Place should be condemned. Went there for last time last night. Food was garbage. Ordered fried rice that came out looking like a pile of something they swept up off the kitchen floor then soaked in oil. Some food on pupu platter looked reused. Egg Rolls that are supposed to be so famous were cold and nothing like they used to be because the owner went with a cheaper vender like with everything there. Nothing inside has been upgraded or changed (like rugs or booth seats) in about 50 years. RI board of heath shut this place down a few times for good reason. Just go to RI Board of Health... inspections and actions are available for public review. I've always enjoyed myself at Chan's, but not because of the food. The owner, John Chan, is a great host. The place is cozy. The entertainment is amazing, if you go for the famous 'Eggrolls and Jazz' shows, which feature some the area's best musical talent, focusing on jazz and blues. But I've had better Chinese cuisine. On a recent visit, I had one of the reasonably priced combination dinners: Spring roll, garlic green beans and vegetable lo mein. I started with Hot & Sour soup, after confirming that it did not contain meat. Some places use pork. Others, tofu. Chan's was tasty but lacked protein, using neither. It arrived at room temperature so I sent it back. The second time was much better and I enjoyed it. The garlic green beans were crisp and cooked perfectly. They were very garlicky, which I love.. the sauce was a little gelatinous once it began to cool. Tasty, but not appetizing to look at. The spring roll was delicious. The lo mein was disappointing. The texture of the noodles was papery and dry. The sauce appeared to be mostly soy sauce, so it was very salty. The veggies were lacking. My date also ordered a combo dinner: Beef teriyaki, chop suey and fried rice. The beef was rare (red inside), which we'd never see in Chinese cuisine before. The rice was pretty good. The chop suey was bland. Portions were generous and prices quite reasonable. My dinner was $11.50 and I couldn't finish it. The drinks, however, were pricey. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay and a waitress who was nearby suggested I get the bottle. A glass, she explained, was $9, while the bottle was $21. I took her suggestion, since taking home unfinished wine is now legal in RI. But I was disappointed when the bottle turned out to be Barefoot brand. I've got nothing against the wine, but I can buy a bottle at my local liquor store for $8.50, so $9 per glass seemed a bit outrageous. Like I said, I always enjoy myself at Chan's and plan to return later this month. But it has little to do with the food. They used to have a buffet on Friday evenings that was pretty good. I know Chan's has been around forever. I remember going to Chan's as a kid with my parents when it was in Providence. We went for their sticky wings which to this day are still good. I just wasn't impressed by the rest of my meal. The white rice was cold and the sesame chicken was too breaded. Plus the door chime kept going off which was annoying. Maybe if we stayed for the show I would give a better review. The service was excellent and the server very polite. read more

I order fry rice and the person on phone say veggie fry rice thought that will be only green string bean and green peas but that waS not it at all they put inn water chestnuts mash room witch that my kid is allergic too and I call them to tell them what they did and the person give me an attitude about it and they hung up on me twice and after I had enough so I went back and demanded to speak to a manager and they say he was not there again all this could have been avoided with they would just replace the rice but no they just want to give me the run around in-till I told that he could have die from that so they replace the rice still did not give me what I ask for because I i ask for fry rice only no veggies and yet again I got fry rice with veggies they did not listen at all. This has to be the worst experience my family and I have ever had.... we were the only people in the dining area. That should have been a sign and raised a few red flags since it was a Friday night at a Chinese restaurant.... But figured we'd give it a shot... Well everything was horrible from the waitress to the guy sitting in the bar area dropping "F" bombs like there was no tomorrow... I actually had to walk up to the bar to get a refill of soda because the waitress never came around... but wait... I found her sitting at the bar when I got my sofa refill.... Got home with takeout and opened it up to this "sesame chicken" this is literally chicken fingers with a few sesame seeds sprinkled on it. We ordered 3 plates of it, safe to say we are not happy. We did not order chicken fingers. This is not the usual sesame chicken dish. We called to ask about it and the restaurant replied that