This places stays open late. I think they are open until like 1 or 2am. So, if you find yourself hungry late at night this is your place to go. Initially it looked sketchy but it's not. Not sure on the restaurant itself, but the taco truck that operates in the restaurant parking lot late at night is the best Taqueria in Kansas City bar none. Even better, it's open crazy late even during the week. They are generous with taco meat and toppings, and the prices really good considering the quality and amount. This should definitely be your go to for late night tacos, assuming you don't mind being on the Avenue late (I ve never had issues, but they are a block down from By The Pound which is sketchy as heck and has a lot of late night loiters) read more

The table service includes complimentary chips and a mild salsa. The salsa was just okay. My steak taco was very good. The meat was tasty, but I missed the many options of a toppings bar. Ah, Independence Avenue with its colorful street posters encouraging exploration and tourism up and down the lowly boulevard that serves mostly as a connector between other destinations. How's that tourism thing working out? Note to those responsible for those signs whom I assume are property owners seeking gentrification in order to increase the prices of their properties: other than Mexico and very, very few African joints, mostly Halal, get your countries and continents straight. No Australian eateries, sorry, nor South America that I've ever seen. Hint: Mexico and South America are not the same. Believe there's one single Asian food place occupying a lonely vacated storefront on the far East end and how much longer it's there, no telling. Nope, it's still the home of poor people and mostly fine food, 95% of it or more, Mexican, and certainly the city's most visible burgeoning food truck mecca. There are destinations here that are simply spectacular. Best kept food secret in KCMO. But I digress, me, apparently the 15th white Yelper to review Charritos. In my never ending quest to try every restaurant on Independence Ave. between I-435 and Brooklyn, I found myself here parked in front of a massive Carne Asada plate, and it was fine, mostly. The steak was flavorful and had a good sear, lots of flavor, hint of just the right amount of pepper, though a tad tough. A lowly cut elevated nicely. The rice and beans commendable, but the sauces... dreadful. The red, bland and mostly tomato with nary a hint of jalapeno, cilantro, onion, salt or anything else good going on. The green sauce, apparently from the same creator. Mexican grandmothers are rolling over in their graves. The chips on the table a tip of the hat to U.S. expectations. Not a bad thing I guess. Oh, but the onions on top done to perfection: juicy and flavorful, accompanied by a few corn tortillas that had been wrapped up a tad long. The lone dollop of guacamole on the plate, hint of brown/gray from sitting too long or not enough lemon or lime juice added. The interior is uninspiring, not an unpredictable factor when you're next door to a check cashing facility and a second hand store. Cleanliness... sketchy, and the strangest located light for the men's restroom in recent memory. Don't ask. But if the food is good, I can live with most of this. In an area with a lot of very good competition, the food here is OK, but not great, and there is great within a mile multiple times. My being the only diner over lunch on a Tuesday does not bode well for their future. I hope they're hopping at night but have to wonder. Bonus points for "horn" listed as one of the taco options. Thanks, I'll pass, but five stars to the graphic designer than attempted to translate. Third time I've come. Everything we have tried had always been really yummy, fast, hot, very nice service and good ambiance for the Mexican restaurants in the avenue. Came here with my brother the first time 4 months ago, came in another time for breakfast, and today. I will post a review and pictures of the first visit later...today as per our tradition we ordered 3 things to split: enchiladas, flautas, carne asada. The carne was so tasty, with cactus, raja, avocado, rice, beans and hot tortillas... the enchiladas had a yummy green sauce, r & b and the barbacoa flautas (5 per order) came in crispy, with a lovely serving of avocado. This is the first restaurant that we actually go to for a second time (both my brother and I) for our monthly brunches... so yes, we like it, and we think it should get more business because it would be a shame if it were to close. read more

Charritos is a nice stop along Independence Avenue for Mexican food. The steak tacos are good, but lacking in options for toppings like you would find at most places with street tacos. This is more of a sit down restaurant with a vast menu. The salsa wasn't a favorite. Service was super friendly. Charrito's is a small Mexican resturant located in Old Northeast. I have been a patron of this esablishment for at least 15 years. I am a taco snob. Honestly, few Mexican resturants have "great" tacos. The beef often has a grainy texture that I cannot stand, but this place has wonderful beef! My favorites include and are not limited to, enchilada's, beef tacos, steak tacos, pork tacos, quesadilla sinchronizada, any of the burrito spreads, chimichanga and the sauce... The mild sauce has a great flavor, not the best I have ever had, but very tasty and the hot sauce is fire...true fire...Love it! Ten years ago, the cheese in the enchilada's got me through my pregnancy....otherwise, I am sure I would have gone insane! Really interesting food at this place. They offer a number of homey Mexican classics like posole, menudo, and dinner plates of grilled meat, rice, beans and vegetables. The two salsas that come with your homemade tortilla chips are both phenomenal. One is a red chile based sauce, the other incorporates a roasted poblano and is quite a bit spicier. I had some chicken enchiladas verdes topped with a fried egg that were pretty good. The chicken was definitely cooked whole and picked off the bone which I love to see. The Tacos Aztecas were fantastic: Large pieces of grilled skirt steak with grilled spring onions, cactus, roasted jalepenos and avocado. The tamales are terrible. Gritty, and the pork smelled off. Considering how good everything else was this was quite a surprise, but true. So true. They serve fountain soda with little or no ice here. Not sure why. read more

