I've been eyeing this joint for awhile now, avoiding a look at Yelp to encourage or discourage me from stopping in. Surely, I thought, goodness would come when you're the last Mexican dive headed East on Independence Avenue. So when I found myself in KC yesterday on business and it was nearby, like a beacon, Taco Express called my name. So it does share some things that appeal to me in this area of town: bars on some of the windows, interior painted in an orange, yellow or green, and miscellaneous 70s bad Mexican art and bric-a-brac likely painted by white people who thought they knew what Mexico must look like. Some paintings on velvet, some brightly colored wooden parrots, you get the drift. Tacky. I like tacky. The food, surely solid. I opted for a taco platter with rice and beans. Tip-off: no chips and salsa, a good sign they haven't yet bowed to the American version of things. Thank you. But what's this? Tacos, double wrapped, but not heated, separated by paper. Why? That's a new one on this side of town. Melted cheese on the refried beans, which were bland. The rice appeared to have benefited from maybe a bit of chicken stock but nary a spoonful of tomato paste or sauce. Equally bland and unappetizing. The tacos were seasoned fairly well, but amigo, in this part of town, the competition is off the scale. Good? Pretty much. Great? Nope, half dozen places within a mile that beat it hands down. At around $10 with a tip, stiff. Nice parking in the back, newly paved, convenient. If I came again I'd look at the specials which I saw on other tables and they looked quite good. But street tacos? A dozen places within a 5 minute drive that are better, including a couple of taco trucks West a mile or so that you can't even find on Yelp. To sum up, they seem to be in the middle here, somewhere between the great Mexican chow this side of town is known for, but headed in the wrong direction seeking something new that doesn't appeal to my tastes.

I was a little hesitant about this place because it is not really "Gorgeous" on the outside, or inside for that matter. However, What this place lacks in ambiance it makes up for with its DELICIOUS food. OMG OMG....wait to you try the fresh HOT flour tortilla chips and salsa. Holy cow how could a tortilla chip be soooo good? As for the meal, I ordered the chicken enchiladas, and they were in a word....HEAVEN! My friends had a Torta (Mexican sandwhich) and a platter of steak smothered in Tomato and Jalepeno...both dishes were DELICIOUS! We also ordered a tostada and a taco to try....these were also heavenly. TRY the avocado sauce....I do not know what is in it besides avocado....but it is soooooo good. My only beef is that they do not have Iced Tea, and they did not have Coke in their fountain when I ordered and they had to bring it in a bottle....but a few hiccups with beverages would not keep me from returning again and again to this wonderful hole-in-the-wall find! Epicureans....delight and rejoice...this is the spot!

The food is a perfect 5 stars....the decor is about a two, but the food more than makes up for the stark, cafeteria like appearance. Why do these hole in the wall restaurants have multiple televisions blaring telemundo!? But really the star of the show is the cooking. I love to take my friends here because they are always apprehensive of the way the place looks. IT is clean, however, so the decor really doesn't bother me too badly. They have all LOVED the food and have pledged a return to this small place. The prices are one of the first things that catches your eye. The steak tortas at $4.50 is delicious. The mounds of sauteed steak are delicious. The vegetables are always very crisp and fresh. They will also bring you lots of sour cream. This is not a low calorie meal! They look like they have a taco salad, but why bother! I also love the chicken burrito, the pork huarches, and I'm looking forward to trying an empanada on my next visit. I seem to land here a couple times a week. I'm feeling the need to share this place, because I want it to stay open! Try the salsa bar and the delicious bright "green" sauce. Oh, and the flour tortilla chips are the best! UPDATE: Something is not right with this place. We went last week, and the place was a wreck. The place was very dirty. We waliked in, and sat down. Not one person came to wait on us. I went to use the restroom, and the light was burned out. There wasn't any hot water, no soap, no towels, -which leads you to believe that the kitchen and wait staff don't even bother with these necessities! We were grossed out and left - probably won't go back - the food is so good, -so sad...