this is what their usual dish looks like..... We waited OVER AN HOUR for our food! Our waitress was nowhere to be found. Other tables around us were flagging down other servers to get their checks. Unrelated to the service, but it was freezing inside. It was December and it felt like they didn't have the heat on. Everyone was wearing their heavy winter coats inside. Chan's is one of the cooler places I've drive through. The meal for two was quite expensive for Chinese food and the food lacked flavor. We enjoyed our meal but at the price point we can find other options in the Woonsocket area that would feed us for a whole week at that price. Chan's did serve what seemed to be very healthy food options. Instead of frozen foods it seemed like they were using fresh veggies. I gave them a good rating because of this caveat. Just not sure if I want healthy chinese food or if I want a salt loaded deep friend 'fill in the blank.' An employee also got into a screaming match outside while we waited for drive through. Food was overly salty. Not tasty at all. The fried rice was drenched in Soy Sauce...could not taste the rice nor the other ingredients. Chicken dish was overcooked, horrible. I cook Chinese and it is not difficult to make nice tardy dishes. What a disgrace ! What really bothers me is how the owner can run a business like this after all these mediocre reviews and still continue running the place without any improvement nor care. Chan's has been there for generations, and there's a reason for that. The food is always awesome, the staff is great, they have live music, and they are truly one of the last remaining Polynesian Tiki style restaurants. Excellent food and great drinks. Never change! read more

We have been customers of Chans for years. But not sure if we will be coming back. I am not one to complain or leave reviews but at this point I feel it is necessary. The last few times the quality and accuracy of the orders has been terrible. Not anything like what we have become accustomed to for years so I don't know what is going on. COVID times or not the times we have gone haven't been busy and this sub par attention to quality and accuracy is unacceptable. The prices have gone way up and wouldn't be an issue paying if they were even worth it. I spent $90 a month ago for a family of 4. The food was tiny. The takeout containers were barely filled. And the sesame chicken had only sauce...not even 1 sesame seed on it. I didn't order chicken fingers soaked in sauce. Not to mention some were under cooked...like the chicken was a raw chewy consistency. We tried again on anew Years Day. Granted a busy time and we were willing to wait for food. Went to pick up at the window 5 minutes before the time they gave. (We only live about 5 minutes away by car). Got the food home and it was stone cold, again tiny and unfilled containers. Spent around $75 for it this time and the chicken fingers that came in the combos were again that raw chewy texture. Crab rangoons were like they came out of the fridge. Stone cold. And the dishes were maybe luke warm. This makes it hard to support small businesses when you can't get consistent quality for what you pay for. Chan's needs to step it up before we will come back...and with the lack of quality and high prices they better do it fast because other restaurants are far superior in the area and worth a few minute more drive to get better quality and more for your money. read more

OK here goes. It's rare that I review a place more than once. Even rarer that I would go back to a place where I had such a negative experience. Chan's completes the trifecta by actually being the first place where on top of all that, I've gone back for more punishment and had an even *worse* experience than on all previous visits. I try to keep reviews objective, but this place is so bad I almost take it personally. Here goes.. - Arrived 45 minutes before a general admission show yet a good portion of the best seats at largest tables seemed reserved. Got seats no problem, great view. But, seats are old uncomfortable hotel ballroom seats, tables and people are squeezed too tightly. - Took 10-15 minutes to be greeted by the server, and much longer to order and receive our first round of drinks. Said server apologized\complained of being short staffed several times during the night. Same exact thing that's happened on our previous 2 visits. - Drinks were fine, but again, service was horribly slow, and we only managed to fit in 2 rounds during what was probably a 2.5 hour visit - Food was, shockingly, even more disgusting that in previous visits. I get that not everyone has awesome Chinese food, but the rice and parts of the entree were cold and dry, and the entrees just awful. Rubbery bland meat, heavy breading, and terrible cloying sauces. I'm really not overstating when I say this was literally the worse Chinese food