Honestly, I was going to leave a 3 star review but after seeing what my stylist posted on instagram, I decided on a 1 star review. I came in with self-dyed hair in a color I liked. However, I was unable to keep up with dyeing the roots, so I decided to go back to a more natural color- a cool-toned brown. However, my stylist, Abbie ended up dyeing my hair straight up black (even another stylist agreed), which required her to strip the color 2-3 times. Most of this was done in the sink, which also happened to be the most uncomfortable salon sink. Anyways, I find out that Abbie posts about my "before" hair with quite the ratty comment which was completely unnecessary. No wonder she didn't tag me despite asking for my handle. She also failed to mention that she had to strip my hair three times, leaving it in a worse texture than before, despite telling me it wouldn't cause any damage. I was considering returning, but the professionalism is basically non-existent, so I'd rather not. Salon 241 is a better choice if you can spend more $. read more

I just want to say thank you to Stephen for saving my hair! Even despite the fact that I was about 15 min late for my appointment (did not know about the bridge construction going on) Stephen still took me in, and did a great job on my haircut even with the limited time. I am rarely ever content with the results of my haircuts, because I always feel like stylists insensitively cut off too much without talking to me about it first but Stephen was so considerate and professional... not only did he listen to what I wanted, he also made a point to double check that I was okay with the length he was about to take off, before making the cut. It had been awhile since my last trim / cut and my ends were very split and my hair was snarly and damaged from bleaching it several times over the past few months... But thanks to Stephen, it actually feels incredibly soft, the split ends are all gone and it feels thick and healthy... like he actually brought it back to life.... I'm so happy with it. I decided to look for walk-in hair service before attending an appointment that I had scheduled in Northampton. It was only about 9:30 or so in the morning, and so I expected that most salons might not yet be open. Luckily, Changes Salon was open and I was cheerfully greeted at the door. A wonderful woman named Lauren was available, and she immediately settled me in for a wash, cut, and blow-dry. Lauren was the loveliest person, and she was meticulous about the cut. When I saw how beautifully she crafted the shape of my new, angled bob to fit and flatter my face, it brought tears to my eyes. I haven't been so excited and pleased with a haircut in many years. Not that there has ever been anything particularly wrong with my previous cuts; Lauren just really created something beautiful. She did so quickly, skillfully, and with a great presence. The entire experience was friendly and professional, and with a price under $40, it was also very reasonable (I used to pay Newbury Street prices in Boston). I'm thrilled to have walked in to Changes and to have met Lauren. I highly recommend this salon and stylist. read more

Considering I just moved to Northampton....new job, new friends, new neighborhood, new hairstylist -- what better salon to choose than one aptly named Changes. Plus after asking around, all of the buzz seemed to lead me there. Kurt -- one of their Senior Stylists and seriously, THE best haircut I've gotten in as long as I can remember. I've been seeing him for nearly 3 months now and time after time....he consistently blows me away. (And not to discount any of the other stylists I've seen before who have all been good in their own right, but I have to say....he totally opened my eyes to what I've been missing.) And he's actually a nice guy to boot - easy to chat with and totally puts me at ease. Who knew! The salon itself is wonderful....warm and inviting in every sense of the word. The staff is outgoing, friendly and definitely add to the whole experience. I've been coming to Changes for the better part of the last two years, and I love it. The vibe in here is great, the stylists obviously love what they do, and the work is top-notch and very well priced. I felt bad that I hadn't written a Yelp review all this time! My hair behaves a little strangely and almost every place I go has some trouble with making it work, but not Changes. My availability is somewhat unpredictable so I often have to switch stylists based on their schedule: I can make solid recommendations for Elysa and Courtney. However, I've found my perfect match in Sarrah, who, in addition to being a great conversationalist and a talented stylist, is every bit as sweet as she looks! She has repeatedly outdone herself with every visit! Definitely some of the best haircuts I've ever had. The only downside I can think of: the one time I had the owner cut my hair, I actually didn't like what he did with it. Funny how that happens sometimes. To the crew at Changes: keep it up! I saw Edward for a cut and color and am very, very pleased with the results. I met with him ahead of my appointment for a consultation--all of 10 minutes of my time--and went