I love this chapters because they have a really big kids section, they just renovated that entire kids corner in 2010. They have a Thomas Train Table, a little Kitchen Corner, a Puzzle table and big tea cup in the middle as a bench where you can read stories in. All the kids books are also stored in the area but they also have tons of toys. I would almost say that the toys outweigh the books. I am not sure what day of the week but they have a free story time with art's and crafts afterwards once or twice a week. For the Parents they also have a Starbucks in there with free WiFi.

Playtime Toys - Carlos with my iced pumpkin spice caffe latte

Playtime Toys

Last Monday, I was heading over to Crêpes de Luxe at Erin Mills Town Centre for dinner. I was…read moreleaving the second floor of Walmart and had my eyes peeled for the escalator to take downstairs. To my right was Playtime Toys. It is rare for me to do a full stop in front of a store. It is even more rare for me to also audibly say in a mall, "Oh, my gosh!" I saw a ton of Squishmallows. I have been a fan of these plushies for years, but the company saw a massive boom during this pandemic and actually had issues producing more plushies to meet the demand. I have never seen so many Squishmallows in a store in my life. Shortage? There didn't seem to be a shortage here. Although hangry, I took a quick look around. Behind the cashout area were huge Squishmallows. Towards the front of this store, there were medium and small ones. I love the food ones, but have yet to own them because they were in high demand earlier this year and I could never get one. I was in heaven! I had to get some dinner. Once I was happy stuffing my gut with crêpes, I returned to this store and it had closed just after 7 pm. I was oddly not bummed about it. It allowed me to not buy every Squishmallow available and I knew that I needed to return. Yesterday, I headed back to this store. For once, I had some self-control. I wanted to buy one Squishmallow. Which one, though? Although I love the fries and burger Squishmallows, seeing Carlos the crab in a mini version made my purchase easy. I have a larger version of Carlos that I had bought earlier in the year. Being a Cancerian, it made perfect sense to get him. He is adorable, especially his claws. I was so enamoured that I knew he had to be mine. I looked around the store. There was a large wall full of TY beanies. I loved looking at Mr and Mrs Potato Head items. The back wall has board games and fun activity kits for folks of all ages. There are Funko Pop figures, too. It's a smaller selection at this store, just behind the small and medium Squishmallows, but it's pretty good. I went to pay for Carlos. The woman was great. I paid with a debit card. She asked me whether I wanted a bag. I declined and thanked her. Prices for Squishmallows are comparable to those at other stores. This place had a few Squishmallows that were on sale, which was great. I had to get another iced caffe latte from Crêpes de Luxe and returned. I normally don't take food or drink photos with a plushie, but Carlos was so cute that I couldn't resist. No, he will not have his own Instagram account and you won't see him in all my Yelp photos going forward. We can't get the fame get to his head... haha! I learned that Playtime Toys is a family-run business. There are four locations in the GTA. I hope to drop by the one at Hillcrest Mall, which is the closest one to me. I like a store that feels magical when I first walk into it. I felt all that at Playtime Toys. It does bring out the kid in you. I'm so grateful for finding a new store that I like. (379)

there were 3 big problems with this store and our experience with it. Some context is: me and my…read morefriend work at the same place, we went to the mall to check out some stuff because we were going to get paid the following day and wanted to see what we could buy. We went a total of 3 times, one on Thursday when we went to check out stuff, and twice on friday; once to buy a product and twice to try and return it. 1. The lady working (I am assuming the manager/owner because I have only ever seen her work there) was very rude and disrespectful towards me and my friend. My friend picked up an item to look at it and she got really angry and yelled to stop, she was acting very condesending giving us looks and overall having a bad attitude. Seemed boarderline racist but ill get into that next.. 2. She was also being boarderline racist as I am white and my friend is a POC, and as soon as we walked in (Thursday) she gave him very nasty look, as well as following us around, then eventually calling security on us. In hind sight this should have been a red flag not to buy from here. 3. My friend spent $80 on a drone that looked nice but was actually very cheap, probably worth $20 or less. After seeing how cheap it was he went to return it, and the lady (who was also on her personal phone) said "No refunds" in a very disrespectful way. Keep in mind she didnt tell him that there was no refunds or anything but it was said on the recipt after the purchase which is kind of useless. Overall my service was very poor and the toys are cheap, but way overpriced. I do not recommend buying from here and if anyone asks me if they should it would be a firm no.