I've ever had. And it's not cheap either, which might provide a sliver of an excuse. - During show, someone (Mr. Chan ordered it I suspect) decided to suddenly plug in an obnoxious neon sign right behind the sound board, which was right behind our table. We went from candlelit ambiance to trashy glaring street lighting. I had to go out and request it be unplugged. - I left 3/4 of my entree untouched because it was so bad (Similar with my wife and hers). Did the server finally me if it was OK? Nope. Just ignored it and just brought a container out in case we wanted to take it home. I wouldn't punish my dog by bringing that food home. - During show, servers kept going in and out of the door right next to the soundboard. When they were not literally bumping the back of my chair (due to limited room), they were distracting because there was *live music* somewhere else in the restaurant and Johnny A's show was drowned out repeatedly, memorably at one point by someone belting out "House of the Rising Run" loudly in the lounge. Nice. Really let us enjoy the show we actually paid for. - The performer mentioned several times about having problems with bright lights and flashes. Again, during the show, some idiot *right at the bar* starts videoing with his phone flash on. Does Chan's staff put an end to it? No. They let it go on until Johnny A actually has to stop the show and MULTIPLE TIMES ask someone to get the person to stop with the flash. Did I mention that the food was overpriced and horrible. Please heed me when I tell you this. This place needs to invent a new restaurant category "BYOF" with the F, of course being "Food". Seriously - there is no excuse for this place to have such horrible service and food. If you MUST go there (and we will probably never go again), I seriously suggest eating beforehand, and just plan on getting drinks. And don't sit near the entrance doors or doors next to the soundboard, try for the 1/2 of the room nearer the bar. read more

Very disappointing experience. Went to Chan's tonight for dinner and asked for a table for two. The hostess (which is a very kind appellation) said she wasn't sure if the waitress could handle any more in the dining room and offered to seat us at the bar or the lounge area. There were only three parties eating in the dining room, and there were plenty of tables available, even with social distancing requirements. The bar area, on the other hand, was dark and crowded. We asked the hostess to check on the dining room. She said someone would come momentarily, and then proceeded to count the money in the front cash register. She made absolutely no effort to check if someone would actually come - she was too concerned with counting the money to actually serve paying clientele. After waiting about five minutes for someone to arrive or for the hostess to actually serve customers, we walked out and went to another restaurant (By the way, River Falls restaurant DID serve us a very nice meal). read more

ZERO STARS!!!! I ate here and well the food was edible. Later, I found out by a family friend it has been closed numerous times throughout the years by the RI Dept of Health for rodent issues!!! Such as rodent droppings on food prep areas and on top of food products. As well as dead mice in their basement. So obviously they have an PROBLEM. I looked on the DOH site and this has been an ongoing issue for years n years n years. Not to mention meats not being refrigerated at proper temperatures. I could go on n on. So many people in the area have told me to go to Chan's . So I have tried a few other restaurants in the area and at this point by far has been the worst. When you go to someplace for a $17+ dollar take out meal for myself and you open the container and there is "maybe enough" for a lunch meal ! I would not recommend this place for dinner or lunch. Disappointed! This not-so-reputable establishment has been around for a very long time. But, because there had been an hour wait at Riverview Falls, we decided to give Chan's a try. The best part of our experience was our waitress, Marie! And, the duck sauce! Everything else we ordered was "meh". Wonton soup, dark broth, over-roasted pork strips and bland wontons. Crab Rangoon's, okay, but could use some sweetener. Fried Peking Raviolis, burnt and bland. Sauce was good, but how can you go wrong with garlic and soy! Fried shrimp with Chow Mein and pork fried rice - scared to try this icky, congealed brown sauce poured over Chinese noodles. Shrimp were tasty, but the batter was too thick and not golden brown! And, the rice was so dark, I could barely see the pork pieces. Edible, but not great. Curry chicken and egg roll for J. Just so so. We won't be back! Other than the attentiveness of Marie, I can't give more than 2 stars. It just wasn't very good. Perhaps hiring a brand, new artisan chef who uses fresh, local ingredients could