over the color I wanted. Day of, he gave me EXACTLY what I asked for (about six inches lopped off my ridiculously thick mane, deep red color, spikey ends, and flat ironed to perfection) and executed the cut beautifully. Really nice guy, too! The salon itself is clean and modern, and the staff friendly. Ever since I moved back to the area, I've been bouncing from salon to salon. Desperately needing a major haircut, I started reading reviews on Yelp. Changes had some great reviews, and it's only a short walk from work so I decided to give it a try. I got an appointment with Kurt, who was very friendly and accommodating. He made sure that I got the cut that I wanted, and actually blow dried my hair before I left (seems more like the exception than the norm lately). I loved my new hair so much that I referred one of our customers to Kurt, and she came back to tell me that I saved her from her "really bad haircut" from another salon! This review is frightfully delayed, but better late than never! I popped into Changes on a whim after I saw a friend of mine immediately after she had her hair cut there, and booked an appointment with Elysa for the next day. After spending the last two years growing out my hair, I was a bit nervous about getting it styled, but I was absolutely blown away! Elysa did a fantastic job on my hair -- we talked for a good bit before she started styling, about what I wanted from the cut, and that alone helped to banish my worries. And the haircut itself -- well. I strutted out of the salon when she was finished. I've gone back to Elysa at least three times now, and each haircut/color has been exactly what I wanted. I get compliments on my hair all the time, even when I'm lazy about styling it, and it's thanks to her giving me an easy, but flattering cut! Everyone at the salon seems lovely -- easy to talk to, friendly, and funny. It's such a nice treat to go to Changes, and I'm sure my future appointments will be just as great. I booked an appointment here after a friend got a great haircut and I needed a last minute highlight while I was in town. I had my appointment with Courtney who was very friendly and an expert on creating the ultimate honey color for summer and toning/glazing my existing color so it all became uniform. The one thing I cannot stand about getting highlights done is how long foiling takes. It's kinda one of those unavoidable things, however, Courtney seemed to foil my head (we did 3/4 too) in record time. My color is rich, shiny and blends with my previous color and natural color ridiculously well. I was very pleased with the cut I got too; a combination of cleaning up the ends and adding in some layers around my face. I would gladly book another appointment here. I was referred to Kurt by a friend. I was hesitant how the visit would go as I have short hair and my friend has long hair. When I arrived, I was greeted by Cole; she was friendly and chatty. But not the annoying chatty, just the right amount of friendly. Kurt walked over with a smile and greeted me with a friendly hello. We sat down and chatted about my lifestyle and what kind of hair maintenance I was looking for. We established my likes and dislikes about my hair; Kurt gave his suggestions, but he had listened to what I said, so his suggestions were based on my earlier comments. I am very much a visual person when it comes to my hair and quite particular. I probably verge on crazy when it comes to my hair. I own that crazy with ease :) Anyhow, after looking at a few photos online, we agreed to a cut and I left the color in his hands based on our conversation. As he did my color we just chatted, I found Kurt very easy to talk with and we had some good laughs. The salon was laid back, but current with the cuts/colors walking out the door. All the staff was friendly and their respective clients seem to be returning clients. This is a great indication of a great salon when people come back!! The color is done and we start on the cut. I have a short pixie like cut and my hair is thin. I am always a bit hesitant when trying someone new only because if you screw up my hair, I WILL know. No lie, it was THE best haircut and color I have had in a very long time! The two tone colors we discussed were seamless. You couldn't tell where the light ended and the dark began (no choppiness) is where I'm going with that. The cut was cute/edgy, but not boyish. Yes, I have a pixie, but not everyone can do short cuts without making a woman look butch. I have no problem if butch is your thing, but not mine. I left feeling terrific and when I stopped in at Urban Outfitters before leaving town, I had someone compliment me on my cut/color! I've since seen Kurt a few more times and will continue to see him. I'm soo glad I took the chance. He now has a re-occurring customer! In addition to me, my Mother In Law and Niece now go to him, as well. Anyhow, go see Kurt Sarver if you want an awesome cut and color!!! PS. Price was reasonable, parking was easy, I love being able to walk around town after I was done, and there are lots of great food places to check out afterwards, as well. Staff was friendly and salon has always been quite clean. PPS. I just want to mention that I drive from Worcester every 6 weeks to see Kurt. Really unsatisfied. I came in for a color consultation for about 10 minutes all in which they cut off 3 long strands of hair to experiment on before dying my whole head. They said they would call me later that day to see what they could do..and didnt call till the next day. They couldnt get the color I wanted so I asked them to send me a picture of the color they had so I didnt have to drive up to just leave again. She didnt send the picture..I had to call back to hear her say the picture wasnt true to color. She could of atleast called me back and told me? SO unhappy. read more

