Worst service ever! I had to walk in the kitchen to get someone to serve us. Finally when we got our drinks, the bartender or whoever he was stood right there while we signed the bill, then waited there to see if we tipped him. I'm not a bartender or a waiter but etiquette should be applied. After we were seated, the waiter was okay serving us and brought the food in a okay manner, but not one time were we asked if we wanted drinks or if everything was okay. The food was standard, basic, and edible. I was very disappointed. I use to go here back in the day and loved it, but now it seems like a dive bar with no attention to the customers. It's a shame. We received excellent service, food was great, and our server had a lot of patience with us and our speaker person. We sat at a table in the bar area, and while the food was delicious (we had the scampi and the set-up), it seemed like the only way to get service from our waiter is to be a regular here; otherwise, you're pretty much ignored and get the bare minimum. After dinner, we decided to sit at the bar and have a drink or two. The bartender was friendly, knowledgeable about the selection, and his drinks were delicious. It was sad to see how the bartender was being talked to and bullied by other staff in Spanish, it seemed like he didn't fully understand what they were saying, but I understood everything they were saying to him and about him. When I asked if that's how they always talk to him, he just shrugged and said, "You get used to it." Hopefully, the new owners can talk to the manager and let them know that's not how you treat staff and, especially in front of customers. read more

This was my first time having Basque food and Chalet did NOT disappoint! Manny, our server, was great! The service was fantastic! I had Orange roughy with the garlic lemon sauce. I didn't expect the sauce to be creamy but I was pleasantly surprised. I wish it had been warmer temperature wise. The entire set up was so good! For dessert I had the chocolate mousse. Hadn't been here in several years and as Noriagas was closed we thought we would give it a try. I had the ox tail stew and it was good but nothing "special ". The offerings were less than what we are accustomed to with no tongue or spaghetti and I really didn't care for the flavor of the salad dressing. Crown and 7 was weak with a lot of 7 flavor. Spent an early evening here at Chalet today. It was like coming home to visit family. We have been at this location before the remodel, and we were amazed at how much everything had improved! It is a basque location, very much old-time style; but it was bright, airy, and the feel was very much like visiting my grandmother's house for the holidays. The food was excellent: we had the full spread with a very good soup, delicious salad, and some very tasty sides of mushrooms and the classic pickled tongue, then entrees of the salmon and classic basque chicken. We were in heaven. Our server George was extremely attentive during our meal, recommending items we might be interested in and making sure we had a great time. Before moving to Bakersfield, one of the few things people knew about the town was that it was known for it's Basque population and Basque food. I was very excited to try the food since I hadn't had any of the cuisine before. I searched other reviews on Yelp before landing on Chalet Basque. Despite it having lower ratings, it was open at the time we were looking to eat. The restaurant was extremely understaffed. There was only one server/waiter and he was also the bartender. They were gearing up for a graduation party that day so the service didn't seem to prioritize the regular diners. We waited like 20 minutes in the reception area trying to figure out who worked there and who we would talk to. We ended up calling the restaurant to talk to someone and we were finally acknowledged. Once we were seated we looked over the menu and were excited to finally order. I ordered the beef bourguignon but they were out so I ordered the breaded veal chalet style (with cheese, mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers). We also ordered some wine. Considering this visit was in June 2021, during the Covid pandemic, I was very shocked when my wine was served in a lipstick stained glass. It was a sign that they were not paying attention to the details. The service was slow as there was only one gentleman running the whole dining area and serving drinks. Once the food finally came out, we were hungry and ready to eat. My dish looked hastily served and a little sloppy but smelled good. The veal had great flavor, but it was too salty for my liking. The portion was huge. I was able to take half of it to go for later. I enjoyed the dish despite the saltiness, but I won't be back. It's a real shame because it seems like the Basque community in Bakersfield is no longer thriving and some of this culture and history will be lost in the coming years. My friend and I were driving from San Diego (where I live) to Bakersfield (where I grew up) on the Sunday evening after Thanksgiving, with the goal of getting to Chalet Basque before it closed. I called on the way there and Manny answered, saying they would seat until around 8:30. When we arrived at 8:40 he was very friendly and said he'd been waiting for us since we called! My last time at Chalet Basque before this visit was probably in 2002, and nothing has changed. Excellent food and service. Among the dinner sides included in the fixed price, the cabbage soup, marinated tomatoes, and french fries were my favorites. I got the shrimp scampi entree (suggested by Manny) and it was garlicy, creamy and delicious. Manny was our server throughout the meal, and he was gracious and attentive the whole time. Disappointing and frustrating... my family and I enjoy the basque cuisine and style. That being said we stop in Bakersfield for dinner every time we travel through. We usually dine at another location but decided to try something new after viewing their website. Cutting right to the chase; their advertised specials were non existent, instead we were offered one of their "other" specials. We ordered a T-bone steak, halibut, and lamb chops. We were served cabbage soup and a small salad prior to our entrees ( no hors d'oeuvres as stated in the website). Our entrees came and 2 of the three, fish and T-bone, were seriously overcooked. The fish was so dry it was inedible, and the T-bone that was ordered medium rare came well done. Both were sent back and the second round also arrived overcooked. The kicker was when the bill arrived and every item was more expensive than the menu or quoted special price. When I asked about it the waiter said he had quoted the old prices and would not make an adjustment. If you want a true basque meal I would recommend avoiding this particular restaurant. read more

Warning: We went here recently and had an experience that was a little sketchy. I was with a group of about 12 people with about 4 separate checks. When our bill arrived, mine was the only check that had an itemized bill. I noticed that the gratuity was added on to the bill. In addition, my credit card receipt had an option to add the tip, which was already added. I advised my friends that were dining with me and as it turned out, none of them had the itemized bill that showed they had already tipped. They had written in an extra tip on their card.
