Thompson’s Grill & Market - Friday night special. Steak & shrimp

You order at the counter up front, pay your bill, they hand you a table-stand number and you seat yourself. It's also up to you to retrieve your drinks, silverware and napkins. As this was our first visit since it opened, we weren't sure what to expect, but I really wanted to give it a try. There aren't often "new" restaurants opening in town, and the only previous dealings we'd had with the business was purchasing really nice prime rib roasts. Honestly, that part is what bumped this review from 3 to 4 stars, because I was a little let down by the food once in was delivered to our table. Maybe it was just an off night, but both my dad and I ordered that night's steak special, a riff on surf & turf that was just so-so. We both ordered our steak medium, but at best, the steaks were cooked to med-well to well done. The shrimp was ok- just your basic breaded shrimp. The steamed veggies were pleasant, but ironically, the stars on the plate were the grilled bread and the mashed potatoes. My wife ordered the club sandwich, which was clumsy to hold and eat because of how it was constructed. She had to un-stack part of it just to be able to take a bite! I mean, it's a generous portion, but you'd practically have to unhinge your jaw to take a single bite! Thompson's also works as a sort of butcher shop and small grocery store, with fresh cuts of beef displayed in a cooler counter, along with some prepared dishes ready to take-and-bake at home. I was also delighted to see some products from KC Canning Company in their small grocery section. I feel like they may be trying too hard to be all things to everyone, which lessens their ability to do things really, really well. We will likely give them another try next time we visit. I hope they get their own sign up - as one side still displays the former restaurant's name. I'd advise ordering your steak medium rare. They also have a full bar featuring craft beer, wine and cocktails. Maybe a nice cocktail menu would help to draw folks in. Nothing fancy...just do some basic, classic cocktails (think old fashioned, manhattan, cosmopolitan, margarita, that sort of vibe). I wish them much success in the future!

The restaurant didn't have some items I saw on the website displayed in their menu which was disappointing. Thankfully I decided to ask about it and they said they could totally do it. We're a large family so it was a lot of food but they got the order correct and it came out fairly quickly. The Spicy Jack grilled chicken sandwich with fries and the blueberry lemon shake. My family also tried a few different burgers, pretty sure all the shake flavors, chicken strips and the classic chicken sandwich. Everything tasted really good. Prices are comparable to other restaurants that are similar. We would definitely stop again.

They're not just fries--they're golden, corrugated, socially ambitious little carb ladders. They shimmer with a crispy audacity. They vibrate with salty enthusiasm. And the ice cream? Oh. The ice cream is a frosty spiral of dairy mysticism. A glacial, velvety cloud-sculpture. It's suspiciously serene, like it pays taxes and meditates. It stands there in its swirly elegance, cold and judgmentally smooth, radiating creamy composure. When you dip a fry into that polar vortex of sweetness, it creates a scandalous, sugary-saline alliance that feels illegal in at least seven emotional states. The crunch. The chill. The existential harmony. It's chaotic. It's creamy. It's aggressively comforting. It's not just fries and ice cream. It's a crispy-velvet paradox. A crunchy arctic romance. A snack that stares into your soul and says, "Yes. This is the correct timeline."

Apparently serving paying customers a few minutes before closing was too much to ask. My reply to the owner... Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, your response reinforces the concerns I expressed in my original review. Rather than addressing the customer experience, you chose to dismiss it by focusing on the time we arrived and by implying that my review was the result of me "needing a great day." That kind of sarcasm does not reflect the level of professionalism customers should expect from a business owner. You stated that you personally saw us enter at 9:40 PM and that the kitchen had already closed at 9:30 PM. However, I take accuracy seriously, and I do not appreciate being misrepresented. I have a screenshot documenting the time I left your establishment, which directly contradicts the timeline presented in your response. If the facts are important enough for you to publicly defend your business, they should also be important enough to present truthfully. To be clear, businesses have every right to establish kitchen hours and closing procedures. Had the situation simply been explained professionally and courteously, my review likely would have reflected that. What stands out is not the policy itself, but the way concerns were handled afterward. I travel extensively throughout the United States and internationally, reviewing small family-owned businesses because I genuinely enjoy supporting them. In many cases, when an owner responds thoughtfully and demonstrates a commitment to customer service, I am willing to reconsider or update a review. In this case, however, instead of leaning into customer service and understanding, you chose to defend, justify, and direct sarcasm toward a customer. I can accept mistakes. What I have a much harder time accepting is dishonesty. The screenshot of the time I left your establishment speaks for itself. I wish you and your business the best, but I stand by my review. To make matters worse, we had a similar experience elsewhere in Sterling when a Sonic employee snapped at us for trying to place an order. Thankfully, Village Inn restored a little faith in customer service with friendly staff, welcoming patrons, and genuine hospitality. If you're traveling through town, don't expect Parts and Labor to go out of its way for customers. We were in and out in under a minute--with nothing but a bad impression to take with us.