I walked into Changes Salon disheveled after a red eye flight from California and I walked out l with a fresh new look for the conference I'll be attending. Courtney was knowledgeable and patient and took time to really understand what I wanted before she skillfully started snipping. Great service. Clean, pleasant environment. Excellent price. The only thing that would make me happier is if I could get regular haircuts from Courtney without traveling all the way back to MA. I called Changes on a whim to have my hair done for a my wedding later in the summer, and they booked me with Kurt. He helped me think through what I was envisioning, and did a fantastic job with keeping my curly hair curly- but 'tamed'- for the wedding. The trial was a great success! When I went back for my real wedding hair styling, he listened to what I had said regarding my feedback from the trial, and did it even better the second time. It stayed put all night, people kept asking where I'd gotten it done, and it perfectly the captured the 'farm-like' quality of our wedding. An extra bonus- he never once suggested I blow it out straight, and he was so excellent in keeping me company rather than feel awkward, which sometimes happens with conversations you have while getting your hair cut. He even included my mom in the conversation, making her feel welcomed, rather than just hovering. read more

UPDATE: Edward called to see if I was happy with my highlights, and when I told him I was dissatisfied with the cut, he said they would fix it for free! I went in and the other owner Stephen saw me. He asked me what my vision for my hair was, and i felt like he really cared. He was really nice and easy to talk to. He did a fantastic job correcting the errors that the last stylist made. He made me feel very comfortable with his professionalism and friendliness. I'm confident that I can trust him with my hair and for that reason I will go back to him again because once you find somebody who really KNOWS what to do with your hair you must hold on to that person for dear life. So, in conclusion, I will be seeing Stephen at Changes from now on, for as long as I can afford it. (Oh, and also, the girl who butchered my hair as outlined in the initial report below was there when I went to get it fixed, and she did a really good job on the client she was working with, so... I dunno maybe she was having an off day when she cut my hair? Or maybe my hair is so exquisitely complex that only a Level 4a stylist is qualified to touch it?) INITIAL RESPONSE: Next time, I'm going to Glamourama. I feel crushed. I made an appointment to get highlights last week with one of the new talent, and I had scheduled a trim with Edward for the following week; his reviews assured me that I could trust him with my hair. After the stylist finished the highlights, she offered to cut it so I said why not since I was already in the chair and I figured it's hard to mess up a trim. Big mistake. The end result looks almost exactly like Hannah's hair in the season finale of Girls. Every time I look in the mirror I want to cringe. I won't be going out without wearing a hat for the next three weeks at least. She hacked off a whole bunch on one side. I told her I was growing it long and she cut it shorter than the last stylist did (another source of my regret - the woman who cut it in California did such a good job, and now the last vestiges of her good work are destroyed.) I'm embarrassed, mortified - at least I've gotten past the point where I burst into tears every time I look in the mirror. Mostly. I've given myself better haircuts. Also, the highlights didn't even show up. She told me they would brighten up in a few days and if they didn't I should come back but there's no way I'm ever letting her touch my hair again. I mean, she seemed like a pretty nice girl and she gave me a good head rub when she washed my hair but I guess she was just really inexperienced and you get what you pay for I suppose. Well, there's $100 down the drain. I could cry. I was so looking forward to my cute new summer cut and highlights but there you go! I called in the morning for an appt. and got one on the same day. Prices were very reasonable, especially for NoHo, and included shampoo, cut, and blowdry. The place was clean, well-lit, and everyone was friendly. Changes did not seem amazing or special, but it was overall a solid experience. Got a great, simple, haircut by Ashley who was lovely. Very kind and open, but not too talky (I think it can be really grating to get a super chatty