I recently purchased a Salsa Cutthroat from Chain line Cycle, I was in Bicycle Retail for years. I am very fussy when it comes to service before and after the purchase. At one point Darrin (the owner) felt that I was not sure the Cutty was the right size for me. He went out of his way to make sure that I was 110% satisfied with my purchase. Since then I have recommended CLC to friends who have purchased bikes and been very happy with the service and staff. Darrin is an expert wheel builder, I think it is a passion for him. Darrin build up a set of wheels for my bike that I am very impressed with. CLC built up a Salsa Fargo from scratch for my wife and she loves it more then life itself. I got a great discount, and the owner gave me and my son advice on the best bike to buy based on his height, weight and my income. The bikes are of great quality, and one of the best brands. He appears quite knowledgeable about the products and the competition around him. Somehow, he seems sincere and honest in what he does. I have spoken to him about ordering my own bike for this month. Great store, great service, great mechanics! Our bikes have never worked so well as when we take them to chainline for a tune up. We have a range of bikes in our home child's bikes, commuter bikes and mountain bikes, most bought and serviced at Chainline. I appreciate that they respect all riders and all types of riding - they seem to be more interested in everyone riding than just servicing the racing set. It is refreshing to go into a bike store that embraces all riders. AND they are extremely generous they donated a great bike to our school and now there is one more happy cyclist in the world! Deal with them at your peril. I bought a titanium framed bike with full Shimano Ultegra at just under $4500. I should have seen the early warning signs and run as it just kept getting worse in increasingly ridiculous ways. It started with putting a deposit on the bike. The owner told me my card wouldn't work. First thing I said was, 'we should check the numbers'. He kept saying, 'I tried it again and it says declined, please advise'. That indicates he just kept using the same numbers he wrote down over the phone. He could have written them down wrong and I could have read them wrong to him. Eventually I had to use another card which meant the purchase was no longer fully insured nor would I get the points. He never bothered to double check numbers like I kept asking. The balance of payment I made in person on the original card I wanted to use without problems. I then expressed reservation about the carbon fibre parts the bike normally came with. In the end I checked into the parts and sent an email confirming I would take them. I began the email with 'I'm still not sure I'm that carbon wienie guy' and continued with 'BUT I've checked into them and they look like most of what I want so just keep it easy and I'll take those parts'. In that email I asked a couple of other questions about fit and size of parts that I never heard back on. I was on a timeline to order the bike quickly so I could pick it up down there which is why decided to just take the parts it was originally spec'd with. Apparently he just read the first line and never read the rest of the email. $4500 for a bike and this guy can only bother to read the first 10 or so words of an email! He kept emailing back about different options which I took to mean some parts weren't available which had been the case with tires and some other bits. Finally confirm the order for the bike with alloy parts which is fine other than I had started to warm to the carbon and I wanted the pricing adjusted to fairly reflect the cheaper parts. Of course at this point the bike is ordered too late to be there for me to pick it up when in town after a 7hour drive. It arrived 1-2 days later. Now it has to be shipped and he quotes $140 to ship even though I call and was quoted $60 by greyhound. Turns out to be about $100 and I find most of the extra money is just outrageously expensive insurance that only covers the first $1000 of a $4500 bike and would have been covered had the original credit card been used. I was never asked about insurance. I finally get the bike and eventually go for one short little ride to just try it. The chainring 'travels' a bit and that's odd, also some shifting issues. I go for a second ride and get about 5 kms and the whole pedal arm 'crank' falls off the bottom bracket flopping around still attached to my foot. I cannot get the thing back on in any functional way as not enough of the splines can be inserted to hold and a small plastic tab designed to indicate proper position and 'lock' it cannot be placed properly. A monkey could see the obvious problem. Ironically the 'chainline' which the shop is named for measures no where near manufacturer's specs. I discover two dust caps left in place that are normally not used for road bikes. They use up too much of the length of the axle for the pedal arms to properly mount. I remove those and it is now much better but not perfect by any means although the chainline is now near spec. I ride it a bit more on other days since the point of spending this much on a bike is to ride it and one is very keen to ride a new purchase. I take the bike into a local bike shop and they take it apart again. They find the 'pressfit' bottom bracket has not been properly installed and seated right and remains a little askew. They press it in and things are much better. However now the bottom bracket is shot after no more than 1000kms from it's time of being ridden improperly installed. I have a new one on order which will mean another $100 just to get the bike I initially paid good money for already. Through all of this the owner just once after confirmation of the improper bottom bracket installation said 'sorry'. Up till then he just made excuses for everything or tried to blame me. Good luck to anyone foolhardy enough to shop here. This guy also has his own carbon frames built. With his communication skills and inattention to detail I can't imagine how offshore manufacturing works out. Update; After about a year of riding and never really being satisfied with the fit of the bottom bracket and cranks (pedal arms) I finally found the problem. At the time pressfit bottom brackets were fairly new and to use shimano components an adapter must be used. These adapters are very specifically shaped for each bottom bracket and crankset. My bike was supplied with the wrong adapters. I contact manufacturer direct but he was about as helpful. I order the proper part direct and voila it finally fits as it should of day1 read more

i brought my bike in with a problem with the rear shock. after telling me that they are able to fix the problem they took my bike in and said it would be fixed. at the end of the week i called to see what the progress was and was told that they have not ordered the parts needed yet. after another week of waiting they finally said that it was done and could be picked up. after arriving to get my bike i was told that they were unable to fix the problem of my back shock even after making me wait for 2 weeks. on top of that they managed to spill some fluids on my back shock that ruined the decal, turning it white instead of black forcing me to remove it and spend the $40 to order a new one. on top of ALL this the back break is now insanely squeaky and soft. the amount of unprofessionalism and unpreparedness was insane. i expected far more then i should of from this shop and they managed to cause far more harm then good. read more
