Very disappointing recent visit. The pizzas were burnt on the bottom and undercooked on the inside. We agreed that the lettuce-covered enchiladas weren't good, but the steak was. The sauteed mushrooms were also good. The service was at least as disappointing. They took our beer orders, but never served them. The restaurant was not super busy at the time, so there's no excuse. [Original 5-star review] One of two restaurants in Chama that I consider really good (the other is Outlaw BBQ). On our most recent visit, we had 3 pizzas: buffalo chicken (a special not on the regular menu), Yard Bird, and pepperoni. All were really good; the buffalo chicken was my favorite. I advise ordering, up front, everything you plan to drink. Having finished a great milk stout beer, and there being no sign of our food, I went back to get another and was firmly told to go to the end of the (food ordering) line. Great spot in town! Keep in mind this is a counter service. For food, we enjoyed the pizza. Their service was attentive and friendly and we loved the ambiance on their outdoor deck. Here's another restaurant review brought to you by a visit to Chama (2019). (We're going back for sure at some point!) If you've never been to Chama it's pretty quaint, and almost feels like you're on a movie set. I think the Main Street is all of three city blocks, but... it's full of activity (being a ski resort!)... and history (we rode a coal-engine train!) Feeling cold and hungry we stumbled upon this gem... don't let the exterior fool you. It used to be a drug store then it was converted into a restaurant called LOCAL which serves farm-to-table, local organic dishes. We stopped in after our train ride and based on previous reviews we were hungry and pumped to eat here. I was happy to see they have a great ambiance with good music, but that's really not why we stopped in. The service was slow, rude, and they acted as though they didn't want us there. Both restrooms were out of order. An automatic "service charge" of %15 was added to the exorbitant price. The buns and meat on the burgers were both dry. The pizza was cooked at the wrong temp. You order your food and drinks at the bar and they bring the food out to you. No tabs, pay as you go. They do check on you to make sure everything is ok. Water and glasses are already on the table when you seat yourself. Cloth napkins and nice silverware in a tray are given to you when you place your order at the bar. We stopped in for dinner while on a camping trip with the family. Since it was the off season for this tourist town, most of the restaurants were closed. I'm so glad we stumbled upon this place. Everyone in my group found something they liked on the menu (which is rare) and they have a great, pet friendly, patio! The restaurant itself was nice and clean. The food was awful and so was the service. We ordered a pepperoni pizza and a pepperoni and bacon calzone. The kid that brought our food brought us the wrong calzone and said "well this is what you're getting". Then comes back and slams our pizza down. The calzone had a handful of pepperoni, no cheese. Welcoming staff, great decor and pretty darn good pizza. Did I mention that the oven is as big as a Volkswagen bug? It's all good stuff. A little pricey for a 14" pizza (plus 2 cans of Coke) for around $20. There's not too much happening on the food scene in Chama, so this is a really interesting addition. This place will never change no matter who they bring in. You need real Chefs with real wood fire experience. I was back there in 2022 and there were 2 Chefs then that were great but they quit. We were in Chama for the train ride looking for a place to eat .. There are few options .We chose Chama Local .They charge a 15% non negotiable gratuity on top of the price along with a 6% " Chama Tax" which I was too tired to argue about but it was the only local food tax I encountered while traveling through NM. WE HAD A PIZZA and a Caesar salad . Maybe making a pizza in northern NM is challenging I don't know but sauce and cheese were bland. We were in Chama last Summer. Enjoyed the beautiful train ride. However our food experience was awful. Why? Hardly anything open!! We had motel and we were to go out the next morning. We figured that evening we'd grab a bite to eat in Chama and see where we may get some breakfast before our train ride. The only 2 places open was a GRILL and a Subway. We went to the Grill and ordered fish and chips (only had take out). Before we headed to the motel, we spotted a market and went in there. We ended up buying some milk, orange juice, kids sized boxes of cold cereal. Coffee maker was in motel room. My husband lined a waste basket with plastic and ice and kept the milk and Orange juice cold all night. We had a little table in the room and ate our fish and chips. Terrible...so much grease!! Next morning..ate the cereal using cardboard coffee cups from room..had the milk and orange juice. The the Problem Began. The greasy partially eaten "dinner" the night before and I did not agree. I thought we were going to have to cancel the train ride. After many many trip to the bathroom I finally felt sort of ok to go. Never ever again would I count on any food in Chama! we were told all the college kids went back to school and there was no one to work in the cafes. Unbelievable. (They also pay staff a living wage) play cornhole in the courtyard, sit around the fire pit, and enjoy the nice selection of beer and wine! We were visiting from ABQ to ride the train this weekend and stopped in for dinner tonight. Everything we had was very good! From the smoked wings to the salad to the pizza, we loved it all. I would highly recommend the wings. No breading. Just sauce and some kind of aoiloi. The pizzas were made in the wood fired oven. Perfect. We got the Macho and The Request, and loved them both. This place is an absolute gem! The staff are all extremely friendly and you can tell they are happy. (Paid a livable wage) The pizza was incredible and the atmosphere while very relaxed sets the bar for Chama restaurants. She took care of it and my Tuscan chicken dish was delicious. Staffing issues - I know it's a thing. No need to make a bigger deal of it. Nice casual place, self serve but at premium+ prices. Sign claims "no tipping" but they automatically add 15% gratuity to the bill so it's really compulsory tipping. Their claim is this ""allows them to pay a living wage". That's fine, if you are truly paying a living wage. If you are just pooling the compulsory tip you're misrepresenting your actions and shorting your staff during slow times and off-season. If it's the former, just reflect it in your pricing rather than hide it in a compulsory tip. Staff is mostly nice except the guy making the pizza who was dismissive and rude when I asked after 45 minutes how much longer for our pizza. There is no table service just food delivery and table busing, so no server to ask. Food was pretty good, greens seemed pretty fresh but had some wilt, antipasto had good variety with assorted nuts, really good dried fruits and a couple of cheeses but the meats were bland and tasteless. Pizza very good. Food coming out of the kitchen was very slow and came out piecemeal over the course of an hour or so leaving us to watch each other eat alone. Overall an ok experience for casual dining but prices are very high for the quality of food and level of service offered especially given the slow and disorganized kitchen. read more

Ah we love love loved this place! You'll get great, honest advice as you place your order at the register. We took that advice and split a Greek Goddess salad (yummmmm!) and Wildfire pizza (no need to fear!) for the two of us, and the portions were perfect.