The Littlest Gift Boutique - Animal plushies

Recently, Sanrio and Pusheen did a collaboration and offered a number of products. There were two…read moreplushies that I wanted from this collection. I tend to buy all things Pusheen from queenie's cards. When these products were rolled out, they were sold out within five minutes of being available online. I'm not exactly a hardcore Pusheen fan where I need everything. I am fairly selective. I actually found out about these items being sold out an hour later. Because queenie's cards was closing its physical store, but remaining as an online-only store, it wasn't going to restock. Queenie suggested that I try The Littlest Gift Boutique. She is friends with the owner. Sure enough, I was able to order the two plushies that I wanted. Yay! There were options to either have them delivered or visit the store at Square One. Since I hadn't shopped at this mall in nearly two years and I knew that I would be in the area, I went with pickup. I dropped by last night. Information about where the store was clearly stated in my confirmation message from The Littlest Gift Boutique. I had no problem finding entrance 9 at the mall. I parked and walked over. The store doesn't have its formal business name displayed. Rather, it simply had Gifts & Collectibles as I walked by. I looked at the plushies behind the glass, looked across to see Laura Secord, and put everything together. This store was what I needed. Similar to walking into queenie's cards, it felt magical at The Littlest Gift Boutique. It specializes in Japanese gifts and plushies that you get from playing claw machines. I was so happy looking at everything in this store. There are a lot of Pusheen products. I have a few that were displayed, such as Pusheen as a donut. I looked at the two plushies that I was about to pick up. They looked so adorable. I got to speak with the owner, who was friendly and great. I asked what she needed from me for her to fetch my order. She said the order number would be fine. I let her look at the number on my phone and she knew exactly which order was mine. She came back with a clear bag containing my plushies. I was in love with them. I asked how long she has been at the mall. She had her launch in November 2020, and then had to shut down due to one of our pandemic lockdowns. She will be at the mall till December of this year. Her business is considered a popup store. I let her know that her store filled me with joy. I could tell that she was happy hearing it. I wished her a great evening and I happily walked out with my goodies. I love getting handwritten notes. She had written one on my bag. It was lovely! My two new plushie addictions are cool. Pusheen is wearing a pink Hello Kitty dress with real pockets and Hello Kitty is wearing a Pusheen outfit. Cute! I loved a lot of items in this store, from an extensive wand collection, to Funko Pop figures. There was so much to look at. I was probably in this store way longer than I had anticipated. This store is awesome. I'm looking forward to returning, hopefully before it is no longer at Square One. (367)

