I shouldn't have tried La Casa first... The food here was good, so this is more like a 3.5 star rating. The quesadilla de Hongos was SO GOOD! It reminded me that I should venture into meatless territory more often- the sauce was so light and flavorful with notes of lime! That alone is enough for a meal, but I also got the Cuban Sandwich. It was way too large, so I felt overwhelmed. But it was really good, just too much meat for my taste- also it only had 1 solitary pickle slice. Service was okay- I had a slight feeling of being unwelcome. Definitely not warm. I probably won't return due to the other great food nearby, but it's a solid place to get a decent meal. read more

Came here for dinner for the first time this past Friday. I didn't think they took reservations but I called around 5 pm and asked if I could make one for 7 pm for 3 people and they took it down. I'm glad I did since the place isn't very big and all of the tables were taken except ours when we arrived at 7 pm. Chango is BYOB which is a plus. We brought wine but you can also bring liquor and they can make margaritas or mojitos with it. To start, we got two orders of empanadas (chicken and spinach & cheese, 2 per order), yucca fries, and the meatballs. The empanadas were delicious - they gave us beef instead of chicken but we ate it anyways and it was very tasty. The meatballs were good but they had a lot of cilantro in them and the sauce which my boyfriend did not like. I expected the yuca fries to be similar to the yuca fries I've gotten at La Casa and the Cuban but they were much more 'french fry' like than theirs. The cilantro dipping sauce was tasty. For mains, my friend and I each tried the shrimp in red mole sauce. I really enjoyed the dish and it came with a large portion of kale that was pretty tasty. My boyfriend got the Vaca Frita He expected the meal to be different than it was. While it was flavorful, it was very dry - it could've used some type of sauce on it (only came with a couple of limes to squeeze over it). I was dying to try this restaurant out since it had been in my home neighborhood for so long, and while everything was super good - I was a tad bit underwhelmed. Some things were kind of bland to me, but majority of the other items were very good. Out waiter was very friendly, but took very long to come to our table whenever we needed something (which was odd considering the fact we went at a time when business was slow and the place was borderline empty). My husband and I ended up at Chango Kitchen after wanting to eat next door at Ovale, but their 2 seats were full and it was cold outside. Being vegetarian/vegan I wasn't sure what options there might be for me, but we are SO glad we ate here! My husband ordered the Cuban, and we got the white bean soup to share. It was beans in a broth but good. The star of the show, though, was my vegetarian platter, and specifically the warm kale. All of the components of my platter were great (not specified on the menu, but rice, beans, kalamata salad, a potato pancake kind of thing, pickled onions, and the kale. Oh, the kale! I wish I had asked if they would share the recipe, because I had no idea that kale is something you could still be thinking about days after your NYC trip where you ate a ton of good food! Chango Kitchen is located on a quiet residential street. They seemed to have a good number of tables outside and about eight inside. They have a little bar area too, though they're BYOB. My friends and I brought some hard seltzers and cans of margaritas with us and our waiter was sweet enough to bring us chilled glasses to use with them once he saw. I was wowed by every dish we ordered! For me, the big winner was the Empanadillas con Pebre, which I ordered with the chicken inside. It was mouthwateringly savory and the chicken pulled apart like butter. Would 100% order again. I also loved my Salmon Caribeño -- couldn't get enough of the mango pieces they had on top and the salmon was supremely fresh. Our waiter was efficient and very professional, though perhaps a tad impersonal. I had frequented and loved Zafra for years. I was happy to learn that when Chango Kitchen took the location, they kept most of their menu and delicious food. I did 2 visits within days of each other and enjoyed both. I did get some downgrade opinions from my daughter and nephew on certain dishes, but overall I enjoyed the food. Have been meaning to try this place for the longest time since I live across the street. I love the indoor look, I didn't imagine it to look that way. We ordered the patatas bravas to start and the sauces were very flavorful. For mains, my boyfriend got the cubano which was massive and very good. Having been to many restuarants in Hoboken, I can confidently say Chango Kitchen is one of the best around. The staff is delightful, the food is flavorful, hot, fresh and just all around delicious and the location is nice and quiet, located away from Washington Street. I've been here a handful of times but the most recent was last night with a party of 12. The staff was attentive and quickly served us all hot food. It's such a plus that it is BYOB and they'll make you anything you want (margaritas, mojitos, pina coladas, sangria, etc). In short, our entire party was blown away by the experience. The albondiguitas were nicely seasoned on their own and complemented by a nice tomato vegetable sauce. We loved that the juices were blended to order, and natural. Wow I'm surprised with this restaurant lol. My boyfriend and I went when it was Zafra. Menu is pretty much the same. Today we ordered for pickup the sopa de pollo con cilantro aka chicken soup (we always get it), the Cubano (w/o pickles), and I get the pan con bistec guaro aka garlic steak sandwich (on Cuban bread). Everything was ready early. Everything was hot. Packed neatly in the bag. The Cubano sandwich, my boyfriend said is the best he's had!! He normally doesn't get them because the meat is dry but he was pleasantly surprised by the sandwich here!! I asked for mayo and they didn't put it on but it's ok. He didn't care. The ham and the pork were juicy and tender! He usually gets a ham and cheese. He said he would order this Cubano again and it's way better than la Islas. Swiss cheese perfectly melted. He said it's a 10/10! That says a lot! My pan con bistec guaro aka garlic sauce steak sandwich on Cuban bread was also delicious! It's not the best quality cut of steak, as it was tough, but the garlic sauce is excellent and makes up for it. The Cuban bread is great. The onions perfectly cooked. I'd order this sandwich again and again. They gave us buttered Cuban bread too as a side for our soup. Yummmm. Crunchy, buttery deliciousness. The chicken soup is good. We liked Zafra's recipe better for it (had some red oil that was so flavorful). I love the fresh cilantro in the soup. The chicken is always cooked perfect. Fall-off-the-bone perfect! Temperature of the soup was good for me. My boyfriend prefers it more hot. Potatoes perfectly cooked. We will still keep getting it. It's delicious when you add avocado!! (We always do. Wow, what a gem. Incredible food at a great price, in the New York area? Unheard of. I've had great Cuban food in Miami, and this definitely rivaled that. Just tried Chango Kitchen for the first time - and the food was delicious! Everyone raves about their lunch specials and I'm glad we gave them a try. Sadly, they were out of the pollo asado today, but the pork was a tasty alternative. We also ordered the chicken mofongo (fried green plantains) which had great flavor and a hint of spiciness. It was surprisingly crowded for a Monday at lunchtime, but there was no wait for a table outside. The seats are spaced out in accordance with COVID requirements, and the staff were wearing masks the entire time.  I'll definitely eat here again! read more