change my heart. Chan's went 'way' Down Hill from what it was years ago! I had a beef and broccoli meal yesterday that was literally 'hard' to eat! From the mostly {65%} grisled beef, to the completely raw broccoli, it made eating impossible! Kentucky Fried Chicken or Burger King would have been a much, much better! No kidding! The most disgusting Chinese food I've ever had! I don't know how anyone can make a vegan meal comprised of rice, veggies and tofu gross, but they managed to. I was completely sick the next morning from the after-effect. And there was this little old Asian lady wandering around. She sat down at my table and put her trash on it. Then someone who worked at the restaurant came and got her. I think she's related to the people that own Chan's. I usually hit up Ciro's when I'm in downtown Woonsocket, but a few weeks ago with my girlfriend and friend from out of town. I thought the staff was friendly, the food was typical Chinese-American, the inside was very...... flamboyant(?), and apparently Mr. Chan has had a ton of famous people roll through here. I guess there is live music on some night which is pretty sweet. It was as neutral an experience as there is, I would normally give it 3 stars. In all respects, Mr. Chan should be a proud, secure man given that he is the owner of one of the few hot spots in Northern Rhode Island. Why is he such a boorish jerk? Why does he feel the need to yell at his employees in front of his customers (no, he isn't speaking Mandarin)? Why does he need to threaten to tow someone's car who was probably confused by the location of his parking lot? Why does he put up flimsy tape around the parking lot, knowing how windy New England is? Trouble at home or are you just angry Mr. Chan? I've heard so much about Chan's before ever stepping a foot onto Woonsocket soil, that I was totally psyched out to try their food. Sadly it took two tries to actually get the opportunity (on the first, I was told of a different closing time than what they actually closed at: either that or they just didn't answer the phone). I gave their delivery service a try one random weeknight ordering the beef ho fun and the chicken wings for Charlie. Total cost was over $22 bucks and they took nearly an hour and a half to actually reach our dining table. The beef ho fun was actually -really- good although they kinda skimped on the beef a bit. The chicken wings were pretty tasty as well. Still though, nearly twenty-four big ones for wings and ho fun (which is one of those dishes that is usually $5 at hole in the walls) is a little concerning. I suppose that the ambiance of dining in may make up for it, but as a business, this same quality should translate in their other services (ie, delivery). Either that or amp up the beef! Overall, it's uncertain if we'd order from here again: I certainly wouldn't mind more of those delicious noodles but seriously folks, us Asians so know it shouldn't be that pricey. I've been going to Chan's for 6 years now, but it's NOT for the food! Lousy. Unless you plan on seeing a live show there(which are always world-class acts), don't go there just for Chinese. I once went up to the mostly-empty buffet 5 times until I realized that they were not going to refill it at all. Not cool. On the upside, the drinks are strong and make you care less about the food. Went here just once this past weekend, and got VIP treatment from the very gracious host! The establishment is well-maintained. The decor is impressively elaborate, albeit a bit campy in a retro-cool-ish way. (Among a few things, note the placemats decorated with the Chinese zodiak.) The walls near the entrance and in the hallway are covered with interesting photos and paintings. Be sure to check out the beautiful watercolor paintings in the hallway separating the main dining area and the banquet room. The banquet room where the restaurant frequently hosts performances and gigs by renowned bands and musicians is colorful and festive. If I lived in the area, I'd be sure to check out the schedule regularly. Conclusion: Chan's is not just a good place to eat, but truly seems to be a fun and romantic place for folks of all ages to enjoy great music and entertainment. read more