hairstylist). I will be back for more haircuts and some hair removal... I visited changes salon with a prior haircut that desperately needed work; my layers were uneven and I really needed some color. Edward was the stylist and he worked magic! He gave me a beautifully cut bob with bangs and my blue black hair color was rich and vibrant. Edward is also a great conversationalist and has a lot of knowledge about a variety of topics so it was a pleasure speaking with him. The haircut and color were a little pricey. However, I believe for the caliber and quality of the haircut and color, the price is very reasonable. I would say the final product is satisfactory. I went in wanting a shorter cut--about shoulder length--and an ombre effect. It's not exactly what I expected it to be, but like their website says..."even with the best intentions, a new look, color or style may not be what you expected..."so I'm not too upset about that. Yet, their website also touts that they..."communicate expectations to all of our clients first..." which I felt was not the case during my session. I conducted research on the different salons in and around Northampton before finally committing to Changes. I set up a consultation and was led to believe that they would be able to re-create the look I wanted. By the time I was 'done' my stylist told me that there was some color left at the tips--from previous coloring work--that the bleach didn't strip completely, but I didn't think it was going to be noticeable. Again, that was not the case. The next day one of my girlfriends pointed out the color issue--which is not something you want when you pay $100+ for a hair cut and coloring--so I decided to set up another meeting time at Changes to try and see if something can be done. At first they were very accommodating and were able to meet with me that exact same day--brownie points for that--but it was a different story once I actually showed up for my appointment. Right off the bat, the stylist attempted to pass off my issue by saying, "I don't see the color issue, it doesn't seem like there's anything there, etc..." when they explicitly said that there was some color left the other day. I told the stylist that I wanted to get rid of the residual color that the bleach didn't take off and asked about re-bleaching and/or cutting off the residual color and bringing up the bleach some more--since if I were to cut a couple inches off then the ombre effect would be affected. Instead of being given options, I was told that re-bleaching would do nothing if the color didn't come off the first round of bleaching. Moreover, if I wanted to cut off a few inches and bring up the bleaching they would have to charge me an additional ombre priced job, which is roughly $100+. This totally contradicts what their website advertises..."If you're not 100% satisfied, we will happily change the service at no cost." Not only was I given few and limiting options, but during my questioning the stylist brought over another stylist to consult with. However, I felt ignored and overlooked because the two stylists basically talked over my head about what to do and didn't acknowledge my wants and questions. Overall, I am content with the cut and color; however, I am extremely put off by my experience. I did not feel like a valued customer and instead felt like I was an nuisance that they wanted to get rid of as quickly as possible--especially since the stylist did not even attempt to engage in polite conversation with me and sat in silence for about 80% of the time. Although their website again touts that they will..."treat you as a guest, not as a number. Our clients are the only reason we're in business. We know this and we'll always try to treat you like a star..." I was extremely disappointed by the service. Granted I know that each individuals' hair history and experiences are different, but I definitely feel like I could have been treated better "as a guest," especially with the amount I paid. read more

I went in with a photo of exactly what I wanted and she still managed to do something totally different. If you are looking for a cut that is in the least bit funky, DO NOT shop here. Not happy. I came here because I badly needed a cut, my stylist was away for awhile, and this place had an opening that same evening. I picked this place essentially thru Yelp. Big mistake. The girl who cut my hair was super young and told me it was her first job cutting hair. I could tell. No nice massage during the wash and I was given a poor cut, especially cleaning up the back. The stylist was also a poor conversationalist - "Um, do you work? Many of my clients are rich and don't work.' Right. Enjoy those clients. You had a chance at a new one. Ashley did an amazing job on my hair color!! I moved recently from California where I had the same hair colorist for the past 10 years who perfected the shade of blonde I like. After months of growing out my natural color, I decided to try Ashley at Changes Salon. I am so lucky I found her here in town!! She listened to what I wanted, even spoke with my hair colorist in California (per my somewhat neurotic request) and did a stunning job on the cut and more importantly (to me) - the color!! If you want your hair colored by an expert then go to Changes and see Rosa. I botched my hair with a take home hair color kit (huge mistake I know) and needed it fixed asap. I have been to many salons, but Changes is far superior in this area. What I was the most impressed with was the care and time Rosa took with me in the consulation alone. We discussed different options for at least a half hour before deciding on a course of action. She really cared about me being happy with the results and getting what I wanted. She is excellent at what she does and it is clearly her passion. As a bonus, the prices are extremely reasonable and I paid roughly half of what I have paid for some other salons that did not give me a fraction of the care and time that Rosa did. There are 2 types of people that are hard to find: a good doctor and mechanic. Then there's the hairstylist..the elusive #3. Lucky for me, I walked in on a Saturday afternoon and got Elysa as my hair stylist. I told her I was bored of my long hair, and wanted a change (pun intended). We agreed on shoulder length hair with layers. When she finished, I liked it. Then she asked, "Is there anything you would want to change?" Her sincerity in that question was completely genuine. Often times stylists finish the cut, stand back and beam "what do you think?!?" As they marvel in their masterpiece, you're wondering if you can pull off a shower cap for 3 months...I never give them my honest opinion because a) Don't think they really want to hear it and b) Don't want to hurt their feelings. But, Elysa was sincerely asking, so I answered honestly. I told her I liked the cut, but there was something missing from the front. As I stumbled through my thoughts, she nodded her head, made a couple of teeny changes, and BOOM. Night and day. I went from liking my hair cut to realllyyy liking it. The next day, I couldn't stop running my hand through the hair just to discover new ways for the layers to fall. It looked great no matter what I did. Where to begin? How about three years ago. I was a junior at Smith and I wanted to cut my hair (NOT the "Smith Chop" - just to switch up my long heavy locks for a more polished look), but was very afraid. Like many young ladies, I am protective of my hair. I'm not sure how I decided on Changes. I feel like I googled "hair salon Northampton MA" and selected based on website or something, then looked at reviews - pretty random. It wasn't a referral, that's for sure. Anyway, when I called, I said I wanted to make an appointment for a haircut... "and I'm going to get like 5 inches cut off, so could you schedule someone to hold my hand too?" Not only did the receptionist laugh at my joke (worth one star right there), she actually did make a note that I was coming in for a legit cut and not just a touch-up. She and my stylist had already communicated about the fact that I was new to the salon and cutting off a fair amount of hair (I feel like they do this before most appointments, which is important to me). Now for my stylist. I had no preference, and said I was open to whomever, and the receptionist set me up with Rosa. Before we even went to the shampoo station, Rosa sat me down in the chair and took my hair out of its bun and we talked for a solid fifteen minutes about what I wanted. I was confused. No one had ever done this for me before. Then we proceeded as usual; shampoo, conditioner, et cetera. We chit-chatted and talked throughout the cut and blowdry, and she gave me tons of styling tips for my new shoulder-length style after I told her it had never been this shaped, and not so short since childhood (I have coarse, curly, extremely voluminous hair that I had usually kept long with some layers just toward the bottom because I was too afraid to try anything else). My style was perfect. The blowout was flawless. I was hooked. I graduated a year and a half ago (2011) and now live about 2 hours away, and I won't let anyone else touch my hair. I get it cut every 3-4 months and am now in a phase where I'm letting it grow out again. Rosa is extremely helpful and supportive every time I talk about a new style, and crafts exactly what I want without much help or direction from me. We've become very friendly over the past few years (although I wager most people think their stylist is friendly toward them - but Rosa really is!) and she is just generally a great person. She is extremely honest, too. About a year and a half ago I was considering getting some highlights or something (my hair has never been treated in any way and is a medium-dark brown), and I asked her opinion since I know she color treats all the time and loves it: "what color highlights or lowlights do you think might look good?" She told me flatly that she would advise against me messing with my color. She said my hair was beautiful as it is and didn't need color enhancement. That's integrity, if you ask me. Rosa is also SO open to teaching. I'm always working on blowing out my hair, but there's so much of it and I find it really hard to do. Instead of just observing, I finally asked her for help last time I got a cut, and she walked me through each step, telling me what was