All main dishes were so salty that we woke up at night to drink a ton of water and had upset stomachs. Ordered ropa vieja (shredded beef) and shrimp in tomato sauce. They were both extremely salty to the extent that I was concerned for my health halfway through eating. Appetizer papa rellena (mashed potato ball) wasn't so pleasing either. Came here for restaurant week as the menu seemed enticing. It's a BYOB spot which is a huge plus and they can also do sangria with your wine! The empanada and ceviche appetizers were delicious. The empanadas were fried to the perfection and the filling was very tasty. The ceviche was fresh and reminded me of eating fresh fish on an island with the citrus taste. The chips served with it were a little burnt but I didn't even need to eat them with this because it tasted so good. For an entree I got the casita Cubana. The pork was very tender and flavorful. The black beans and rice were standard. The Yucca mash had a lot of garlic but was also good. My friend had the Vaca two ways. The Ropa Vieja was cooked perfectly but he said the other was over cooked. The maduros were a little on the drier side so if you like a less sweet and less crispy sweet plantain (which my friends did) these are for you! The guava cheese cake was standard. Cafe con leche was big and yummy. The service was really good. Always asking how everything was and differently. The place is small and quaint with a homey feel. FYI you cannot use the 10% discount on Yelp with the restaurant week or any type of specials. Overall this place is solid but it does not beat my favorite Cuban spot, Rumba Cubana. It was a good meal but wouldn't go out of my way to go here again. If you are in the area it is definitely worth a try though. read more