We went here on a quiet, random weeknight. There weren't many people in the restaurant. I have a lot of food allergies so Chinese restaurants can be dangerous. I always ask about ingredients - wherever I go - before I order anything because that's what you do if you want to avoid a trip to the emergency room or an injection of an Epipen in the restaurant. I ordered something basic and my boyfriend ordered something else that he would have liked to share with me. When we asked the waitress if certain ingredients were in it, she snapped at us and said, as if quite put off by the question, that she didn't know. I clarified that the reason I was asking, is because I have severe food allergies. Again, she said she just didn't know what was in it. I finally had to ASK her to ask someone. This has never been a problem for me at any other restaurant - Chinese or not so I was kind of surprised (and a bit hesitant to eat what they served). Eventually she did tell me that there was nothing it that I had allergies to and we ate. The food was decent - I've had better, I've had worse. But I would not go back because of the service. Chan's "Fine" Oriental proves to be false advertising. I did not enjoy the decor, as it seemed as if a bomb shelter was filled up with cheesy looking oriental knickknacks. The menu had some good vegetarian selections and had plenty of traditional selections like sweet and sour chicken which my wife enjoys. That's where the good ends. The service was HORRIBLE. I had to find my server, as after 10 minutes no one acknowledged my existence. I ordered ice water, which had to be returned twice due to an unclean glass (Hello - food safety!). I ordered a tofu vegetable dish, which by far was one of the worst things that I ever ate. Bland and soggy, I ate about a quarter of it. Do the cooks at Chan's know what spices are? I know people love going to Chan's for the entertainment, but the food was just pathetic and awful. This is the place you'd bring someone that you no longer wanted to date. Save your time and money...there are far better Oriental restaurants in the Woonsocket/Blackstone Valley area (Fortune House in Cumberland, the Asia Grille in Lincoln, etc.) read more

This is without a doubt the worst restaurant I have ever been to. My advice to all is to stay away and save your hard earned money !!!! The egg rolls were as hard as rocks, the beef teriyaki and boneless spare ribs were as tough as shoe leather and the vegetables looked and tasted at least a week old and as if that was not enough to make you sick, the owners mother was sitting in the dining room and spit up a lunger and spit it right on the dining room floor !!!!!! It was good in an odd way. First off lighting was way too bright but seeing that the staff is mostly over the age of 65 I'm sure it's needed. The decor is what's so odd. I have craved good Chinese food ever since I left Rhode Island --- I guess I should clarify what I mean by good. I'm talking about the type of Chinese food I grew up with. The kind that has pork fried rice without egg in it -- the kind that has crab Rangoon and appetizer platters. After reading the reviews here, I thought it would be a great idea for my girlfriend and I to go to Chan's first before adult fun later. I was really looking forward to some great Chinese food as we both have a passion for it. Found the place pretty easily from the directions on the site. Cute outside look to the building. We walked in and was met by the owner (he had a portrait of himself up in the foyer so I figured he's has to be the owner right?) and he asked us if we wanted lounge, dining room or jazz room. I wasn't sure so we opted for lounge. Very quiet in there. We were the only ones. I figured it was like that because it was almost 8? hmmmmmm. They have this huge room inside the restaurant that is closed off with doors where they have live bands, jazz bands I think. It was packed in there and didn't think we needed that for the night but if you're into jazz, check it out. It's very popular locally I take it. The decor...definitely was oriental in flavor and yes campy in areas. The walls were done in oriental colors and style. Very nice! But over the bar they had this paper dragon that was well...kiddie style...like the kind for a kids party. It just didn't go well with the decor. Weird...... We ordered mai tais and they were strong and yummy. Ordered a pu pu for 2 and crab rangoons, vegetable fried rice and vegetable lo mien as sides. It was hit or miss on the food. Spring roles were extremely good but the crab rangoons were not (I have had much better crab rangoons elsewhere). The fried rice was good, the lo mien was good but the pork was tough. The chicken fingers were good but the beef teriyaki was just ok...little tough but the sauce was fine. The chicken wings were the best. I'm not sure if the trip here is worth another trip here. I recently attended House of Chan Rest. in Woonsocket, RI before an 8:00 PM concert next door to the restaurant. I made 6:30 PM reservations, feeling we had plenty of time to have dinner and walk next door. I will never recommend this restaurant! We arrived on time, were seated right away. They were very busy so we were patient. However after 40 minutes I flagged down wait staff to get service. When our food finally arrived at 7:30, it was not how but almost cold. I do not blame the wait staff, they were working very hard, I blame management. It is up to management to assign tables to wait staff. I will never waste my money on House of Chan again. read more
