Two years later, still the best Mexican food I've had in the metro. Everything here is excellent! Locally owned and operated by a wonderful family. Charming, quaint atmosphere. The staff here is incredible and always very attentive. I love the queso dip! Also the cheese enchiladas and any taco you like are amazing. My favorite is the ground beef or the pastor. My wife loves the chicken enchiladas and also the shrimp enchiladas. I enjoy both of those as well. A very deep menu and everything is high-quality. Come try the soups in the winter. read more

This is a fabulous Authentic Mexican place. They serve with smiles if you go here you will not be disappointed in any way. My favorite dish is served in a black stone dish. There is beef, chicken, chorizos + cactus leaves! Enjoy Mexican Beer or Soda or any soft drink. YUM! read more

This is definitely a hidden gem! There is two entrances, one in the front of the building and one in the back where you park your car. I came here for a quick lunch and it was worth every single penny! Good authentic Mexican food is hard to come by these days. My co worker recommend coming here due to us wanting tacos, everything on the menu is reasonably priced. It was nothing on there over $25! And lunch was literally $8.95 for most selections. I had grilled shrimp and steak, rice and beans with guacamole. SO good! My co workers had an asada burrito , 2 chicken flautas and one taco all served with rice and beans. The server could've been more attentive to the table considering it wasn't busy. I still had a pleasant experience while dining in, however there is an up charge if you use your cars instead of paying with cash. I'll definitely be back when on this side of town. Used to go to this place three or four years ago the food was OK It wasn't nothing to rave about then we used to come on Fridays to get the Menudo and we will take it home me and my wife we did that twice and there was never any meat in the Menudo very little tripe or homini. I have made mention that there was no meat or tripe and the Menudo when I got home and it said oh no, you're wrong. We always put plenty of meat and tripe in it when I said I will take a video of it next time they weren't so nice then so we just decided not to go there anymore. read more

My boyfriend and I hit up El Alteno last night. He's lived in the area for years but hadn't ever made it there (and I live in OP) so we decided to go to try something new for both of us. First impression was you can tell it's kind of a divey joint when you walk in but it was very clean and they've done a nice job with the decor for a Mexican restaurant at this price point, compared to others I've been to around town. The service was very prompt and friendly. Chips came out quickly and I love when restaurants provide separate salsas for each guest. We ordered a guacamole to share, I got a steak chimichanga and my boyfriend got a pork burrito (I can't remember which one). The guacamole was just ok. I like mine to be a little chunkier and with a bit more lime. My chimichanga was delicious and very cheesy. It did get a little greasy as it sat but I thought the taste was great. I also loved the rice. Beans were nothing to write home about but tasted fine. My boyfriend really enjoyed his burrito as well. Prices were very fair, though the guacamole was expensive compared to our meal, but that's everywhere. I would happily go back and I think it's going to go into my boyfriend's carryout rotation. read more

This is the best Mexican food I've had in the KC metro area! Generous portions, lots of cheese and toppings. The chicken soup is so wonderful! Served in a big raised stone bowl with lots of chicken and delicious broth. The enchiladas melt in your mouth here. I wish I could eat here every day! read more

El Alteno's food was great. The carnitas were lean and a good portion - the jalapeño slices were a nice touch. Flavorful beans and rice. My wife said her chicken quesadilla was great too. Food came out really fast. Food was 5 stars. Salsa just wasn't as good as rest of the meal - needed salt and maybe garlic and onion. Also, after we ate no one came by to give us our ticket. We wanted to get a box to go but instead wrapped up left over quesadilla in napkins and walked up to pay without receiving our ticket. Could be they were short staffed. read more

We went in about 50 minutes till closing. Did the waitress treat us that way? Not at all! She was kind and attentive. Did the food taste rushed or "end-of-nightish"? Not at all! It was fresh, well seasoned, hot, and came out quick! Not to mention the fact that it was a lot of food. My only "complaint" is the booth we sat in was quite dark. Absolutely delicious! Stopped by here for a late lunch with my brother. You know when a place is packed at 2:30PM for lunch that it must be good! They did not disappoint. They give you chips and salsa for a starter. This is not unusual, however, both are quite clearly homemade and were absolutely delicious. I liked the salsa so much that I asked for a container to go! I got a carnitas taco (soooooooo good) , a beef enchilada and beans/rice. While it was all very good, the carnitas is something special for sure. My brother got a pork tamale along with beans/rice and an enchilada and he also really liked his food. And when I tell you that these people hustle....wowwww! Literally as soon as people left their table, someone was there cleaning the table, the chairs/booth, and even the floor underneath. I used the restroom after we were done, and the toilet had clearly also just been cleaned. When we walked in, we were immediately seated. The service was fast, the people were nice, the food was fantastic, and everything was clean. You can't ask for more than that! When I go back, I will definitely be trying out the guacamole as well as getting more of that yummy carnitas! read more

We decided to give this place a try after hearing about their street tacos. We started with a margarita and cheese dip. The margarita was pretty good and the white queso was tasty as well. For the main course I got a carne asada taco (which was the best thing we got) and a beef enchilada (which I didn't care for). My husband ordered two carne asada tacos and agreed they were delicious. He also tried a tamale which he didn't really like. He thought the red sauce tasted more Italian than Mexican. Favorite Mexican spot in the Kansas City area! My husband and I go as much as we possibly can! Their quesadillas are truly the best I've had. Its family owned and they have the whole family working there. They make everything from scratch! The guacamole.. amazing! Margaritas.. amazing! Friendly staff with free chips and salsa as soon as you sit down. We asked for their hot salsa and liked mixing it with their regular salsa. Hubby ordered the special for the day which was pork carnitas. They were excellent! Really moist and flavorful. I ordered the spicy chicken diablo. It was a grilled chicken breast covered with a creamy spicy sauce, mushrooms, onions and green peppers. It was good, but I definitely was envious of hubby's lunch. I had a large enough portion to bring half home for lunch the next day, which can be a bonus. We will definitely return to try more things on the menu. read more