I am so glad this restaurant opened up in Hoboken! It is inexpensive for the amount of food and quality. I've been three times now since they opened because the service is authentic and welcoming. We stopped by Chango Kitchen on Friday for lunch. They have some outdoor and indoor dining, but we opted to sit inside since it was a bit hot outside. We got a bunch of dishes, and the servers were attentive and efficient. My friend really enjoyed the pumpkin soup (the tomato flavor is stronger than the pumpkin flavor). The beef empanadillas were really great and flavorful, especially with the cilantro sauce on the side. The one downside was the pollo asado daily special, as it was pretty dry, but it was very affordable and otherwise everything was great. dropped by this place on a random wednesday night and was not sorry. friend had mentioned he had take out from here that was v good, so we thought we'd give it go indoor dining. ps- at the time in october, they still had some limited outdoor dining available too. we ordered a LOT of food to try just the two of us. couldn't finish it all but i had leftovers for several meals after, no regrets. the appetizer sampler had a little bit of everything, yucca with a creamy cilantro sauce that i was really into, pretty standard papa rellenas, mini empanadas, ham croquette (bit salty for me), and maybe something else i'm forgetting. it was a good way to try lots of things. i got the churrasco with chimichurri, white rice, and black beans and i really enjoyed it. the dish was seasoned well and quite flavorful. friend got the ropa vieja and loved it a lot. the tostones came with like some very citrusy garlicky sauce that was nice. the cuban was really delicious and a good portion; personally wished there was slightly more mustard on it, but i might just be a mustard lover. the avo salad is just avo and onions, i like that, but just be aware in case you're expecting some other greens or lettuce with it. i REALLY liked the kale, it was lightly sautéed in maybe the same-ish citrusy garlicky sauce from the tostones? i'm not sure but it was my favorite thing that night. i'd definitely be back to this cute little restaurant, next time with a bottle of wine maybe since it's byob. the service was really really friendly and we were well taken care of. the bathroom is SUPER tiny btw; like. airplane levels of tiny. read more

Yesterday I was looking for coffee and randomly ran into this place. I was in complete shocked! The food and menu looked amazing and the prices were inexpensive. I ordered a frozen ice cream and a guava and cheese pastry. I wanted to go back for some more. The coffee was perfect and the pastry was flaky and it had the perfect amount and balance of guava and cheese. I loved how the staff spoke both Spanish and English which made the service a lot better. The place has a very calm and welcoming environment. First the positives. Appealing decor and warm staff right when you enter. It is a BYOB establishment. The appetizers were on point. Both Chorizo Encobollado and Patatas Bravas hit all the right notes and got us excited for the main course. It was all downhill from there. Both the Mofongo and Cerdo Brujo Con Yuca were dripping in lime juice. They were so sour we couldn't get through them. I have had Mofongo in Puerto Rico, and many other places in the tristate and that is just not the flavor profile of the dish. All that said, I might return. My experience could be one-off since so many other reviews and other patrons have given glowing reviews. I'll be sure to explicitly ask them to go easy on the lime. read more

We arrived here in the middle of a torrential downpour, and the staff was nice enough to take our umbrellas and store them to dry. We ordered a variety of food including the empanadas, chicken with *mole* sauce and shrimp soup. The empanadas were very tasty, and were crispier and flakier than other varieties I have had. The chicken+mole was just fine, though I may not be the most reliable source as I tried it more as an "experiment" than anything else. The chicken was on the drier side, but the flavor profile was very bright and diverse. I will certainly be back and will update this review after eating something more in my wheelhouse. Fairly affordable given the high quality, and the interior setting is cozy to say the least. Be prepared to hear the conversation next to you! Poor marks for service. They apparently don't understand the concept of a reservation. We made a reservation and arrived on time but they didn't save a table for us. After waiting what was supposed to be 10 minutes it was clearly going to take longer for a table. They ignored us while we waited. When we asked how much longer they were unapologetic and actually tried to blame the wait on us for not getting there before the reservation, when the last table was given to another party. Just say you don't take reservations if you don't honor them. We left and had a nice dinner elsewhere. read more