important and what wasn't - bristles on the brush, product, hair dryer strength, and so on. So helpful. She creates great cuts for me that grow out well, and is invested in my hair, recommending different products (not products that the salon has - just general products) and so on. Beautifying people is her passion, and it shows. She is the best. I've never had an experience with anyone else at Changes, but in college I dragged my friend there to get a haircut after someone in NYC, her home, had butchered her fine, curly hair. I made us appointments at the same time, and my friend adored her stylist too, and came out looking and feeling 100% better. She then made her older sister, also a New Yorker, an appointment for her next trip up to Northampton, and her sister proceeded to have an appointment every time she came up after that. Prices are fantastic. I challenge anyone to find such quality at a price that rivals those of Changes. Customer service is great - they offer me tea and coffee every time and are extremely friendly. Tipping is not available via credit card, and I forget this often, so I dash across the street to Bank of America adjacent to Thornes and grab some cash for Rosa. Bottom line: best salon ever. changes salon has the worst customer service in the world. the manager steven yelled at me during the entire meeting. i went in to help my friend and he asked me to leave so that he could scold my friend. the dye job was incomplete and a $170 fee was charged. asked for one thing received another charged $170 for highlights!!! i can't believe how rude he was it was ridiculous he tried to intimidate me and when complained steven says oh give me a break i don't care i have been hearing about this situation all day! i will be reporting the business to the cosmetologists department of licensing and regulation, bbb and the federal trade commission! absolute ridiculousness i wouldn't recommend this salon if it was the last one in the world. for great and pleasurable service i recommend the ulta salons or salon 241! stay away from changes rude customer service!!! the owner of changes responded to my review and disclosed client information on a public reviewing website. this is pretty odd for a business that claims to be professional and loved by the community which is actually wrong because the town of northampton does this thing where you state your favorite business in categories and not one vote i saw was for changes salon. the owner stephen called the grandmother repeatedly. also speaking about professionalism and boundaries with customers the owner admitted that he stalked my friend on facebook prior to the consultation which is weird and unacceptable for a "professional" establishment. also just a pointer stephen if your establishment was so well loved you would not need to fish review sites to defend your establishment and it's reputation. again folks save yourself the trouble and stay away from changes if you believe in fair quotes. read more

My bridal party and I had our hair done at Changes Salon this August. When I called to make the appointments they were really accommodating and friendly with scheduling all of us. All four of us left with our hair looking fantastic! Courtney and Lauren both did an amazing job! They were both really friendly and made us all look and feel great! I've gotten my hair cut at changes 3 times since moving to the area and I have never been happier with my hair. Lauren is fun to talk to and seems to really know her stuff. The second time I wanted a big change and she helped me figure out a completely new style which I get complimented on constantly and that I am now in love with. I think each time I've gone, I've paid about $35 which is less than half of what I'm used to. read more

Sarrah is an excellent stylist. Not only are the color and cut great, but she also has waxed my brows and lip expertly. I feel as though she really listens to me when we discuss what I like and don't like. And she remembers details of my life so we always seem to have stuff to chat about. I LOVE THIS PLACE! This is definitely a staple place for me to go to when getting a haircut, even though I've only been going here for a year and half or so. I've never got my hair colored here yet, which I'm planning on it during next summer or so. Each visit I've had, the results were amazing and the stylist, Sarah(she's awesome and I totally recommend her) listens to every little bit of information and what you specifically want, she's able to preforms. I generally get a trim of 1-3 inches depending how much my hair has grown in 3 months of in between haircuts. I generally always gets a short, one length a-line haircut, and I always get the same performance from her, unless I decide to get to change it a bit for preference. I told her that I didn't want it be an extreme a-line haircut, but I wanted it more subtle.Despite her being a level 1(Based on how much I pay for the haircut), she does a fantastic job. I also love how they offer olapex, but I'm really sad that they don't offer perms. I moved further away from where I lived before, but it's totally worth the almost 2 hr drive! Would recommend them any time!! read more
