meaning to try this place for quite some time but living on the southeast side, I don't get over to this area too often. Met friends for dinner here recently and enjoyed my experience! The restaurant is clean, welcoming and serves up some delicious healthy side eating. We ordered the jackfruit taquitos for an appetizer, the diablo tacos (with grilled shrimp), and a massive Vida burrito. Everything was bursting with flavor. We also tried the el maestro margarita which was spicy and delicious. The service was a bit off, hence the four stars. While our server was very nice and friendly, she kept forgetting stuff that we asked for. The appetizer ended up coming at the end of the meal as she had completely forgotten it. We needed water and could not get her attention to get some. We had to ask for the bill twice when we were finished. Perhaps they were short staffed. read more

This is my second time coming here and I desperately want to love this restaurant. Charro Cafe is simply delicious but this restaurant under the same family company didn't live up to the same standards and fell flat in other ways. There are a lot of unique options to choose from, Ive opted for the Vida bowels both times which seems like the perfect option for a good tasting healthy meal. This most recent time I ordered the jackfruit carnitas as my base and came out tasting quite acidic and the jackfruit was a bit starchy (and I usually love jackfruit meal options). The base flavor dominated the meal and found myself not really enjoying the flavors. The vegetable sides including the fajitas and Brussels sprouts were tasty, were a bit over roasted and some Brussel sprouts were a bit burnt on the outside. Did enjoy their prickly pear lemonade, quite tart but I preferred it this way! Not sure I'll be back soon but hoping I just happened to catch them on an off night. The plant-based menu is a paradise for people whose eating preference is vegetation or vegan. It features Beyond Meat and Just Egg plant-based products. The menu is inspired by native Sonoran cuisine and a healthy Mediterranean diet. Charro Vida is great for brunch, dinner, or happy hour. My favorite brunch item are the chilaquiles with Just Egg and plant-based chorizo. I've tried their tamales, burritos, and tacos but my favorite item for dinner is a vida bowl because of its customization and it's a little bit of everything. You choose the base of your bowl, greens or grains, a protein, and two sides. As highly as I rcommend their food and advocate for their mission, I must say I've been disappointed by their service. On two occasions the elapsed time between ordering and receiving food was unacceptable which required getting the attention of a waiter working a different table. I gave them the benefit of the doubt but the third time was not the charm. I ordered at the bar but was informed by a table waiter that because of the shift change the bar was not being attended by a bartender. I offered to sit at a table to make it easier on their staff but they insisted I stay but it did not improve for 30 minutes. read more

This is my first experience here, since I'm on my third day visiting Tucson. It's my second experience with restaurants being vegan-friendly in Tucson in two days, so it's a good sign for visiting or living here as a vegan or vegetarian. I ordered a basic Vida Burrito with vegan cheese and no extra protein items; black beans are already part of the burrito and I felt it was all quite sufficient. In fact... It's absolutely fantastic. Or it was; I just finished it a minute ago! It's loaded with stuff; dense. Well worth the price I paid. The tortilla is also toasted on the bottom of the wrap to hold it together, a nice touch I've not seen elsewhere yet, adding a nice toasty taste to the already yummy wrap. I did takeout so I have no comments about the wait staff. The people up front were perfectly nice despite me feeling awkward and dumb today (too hungry, not enough deep sleep, sigh). I hope I didn't irritate anyone It seemed to be fairly peaceful for restaurants; not loud, but that was just up front. There was a bench to sit at to wait, and outdoor seating. While every dish on their menu is available vegan, they are also available with meat options and gluten free. I had tacos and chose the jackfruit filling birria style. It was had to tell that it wasn't beef. A couple weeks ago, I was there with some friends on a Saturday when they have a brunch menu from 10-3. This is the usual disclaimer that I rarely write reviews... But I have to write a review for this amazing restaurant! I have grown up in Tucson and I know the Charro family of restaurants quite well. However, I only discovered Charro Vida a few days ago and have eaten there twice in three days! Please check out their website and the links to the articles written about them. This restaurant is using very fresh ingredients and as many as they can get locally. Surprise: they also feature amazing vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. The staff are extremely well trained, attentive, informative, and do everything they can to make sure that your meal is a success. They also do not hesitate to make recommendations based upon your preferences -- I tried things both times I would not have initially ordered and loved both!! I also appreciate that the background music is just that: background. It didn't cause any problems for a table of four to converse without raising our voices. The tables are not jammed together so there is a great feeling of privacy without losing a sense of coziness at the same time. Please check this restaurant out! It is neither "traditional" Mexican food nor so far afield as to be unrecognizable as Mexican food! I highly recommend the corn and green pepper tamales, the sides of mushrooms and street corn; table-side guacamole ... and I even love their hottest salsa, the habanero (tho the two milder ones are tasty as well). We went here during COVID and they ticked all the right boxes immediately, masks, very social distant seating, compliant cleaning and air filtering and sanitizer. As a flexitarian who rarely eats meat going with someone who loves meat, we were both in heaven. The base product is all plant based with a variety of plant based protein and animal protein additions. We had the mini hemp chimichangas which were perfectly fried, no oily, nice heat and flavor. The guacamole with it was chunky, acidic, with a lovely flavor. For our main course we had a combination plate with a jackfruit birria taco, vegetable and vegan cheese enchiladas, whole white beans and vida rice. While the entire dish was vegan the meat eater loved it! The flavors were amazing, slightly Smokey, with a bit of heat, balanced with some citrus acid. You could taste the ingredients and they celebrated the plants versus trying to emulate meat. The other dish was the vegan enchiladas with grass fed steak. The steak was char grilled with lime and cilantro and its smokiness complimented the enchiladas perfectly. For desert we had pumpkin spice hemp horchata and vegan pumpkin spice churros. The horchata was a spicy delicious version of other horchatas but not as sweet. Likewise the churros were light, not overly sweet and perfectly fried so not oily.