So yeah, just how much do you like your Japanese toys, and how much do you really want to pay for…read moreit? And is it really Japanese that you are looking for? It'll depend on your upbringing. I grew up amongst the Sogo 崇光, Mitsukoshi (三越), Yaohan (八佰伴), AEON and Seibu (西武) and had access to some really quality Japanese toys of the Showa (昭和) period. Did I grew up in Japan? No, I grew up in Hong Kong, and all I really wanted back then was a decent diecast KMB bus, the one that ran outside my childhood home on Jordan Road. I might've looked at all the Tomicas and Gundams, but none of those things really captured my imagination. That's why my parents bought me Legos instead. Fast forward to today. See, when your $dayjob have you run IT operations for a mid-sized company, you need a hobby that would help you majorly de-stress. For me, that implies building model kits, Lego sets, or travel. Oh, even better if it helps you remember your Hong Kong roots. I might run my plarail train sets, but those are MTR Plarail sets exclusive to HK. It also helps to have a wife who are understanding of your stress shedding hobby (she also love Re-ments). On the way to Toronto we made a stop in Mitsuwa (the US successor to Yaohan) in New Jersey and picked up a few Re-ments and F-Toys trade models before heading north. Me and the missus were driving around Markham looking at the mostly mediocre Chinese malls out there (seriously, how many travel agencies, herbal shops, restaurants, cellphone stores and "Korean" clothing stores do you really need?) during the snowstorm 2 weeks ago, and we came across Langham square, which is this kinda-premium shopping mall complete with free indoor parking (my wife loved that) and a T&T Supermarket, which was in total contrast to the other malls like Splendid China Tower (totally misnamed), which didn't even bother to shovel their parking lot. Maybe the name references the large snow bank walling up their parking lot on Steeles Street East. So why are local Chinese owned malls so keen to crib names from their more famous Hong Kong equivalents? Langham square was named after Langham place, which is this kinda-stylish vertical shopping mall that was located in the heart of Kowloon (fun fact: it was built by Hong Kong's infamous Urban Renewal Authority in an attempt to kill off the nearby Portland street red light district and gentrify the area - totally didn't work). This one was slightly different in that the area features some rather nice premium condos nearby (so if you came from the transit-shopping-podium-condo tower indoor complexes of Hong Kong's upper middle class, man, is this home-like to you). The mall features some of the same we saw all over Markham, while other stuff just seem like it can only exist here at this mall. A tax attorney. An IT consultant. The Markham equivalent of BlueRibbon (pre-prepped meals aiming towards a Cantonese palate). A maid agency. A social club. This seems a little more tailored towards the Crazy Asian Rich. And then my wife pointed out an anime store - those are a dime a dozen, probably selling some fake Pokemon merch painted in garish colors straight from Shenzhen. "Babe, this one is carrying TinyHK merchandise". WAIT, WHAT? So there are only 1 other place that I am aware that would sell you TinyHK diecast cars and models. It belongs to a shop that sells Airsoft guns located on the 2nd floor of Pacific Mall's "Culture walk" (or as I call it, Stereotype Central). I already bought an F-Toys model from them, and I was a bit put off by the owner's non-existent customer service skills. "Hi, may I help you?" Whoa. Is that the TinyHK mushroom hawker center model? And the price isn't too overly ridiculous (Canadian dollars, taxes included). See, I order TinyHK merch directly from HK, but the shipping is fairly atrocious. This store will sell me Tomicas and TinyHK diecast vehicles for a few bucks. "Hey, here's our card. If you order more than 100 USD we'll ship it stateside for free". Score and paydirt. So yeah, the quick and the easy - its a small storefront that is part-time staffed, they carry Tomicas, Re-ments and are an authorized TinyHK retailer. They also sell some other figurines, plushies and toys straight from Japan (so you won't see the same BS as all the other anime stores in Markham). Decent selection, pricing isn't too bad, and if you are a Honkie nerd (like me) you'll pretty much know what you're looking at and how much you want to buy. Definitely a stopover if you collect TinyHK or want that piece of collective memory from Hong Kong in your home. Seriously, they should just call this place "Yaohan". Us old school Honkies will totally get that.

Legends has extremely competitive pricing (Games Workshop stuff usually 20% off!) and a very nice selection of board games, comic books, cards, minatures, and geeky merch (I definitely picked up a Rainbow Dash mug on my last visit here.) Really flexible hours of operation, open late many nights of the week, and there are constantly events occuring here. They have a fairly large, well-lit, and clean gaming space in the back. It's like Walmart lol you go in for one thing and leave with 10. There's a pretty good selection of board games, both popular and obscure. If they don't have what you're looking for they'll gladly order it for you and give you a call when it comes in. The guys who work there are all very nice and very knowledgeable. The first time I came, I was still fairly new to tabletop gaming so I wasn't sure what to get. I had my eyes set on Agricola but after talking to the associate I realized I wasn't ready for such a heavy euro game just yet. The associate asked us what we liked and then basically went through their entire collection with us, pointing out and explaining various games that he thought would appeal to us. You don't get customer service like that anymore! All the games are also much cheaper than you would find at Chapters or Mastermind Games. They've also got tons of other nerd stuff like comic books, figurines, and superhero paraphernalia. The store is located in the back of the plaza so it's difficult to find if you don't know where to look.