Fantastic dinner!…read more Amazing food! I had Mole Enchilada with rice, and ordered seasonal vegetables as side. Our table also had table side guacamole and salsa and chips. That mole was amazing! I'll be back - the mole and guac makes my mouth water thinking about it. The Mole Enchilada with chicken was so delicious - deep flavor with juicy shredded chicken. The seasonal vegetables included broccolini, carrots, and asparagus - slightly crunchy, just the way I liked them cooked! I also had a La Chimosa cocktail - c a m a r e n a tequila blanco, l i m e, a g a v e, g r a p e f r u i t soda, passion fruit - pretty good. I enjoyed the ambiance - lots of beautiful art on the walls, subtle lighting, green plants, tasteful decorations, table lines, and relaxed atmosphere. We were there on a Monday night - it wasn't busy. It was a great place to go for our business group of five. Servers were friendly, especially the woman at the front as you entered. We had a nice chat while I waited for the rest of our table to arrive. They validated parking in the garage next door - so keep that in mind if street parking is unavailable. Pricing was what I would expect for this nice location. It was $$ to $$$ depending on what you ordered. I would definitely go back and recommend!

After the host "checked," he suddenly found a table and seated us, but his attitude felt dismissive and unwelcoming from the start. We began with chips and salsa, which were actually very good. We also ordered two café de olla lattes along with chilaquiles and the chorizo Benedict. Our drinks never arrived, and when our food was brought out, our server Santiago noticed and went to check. I asked him to cancel one latte and just bring the other, but it still took another 10 minutes to arrive. When it finally did, the cup was chipped, making it unsafe to drink from. The food itself was underwhelming--the eggs on the Benedict were overcooked instead of runny as they should be. On top of that, Santiago only checked on us once, and that was just to drop off the check. Overall, the service felt inattentive and the experience didn't match expectations. We left unsatisfied and likely won't be returning.

I just took a swing at it, picked up a menu, and stood there. It took a while for somebody to acknowledge that I was there. The person who took my order was super involved, which is cool, but they needed some help, and the person who came by to help them seemed to be rather impatient, so that was one of the first things I noticed. They do bring your food out in a reasonable amount of time, delivered to your table. You have a number that attaches to a metal wand that they give to you. So the water station is set up in the back, you get your own water, but they were out of cups. They had a really cool aesthetic to it, with like the garage door where you can see all the downtown. The only problem was that the sun went down, and it started to get rather cold. Nobody ever closed the door, but I ordered the Asada fries. 3/5 heavy on the seasoning, but not so much on the flavor, it came across. It's kind of salty. I thought it would be different than what it was. The portion size was fine, and the green sauce that they offer you on the side really makes it better. Also ordered the CHORI queso dip lied on the chorizo for the portion size. The flavor was also a three out of five. The chip that they give you with it has a nice, good texture and reasonable seasoning. My wife had the mushroom Tinga tacos. She gave him four out of five. She really enjoyed them. The atmosphere is cool. The weights staff are really cool. I'd consider coming back on a Thursday. They have this cool thing that you can try new and upcoming dishes, and then they also have brunch, so I'm thinking about giving them a second shot. If you've never been, you should come and see what your opinion is, but really cool aesthetics and great views.

Food: The food was good and had flavor, the presentation and portions were not bad. The starters were small so be sure to order multiples for larger groups. The fresh oysters were really good, the paella was really good and large in portion size great table shareable or as a entree. The cheese board had a really good variety of cheeses and crackers with some fruit. That was a nice little gem on the menu. They do serve alcohol but could be a little more consistency on the pours. Two of the same drinks tasted completely different and they do have a wine section. Service: The staff was nice and quickly provided seating for our large group of 10 people. Our waiter was great! He took orders checked on us and provided some really good feedback on menu items when asked. Thank you, Atmosphere: I love the decor! It was rustic with hand pai ted murals and gave a artistic vibe to our experience. However, I was not a fan of the metal tables, it felt to industrial and the tables were off balance as well. The size of the table were also interacting as they seemed really skinny and most likely ment for smaller groups like 2 people. The ceiling at La Bodega was the best part of the decor. It was such a great twist on smearing colors together. Price: Coming from Los Anegeles I thought the prices were right on targetand fit with the portion sizes. Location: It's located in Kansas City Mousori. Parking: We ubered to the restaurant but parking did look to be tight on the street side not sure if they have another lot in the back.