This is just a preliminary review cuz i definitely plan on coming back here again and trying more stuff. I just moved here from San Diego and have been looking for a place to get my mexican-food fix in the area. This place so far seems like the best candidate. Ordered: Flautas Plate + Enchiladas+Taco Combination plate Price: ~$12 + $10 Ambiance: Like most mexican restaurants, you have colorful lime-y walls and your standard cheap restaurant tables and chairs. They seem to have a separate stand for serving aquas frescas and let me tell you, it is the real deal! Homemade horchata using real rice and not the cheap powder stuff, awesome! The counter also had a glass display case holding some hispanic candies such as lucas although they recently starting putting in CD/DVDs? Service: Service was as it should be, got seated quickly, chips and salsa on the table, responsive waitress, no complaints here at all. We asked for some chips to take home with us at the end of the meal and they didn't charge us a dime, these guys aren't trying to be stingy. Food: MmmmHhh what can I say. The chips and salsa were scrumptious! The chips were large and crunchy but easily melted away in your mouth leaving you wanting more, this gave it a very fresh-out-of-the-oven feel. The salsas were flavorful and full-bodied with the perfect level of spice, I practically got full just from the chips. Then my flautas came and I was impressed. I got 4 flautas that were roughly an inch in diameter, stuffed with beef and freshly fried. These were served on a bed of lettuce, topped with cheese, and flanked by healthy portions of rice and refried beans. There are even two additional strips of mexican cheese, a large scoop of sour cream, and a whole quarter of an avocado on the plate! The rolled tacos were crispy including some of the beef that had been fried but the inside was tender and juicy. For the the level of quality of my dish, I didn't mind paying $12 for my dish at all, it was definitely worth it. My sister got the burrito spread which was the size of my bicep(!) and topped with a nice tangy tomato sauce and cheese, all for ~$7. Came back another day and got the combo plate which was decent, they were ground beef enchiladas which were decent topped with a cheesy sauce which wasn't bad. I'm not a regular eater of enchiladas so i don't have anything to compare them too. I'd highly recommend the horchata here, you even get a free refill so don't hesitate to say yes when the waitress asks if you want another :) Both of our dishes were extremely large and filling and delicious. I am very excited about this place, it's probably one of the best sit-down mexican food places i've been to in a while. The food isn't innovative or exotic but it's done very well and served generously, a winning combination I'd say. I mean c'mon the chips and salsa were delicious I practically got full of of them and even asked for extra chips and salsa to take home! This is a cute little place on the Avenue with table service. The bright colors and flowers in the window give it a more homey feel than most. Eyes beginning to bulge on stop 4 of the taco crawl, I ordered shrimp from a list of fillings that include the standards plus head, maw, and...horn? Billie asked about it, but through the language barrier we only learned that they didn't have it today. I...wasn't sad to hear that. The shrimp are small, the salad size, but they pack a lot of them in there. For the first time today, there was shredded lettuce and cheese on it; it must be specific to the shrimp, because the other tacos that came out didn't have it. We got chips and sauce with the meal; the sauce was pretty bland, but I was too full to care, really. Our server, even with limited English, was sweet and attentive. The food came out right away, and at $1.50 to $2 a taco, you can afford to do some serious eating here. read more

I was really excited to try Charrito's because of the excellent reviews, but my experience was just OK. I had a carne asada taco, which was very good. What I was most impressed with - one of my group ordered the tripe taco, and it was cooked in a way I'd never seen before. It was cut into small pieces and cooked almost like bacon - it had that chewy/crispy quality to it and was actually very delicious (and I'm not that adventurous when it comes to tacos). The negatives were the chips and salsa - the chips had been cooked in old oil, and so they were bitter and not edible. The service was just OK. It was almost funny because one person in our group seemed to bearing the brunt of it. He had to ask twice for his drink, and then his food came when the rest of us had had ours for several minutes. So, OK, but compared to some of the other places we stopped that day, not that great. read more

Of the Mexican restaurants on Independence Ave, Charritos is among the best. It's humble and unassuming, yet very clean and with a nice atmosphere. Atmosphere is an element often lacking in a lot of the Mexican restaurants in the area, most if which have decent food but no attention to the experience if dining: decor, music, lighting, etc. Charritos has a flower arrangement on most tables, is brightly lit, plenty of windows and natural light. The food is nicely presented, with very generous portions. And very inexpensive. Their salsa verde enchiladas were delicious, as were the flautas and steak with nopales. HORRIBLE STAY AWAY!!!! THIS PLACE NEED TO BE CLOSED DOWN. There was bugs in the shredded cheese not just one but several, and when telling the waitress she looked dumb founded like I melted the cheese with the bugs in it. My order was wrong but they argued with me and told me that there chalupas look like tostadas. I'm no newbie to Mexican food. Stay away is all I can say. read more

I came here because of the great review. At this place I tried one of the worst fajitas I have had. As others have said the chips and salsa weren't great. The chips came in a basket half the size of the ones offered at other Mexican restaurants. My fajitas were almost 15 dollars and again it was smaller portion than at other restaurants. They were burnt and completely oily on the bottom. The shrimp tasted old and it still had the tails on. Other friends ordered the carne Asada which was ok flavor wise but also tough and definitely not worth 14 per plate. The rice milk was the only item that was decent even though it needed raisins and cinnamon. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more
